"The advantages of tablets for interpreters are obvious: they are small and light, they don't take up much space in in your bag or in the booth. Noise - a well-known issue with traditional laptops - is no issue at all since they have neither a fan nor a built-in keyboard. Lastly, they are truly mobile devices because of their battery life.

However, tablets also have their weaknesses, such as restricted functionality (e.g. no Flash on iPads). All things considered, though, tablets make a lot of sense for interpreters, both in the booth and on the go. Many models come not only with WiFi access, but also provide the option of connecting to the internet via the mobile phone network, using their own SIM card.

According to the conclusion made by the author of this blog post, Aden Nichols, Pages application, available for iOS and MacOS, is the best application for editing documents on the go. The author compared the available applications on the basis of the following criteria: 1) compatibility with MS Word and its tracked changes, 2) stability and an intuitive or familiar interface, and 3) access to cloud storage. Lesser priorities include a pleasant design, collaboration abilities, formatting options, and affordability. By extension, Pages can be used not only by copyeditors, but also by translators to edit bilingual documents (e.g., bilingual RTF and Trados tagged documents).
