A Literary Scholar's Voice in the Wilderness

John Dear is a Catholic priest who has chosen an especially haunted place to keep vigil. For the past 12 years, he has lived alongside the Los Alamos National Laboratory, in New Mexico, birthplace of the atomic age and the country’s flagship nuclear facility, where he organizes regular protests. He has also written a steady stream of books and spoken widely, making him a troublesome man around town. After years of efforts to rein him in, the Jesuit order ejected Dear in December. His vocation is ever more that of a hermit.

"None of my friends are working on nukes anymore," he says. "This is the most evil place on the planet, and nobody’s talking about it."

One exception is Megan Rice, an 84-year-old nun and another longtime member of the Plowshares antinuclear movement. In 2012, with two fellow activists, Rice broke into the secure nuclear facility in Oak Ridge, Tenn., where they splashed blood and hung protest signs. The security breach made headlines and prompted a Congressional investigation—into the breach, not the nuclear weapons themselves. Rice, who is expected to be sentenced this month, may spend the rest of her life in prison for the protest.

Steve Stoute Adds New Leaders to Translation

Steve Stoute is restocking his leadership ranks at Translation with veterans of the agency and marketer worlds.

Joining as president is Nils Peyron, a former account leader at McCann Erickson and Ogilvy & Mather who most recently was chief marketing officer at Toms shoes. Peyron fills a vacancy left by the November 2012 exit of Leeann Leahy.

John Norman, meanwhile, is coming aboard as partner and chief creative officer. In the creative role, Norman, who has been CCO of TBWA\C\D in Playa del Rey, Calif. since August 2012 [see related story here], succeeds Chris Cereda, who left Translation in the spring of 2013.

Norman and Peyron become part of a management team that includes chief strategy officer John Greene and Stoute, the founder and CEO. The New York-based agency works for the likes of State Farm, Anheuser-Busch InBev, McDonald's and Coca-Cola.

Reflecting on his new leaders, Stoute said, in a statement, that "John and Nils get what we are: a nimble, innovative partner to companies who want to update or overhaul their brands without losing the essence of who they are."

Translation depends on quality of translator: Denzil Lobo - The Times of India

MANGALORE: Quality of a translation depends on quality of the translator, whose knowledge about source and target languages greatly influences the work, said Fr Denzil Lobo, Rector of St Aloysius Institutions.

Presiding over the inaugural function of seminar on 'Translation: A Transcreation' organized by PG department of English of St Aloysius College on Monday, Fr Lobo said a translation not only should be beautiful but also faithful to the original text.

Laying emphasis on significance of translating feelings of original author, he said that even advanced computer technology can not do justice to translation. "Human intervention is must to translate feelings from one language to the other," he said adding that translation is a great art which requires creativity.

V Sangeetha, associate professor and head in charge, department of English, Periyar University, Salem delivered a lecture on Translation: A Global Perspective. K S Bhagavan, retired professor in English, Mysore University who has translated maximum number of plays of Shakespeare into Kannada dwelt on 'Problems in Transcreating Shakespeare.'

Speaking sixteen languages proves no barrier at 'outstanding' Harrington Nursery School in Normanton, Derby

A DERBY nursery school where 16 different languages are spoken and English is being taught as an additional subject has been rated as "outstanding" by Government inspectors.

Harrington Nursery School received top marks from Ofsted – the Office for Standards in Education – following a two-day inspection last month.

The newly-published report praises the school in Harrington Street, Normanton, for being a "haven for children" which "opens their eyes to a wider world and prepares them extremely well for starting primary school".

The inspector, Mary Hughes, reported outstanding levels of care, nurture and high-quality teaching which give the 80 children on roll a "first-rate education".

Translating Western plays for Japanese audiences

Converting each word automatically from English into Japanese is not what translating plays written in English is all about.

“We should build a sense of reality into the characters played by Japanese actors, who cannot look like ‘Marela’ or ‘Conchita,’” said Mayuko Tokizawa, naming a couple of characters in Nilo Cruz’s play “Anna in the Tropics,” which she translated for Bungakuza, one of Japan’s most influential theater companies, which premiered the play in Tokyo last September.

“We have to make Japanese dialogue for Japanese actors to say naturally on the stage in Japan. That’s the most challenging and most interesting part of translating plays,” explained Tokizawa, 42, who has translated a number of contemporary Western plays. “This is very different from making Japanese subtitles for Western films with an all-western cast,” she added.

In translating English lines into natural Japanese, Tokizawa makes the best use of her experience as an actress and from her days as a student in the United States.

Born in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Tokizawa became interested in drama when she was a junior high school student. She made her stage debut at 15 in the 1986 Japanese premiere of the Broadway musical “Annie” in Tokyo, playing one of Annie’s friends.

“Among the cast members of ‘Annie,’ there were many internationally sophisticated girls, who were totally different from my schoolmates. I admired them and wanted to speak English like they did,” said Tokizawa, who decided to study abroad as a high school student and spent a year in 1987 living with a host family in Salem, Oregon.

It was during that time that Tokizawa was able to remarkably improve her English language skills.

“I also had firsthand experience of the American culture, which I had just imagined from Japan,” Tokizawa said, recalling her first visit to the U.S.
