Translation Tribulations: memoQ: stopwords for term extraction (by Kevin Lossner)

Translation Tribulations: memoQ: stopwords for term extraction (by Kevin Lossner) | Translator Tools | Scoop.it

One of the major weaknesses (aside from never remembering my changes to the options or my preferred settings for extractions) is the management of stopword lists.

Overall, Kilgray's approach to stopwords is reasonably sophisticated; some time ago I published a rather incomprehensible post in which I demonstrated how the "stopword codes" control whether a word can appear at the start, the end or the middle of a phrase even if it is excluded as a single word. These codes are quite useful in some cases. However, they also complicate the use of stopword data for most users.

Stanislav Okhvat's insight:

Kevin Lossner explains the intricacies of managing stopword lists for optimizing terminology extraction in memoQ.

Yanks versus Brits... linguistically speaking! Setting up forbidden terms in Trados Studio (by Paul Filkin) | Translator Tools | Scoop.it

The concept of forbidden terms has been discussed quite a bit over the last few days in TW_Users, so I thought it might be a good idea to take some of the ideas some users shared with me around what would be useful to know when working with MultiTerm and tie it into the concept of Forbidden Terms.

Stanislav Okhvat's insight:

Paul Filkin explains (and shows in a video) how to set up a Multiterm termbase which could be used to detect forbidden terms during the QA step of the translation process.

How to batch convert .doc files to .docx (by Emma Goldsmith)

How to batch convert .doc files to .docx (by Emma Goldsmith) | Translator Tools | Scoop.it

There are a couple of good reasons for converting .doc files to .docx before translating them in Trados Studio. I’ll explain why later. If you’ve got just one file to convert, it’s simple to open it in Word and save it as .docx. But how can you batch convert a group of files all at the same time?

Stanislav Okhvat's insight:

Emma Goldsmith explains why it is worthwhile to convert DOC files to DOCX format before translating in SDL Trados Studio (and, actually, many other CAT tools), and provides a time-saving macro that can be used to batch-convert DOC files to DOCX format.

How to search a MultiTerm termbase within Trados Studio (by Jayne Fox)

How to search a MultiTerm termbase within Trados Studio (by Jayne Fox) | Translator Tools | Scoop.it

"

Do you translate using Trados Studio? Do you know how to search a MultiTerm termbase within Studio? Read on to learn more.

I’m a huge fan of terminology databases and use them for all my translation projects. I find that a good termbase helps me to translate faster, because it enables me to insert terms into my translation very easily. As well as storing complex terms, I also add frequently used terms to my termbase, to make sure that I’m using them consistently throughout my translation.

I agree with Jost Zetzsche’s comment on the value of termbases, made during one of his recent webinars: “If I had to choose between giving up all of my translation memory data or all of my terminology data, I would always give up my translation memory data rather than ..."
