KEARNEY — Can you dig it? Kearney Public Library’s summer reading program, “I Dig …”, encourages reading by patrons of all levels. Shawna Lindner, youth services librarian, sees the program as a way to keep books in front of young readers during the months without school. “It’s a fun way to keep reading books through the summer,” Lindner said. “Reading books through the summer helps kids retain reading skills they learned during the school year. It’s very important to read at least a couple of books, if not more.” The library kicks off the reading program with a celebration from 9-11 a.m. Thursday at the library at 2020 First Ave. The event includes door prizes as well as registration for “I Dig …” “We’ll also have karaoke, a DJ playing all of our dance favorites, a photo booth where people can get their pictures taken,” Linder said. “The Paws to Read dogs will be here, too.” Summer reading programs can help foster creativity, imaginative thinking and family time. Paws to Read features therapy dogs who will sit and listen to children as they read. “Usually, people come to the library as a family,” Linder said. “Quite a few of our activities on our challenge sheet incorporate working as a family unit. Kids will also get a chance to see a lot of their friends over the summer that they might miss from school — and make some new friends as well.” Delete the scoop?

It’s rare when you can pinpoint the moment of a major game changer for an industry to a single day. Usually, these shifts happen over time; and then one day, you look back and realize how momentous a particular event really was. Delete the scoop?

A popular saying has it that actions speak louder than words, but for late Chinua Achebe, both actions and words combined together are two necessary ingredients which complement each other and speak voluminously than when each stands on its own. Little one wonders at his Lustre for the use of proverbs in all his published works.

It’s been some time since the new Mass translations went into effect, butanother survey shows that priests are unhappy with the results. The 2013 Survey of U.S. Priests on the New Roman Missal from Saint John's University School of Theology Seminary of 1,536 priests demonstrates that a majority of these priests remain skeptical about the new translations. According to the survey, 59 percent do not like the new Mass. Respondents overwhelmingly indicate that the new phrasing is awkward and distracting, with 80 percent agreeing. Nearly two thirds—61 percent—think that the new translation “urgently needs to be revised,” and the same percentage does not think that the Liturgy of the Hours and other sacraments should be updated to the same style as the new missal. Taken from The Things That Nobody Knows: 501 Mysteries of Life, the Universe and Everything ($14.95, Atlantic Books, distributed in the U.S. by Trafalgar Square Publishing) Who wrote Beowulf? What did Edgar Allan Poe die of? Poe had last been seen on 27 September, when he left Richmond, Virginia, on his way home to New York. No clear evidence of his whereabouts is known until he was found in Baltimore. During his four days in the hospital, he was kept in an area reserved for drunks, and was denied any visitors. On the night before he died, he is said to have repeatedly shouted out the name 'Reynolds.' Why was Poe wearing someone else's clothes when he died? Delete the scoop?

Pretoria – The Department of Basic Education has announced that all schools will now offer an African language to all learners from Grades R to 9. The department says it is preparing for the implementation of African languages in 2014 by phasing it in this year already in selected schools in each province. Based on this exercise, provinces will determine what is required for full scale implementation in 2014. All provinces, through their Heads of Education, have committed to ensuring that African languages are implemented incrementally and effectively. The implementation of African languages requires that all learners exit at Grade 9 level having learnt an African language for at least one phase. It is perceived that African languages do not enjoy the same development and utility as English and Afrikaans. The department will therefore ensure that all African languages are equally developed and used by learners in the best interest of their learning and performance in their 12 years of schooling.
