Transformation is nothing new to Eve Ensler. But three years ago, at the height of her career, The Vagina Monologues author found herself transforming in ways she'd never imagined. Eve Ensler, 59, is an award-winning playwright, bestselling author, philanthropist and activist. Her 1996 play, The Vagina Monologues, has been translated into 48 languages and has been performed in more than 140 countries. V-Day, the activist organization that she founded in 1998, has raised $90 million to end violence against women and girls. Yet, even as her list of accomplishments grew, Ensler suffered the lasting effects of having been sexually abused as a girl by her father. Living in her head, as she describes, she felt exiled from her body and disconnected from the world. She began treating her body like a machine that had no limits, and eventually, she received a wake-up call. Then Ensler was confronted by two formidable forces—one was a war in a third-world country, the other, a battle in her own body.

It was hard not being able to read and write.” Alohilani is not alone. More than 155,000 adults in Hawaii struggle to read and write – to read a story to their keiki, fill out job applications or send an email. Hawaii Literacy works to change this by providing free one-to-one tutoring with trained volunteers for adults and parents wishing to improve their reading. Hawaii Literacy also operates a Bookmobile and family literacy programs in public housing and homeless shelters that reach more than 2,200 keiki.
Google has said its online translation service provides one billion translations a day for 200 million users, Cnet has reported. Speaking at the Google I/O show for developers, Josh Estelle, leader for Google Translate's front-end and mobile engineering, said 92% of the usage is from people outside the US. The amount of text Google translates daily is more than what's in a million books, and exceeds what professional translators handle in a full year, Estelle said.

Google has quietly dropped the “Translated Foreign Pages” search filter from the Google search options menu. Google tells us the option was removed due to lack of use, but they say they are still committed to making the Web available to as many people, in as many languages, as possible. The translated foreign pages search option enabled searchers to restrict the search results to specific languages only. So, if you want to search for something in English and then show results for that search result in French, you could have used this search option for that. Dan Russell, Google’s Search Research Scientist, who gives the Google Power Searcher class, explained how useful this feature was on his personal blog. Here is a picture of that feature:
Taghreedat, the largest Arabic crowd-sourcing initiative in the Middle East and North Africa, has announced a partnership with Coursera, the world’s leading Massive Open Online Course provider, to translate major international university courses across multiple disciplines for Arab students worldwide, for free. Leading global universities, including Stanford, Yale, Columbia, Georgia, Duke, Northwestern, Pennsylvania, Princeton and Edinburgh, are offering a number of their courses for free on Coursera in English. With this partnership, some of the world’s top university courses will be accessible for free for all Arabic-speaking users. Starting May 19, Taghreedat’s 9,000 translators, writers and editors in 37 countries worldwide will have a chance to translate two university courses, marking the official start of the collaboration with Coursera. Stanford University’s Math Think and Duke University’s Behavioral Economics will be the first two courses to be localized, with plans for more courses to follow. A group of Taghreedat translation language moderators will be managing project quality in the following weeks to ensure the courses are localized accurately and are accent-free. “This is a major milestone for Taghreedat, especially that we are looking at diversifying our localization project portfolio and focusing on Open Educational Resources as a strategic area that we are engaging our crowd-sourcing community in,” said Taghreedat co-founders Mina Takla and Sami Mubarak.

Ce mois-ci, la célèbre Ecole de Traduction et d’Interprétation de l’Université de Genève (ETI, www.unige.ch/eti) et l'UNITAR ont signé un accord de partenariat pour offrir des stages dans les programmes de formation de l’UNITAR aux étudiants de l’ETI. L'objectif de ce partenariat est de proposer une expérience concrète en traduction mais aussi d’assurer une grande qualité de traduction des supports de formation de l’UNITAR dans les langues fortement demandées, comme l'espagnol pour la région de l'Amérique latine ou le français pour l'Afrique francophone ou dans d'autres langues dans lesquelles l’ETI possède une expertise reconnue en traduction dans le domaine des affaires internationales et du développement. Les étudiants ont ainsi l’occasion de passer dans les différents programmes de l'UNITAR au cours d’un stage de 3 à 6 mois leur permettant d'élargir leurs connaissances des priorités des Nations Unies en matière de développement des capacités, en complexité de communication et en formation de gouvernements locaux, de diplomates ou d’autres types d’organisations communautaires. A ce jour, l’ETI a fourni sept étudiants pour adapter et traduire des cours de formation en ligne de l’anglais vers l’espagnol, à l’attention du personnel des gouvernements locaux d’Amérique latine et en matière de diplomatie multilatérale. En contrepartie, les étudiants peuvent suivre gratuitement une formation de leur choix à l’UNITAR. Au vu du développement de ce partenariat, l'UNITAR souhaite non seulement coopérer avec l’Ecole de Traduction et d’Interprétation mais aussi avec les autres départements de recherche de pointe et d’éducation de l’Université de Genève.

