Will SDL ever learn the difference between letters and words? (from About Translation blog)

Will SDL ever learn the difference between letters and words? (from About Translation blog) | Translator Tools | Scoop.it

I have been using translation memory tools for about twenty years now. More and more, I’ve come to the conclusion that their most useful feature is not the ability to offer fuzzy and perfect matches (useful as they may be), but rather the concordance search, which can suggest previous translations from segments that are not similar enough to the one you are working on to qualify for a fuzzy match.
And this is why I get so annoyed with SDL: they think that if the memory does not contain the word you are looking for, it is useful to show you words that sort of look like it...

Stanislav Okhvat's insight:

In all fairness, this fuzziness feature should be more effective when one searches for long phrases, but I totally agree with the author -- it's almost useless for single words in most languages.

Wordfast Anywhere is the first CAT tool that implements this new API. Using Google Web Speech is free, it requires no training or expensive microphone and it works with about 40 languages, far more than speech recognition solutions like Dragon Professional Individual or Windows Speech Recognition. Made for the 7th ABRATES Conference in Rio in June 2016, this video shows how to translate a short text in Brazilian Portuguese into French, by dictating in Wordfast Anywhere using Google Web Speech.

How to simply switch target and source roles in Trados Studio instead of converting PO files (from SuperText AG's blog)

How to simply switch target and source roles in Trados Studio instead of converting PO files (from SuperText AG's blog) | Translator Tools | Scoop.it

Tired of converting PO files? Annoyed with deleting the content of the target segments before entering your translation? Want to use the target text of a PO file as source text in Trados Studio? Try out our PO file type definition for Trados Studio! It could come in really handy.

Stanislav Okhvat's insight:
SuperText AG presents a special file type definition for importing PO files into SDL Trados Studio. Unlike the built-in file type that exists in Studio, this one offers a very useful option: you can use the target text (msgstr attribute) of the PO file as the source text during translation, and the translated PO file will still contain the original source text (msgid attribute).
