PDF-XChange Viewer - superior PDF viewing and annotation tool

PDF-XChange Viewer - superior PDF viewing and annotation tool | Translator Tools | Scoop.it

PDF-XChange Viewer from Tracker Software Products Ltd. is a small, fast and feature rich PDF viewing and annotation application. It is also free...

I discovered it today quite by chance - we needed to translate commented PDF files. Normally, we did it in Adobe Acrobat Reader X by using the Comments pane and "replying" to individual comments, adding translation of each comment in the reply. However, as we discovered, Acrobat Reader can only reply to regular text comments, while text that annotates rectangles, lines, clouds, etc (which are listed in the Comments pane) cannot be replied to. We had to use Adobe Acrobat (costs in excess of 200 USD in Russia), of which our company has only one license, to achieve this functionality. Quick research pointed me to PDF-XChange Viewer and I was amazed by the quality, speed and annotation functionality of this free product. The comments pane is very responsive, unlike Acrobat Reader's, and one can reply to any types of comments. A big advantage is the fact that you can copy text from the original comments - this is not possible in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader, where you need to retype text like document numbers, etc. It looks like I will not go back to Acrobat Reader again...

In addition, PDF-XChange Viewer supports word recognition (optical character recognition) of scanned PDFs into 4 languages (English, German, Spanish and French), although I did not test this functionality.

If you need to also delete, add, move, crop pages, you need to buy a license for 37.50 USD, otherwise the program is free for private and commercial use, provided it is not bundled with other software for financial gain.

A super easy way of processing JSON in Trados Studio (from Supertext AG's blog) | Translator Tools | Scoop.it

Trados Studio does not come with a built-in JSON file type definition. There are different ways of dealing with this format. One is to create your own file type definition based on the regex file type and define opening and closing patterns. This is pretty straightforward but is also prone to errors...

Stanislav Okhvat's insight:
Supertext AG has introduced an SDL Trados Studio OpenExchange filter for JSON files which are common on localization projects.

Using CAT tools for creative translation – workflow (by Riccardo Schiaffino) | Translator Tools | Scoop.it
Most professional translators use Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) tools. Many of the translators who don't use CAT tools, however, claim that CAT tools are useless for more creative translations: no time is saved by translation memories – no repetitions, fuzzy or 100% matches – while using the tool weakens the translator's writing style...

Memsource Cloud 5.6: Job-specific TM Context settings, File import setting re-use, Business Units and other features

Memsource Cloud 5.6: Job-specific TM Context settings, File import setting re-use, Business Units and other features | Translator Tools | Scoop.it

Memsource Cloud 5.6 is scheduled for release on Sunday, 15 May 2016, at 10:00 AM GMT. The most important of the new features introduced in this release is the new concept of translation memory context where users will be able to choose how in-context or perfect matches are constituted. We are also introducing a new metadata category, Business Units, which will help in the organization and structuring of especially large accounts with many users and resources...

Stanislav Okhvat's insight:
Memsource Cloud 5.6 introduces several new features. The main feature added in this release is the ability to choose how translation context is treated when translations are saved to the TM or retrieved from it: the user can choose between previous and next segment (as it was implemented before), segment key (useful for localization projects), no context (so that only one translation for a given source string exists in the TM) or automatic. In this version, you can also re-use file import settings, divide users into Business Units, set up templates for translated file names generated by the system, a new QA check. There are other features, too.

How to simply switch target and source roles in Trados Studio instead of converting PO files (from SuperText AG's blog) | Translator Tools | Scoop.it

Tired of converting PO files? Annoyed with deleting the content of the target segments before entering your translation? Want to use the target text of a PO file as source text in Trados Studio? Try out our PO file type definition for Trados Studio! It could come in really handy.

Stanislav Okhvat's insight:
SuperText AG presents a special file type definition for importing PO files into SDL Trados Studio. Unlike the built-in file type that exists in Studio, this one offers a very useful option: you can use the target text (msgstr attribute) of the PO file as the source text during translation, and the translated PO file will still contain the original source text (msgid attribute).