Une journée de souvenir et de réflexion sur la contribution de l’un des plus avertis érudits en Afrique à la promotion de la Francophone. Amadou Hampaté Bâ, même disparu, a pu réunir le samedi 18 mai dernier, le monde universitaire autour d’une table ronde : «La langue française, identité et différence» était le thème de ce forum qui se situait dans le cadre de la commémoration du 22e anniversaire de sa disparition. Le jardin de la Fondation Amadou Hampaté Bâ sis à Cocody-Danga a servi de cadre à ces moments de réflexion sur le rapport d’Amadou Hampaté Bâ et par extension des Africains francophones à la langue française. Pour planter le décor, la directrice exécutive de la Fondataion Amadou Hampaté Bâ, Roukiatou Hampaté Bâ, initiatrice de la table ronde, a pris la première la parole pour dire, au nom de la famille Hampaté Bâ, sa reconnaissance au monde universitaire, aux autorités ivoiriennes et surtout au ministère de la Culture pour leur soutien. Pour elle, Amadou Hampaté Bâ considère que la beauté des langues africaines vient de sa diversité la comparant à «la beauté du tapis qui provient de la diversité de ses couleurs» Pour le sage, les langues africaines méritent d’être codifiées afin de les hisser au même niveau que les autres langues. Cette vision du père de Wangrin et de Bagoumawel n’était pas, selon Roukiatou Bâ, une volonté pour le savant son père d’extirper l’Afrique de la communauté francophone. Bien au contraire, selon le témoignage de Roukiatou Bâ, Amadou Hampaté a affirmé de son vivant que «c’est grâce au français qu’il a pu communiquer avec son ami Houphouët-Boigny». L’alphabet peul qu’il a créé avait donc pour but de donner à nos langues africaines de quitter le statut de langue de l’oralité pour être des langues écrites.

Although purists look down on slang, some language experts view slang as “the people’s poetry,” and want to learn more – such as Professor Anne Curzan, who is actively learning new slang words from her students. She’s Professor of English at the University of Michigan, where she also holds appointments in the linguistics department and the School of Education. NEW DELHI: India's Just Dial search engine on Monday launched an initial public offer to raise up to $174 million, marking the biggest share offering so far in 2013 and one of the largest by an Indian Internet firm. The Mumbai-based local business search firm, which began operations in the mid-1990s as a telephone-based directory and moved later to the Internet, is offloading one-quarter of its equity in the initial public offer (IPO). Founded by the company's managing director, V.S.S. Mani, Just Dial features 9.1 million Indian business listings on its Justdial.com site while nearly three-quarters of its revenues comes from advertisers. It aims to tap the buoyant Indian stock market and sell 17.5 million shares to raise up to 950 billion rupees ($174 million). Mani established the company, which posted profit last year of 523 million rupees, with seed capital of just $1,000. The company's growth has been fuelled by India's explosive expansion of mobile and Internet subscribers.

La langue française ne redeviendra désirable, aux yeux des Français comme des peuples du monde, que si elle s’inscrit clairement dans un combat planétaire, en retrouvant sa vocation de porte-parole de la liberté et de l’émancipation des peuples face à l’hégémonie du moment. C’est le sens du titre franglais volontairement iconoclaste choisi par l’UPR pour ce colloque : « La Françamérique ? No future ! »
