Date limite : 21 juin 2013

TRADUIRE À PLUSIEURS : ANCIENS DÉFIS ET NOUVEAUX ENJEUX

COLLABORATIVE TRANSLATIONS : OLD CHALLENGES AND NEW SCENARIOS

COLLOQUE INTERNATIONAL

Collaborations entre plusieurs traducteurs, pour favoriser la qualité de l’expertise, ou pour des raisons de temps, comme c’est le cas pour les instant books et la traduction de spécialité ;Collaborations entre auteur et traducteur(s), comme dans le cas de l’écrivain albanais Ismail Kadaré et de son traducteur français Jusuf Vrioni ; ou encore, à un niveau différent, les rencontres de Günter Grass avec ses traducteurs à l’occasion de la sortie de chacun de ses romans ;Collaborations (souvent cachées) des écrivains-traducteurs avec des traducteurs professionnels ;Collaborations dans les traductions en crowdsourcing ou en communauté ;

Porteurs du projet : Peter Schnyder (peter.schnyder AT uha.fr), Enrico Monti (enrico.monti AT uha.fr)

5 Unsolved Literary Mysteries

5 Unsolved Literary Mysteries | Metaglossia: The Translation World | Scoop.it

Taken from The Things That Nobody Knows: 501 Mysteries of Life, the Universe and Everything ($14.95, Atlantic Books, distributed in the U.S. by Trafalgar Square Publishing)

Who wrote Beowulf?
The epic poem Beowulf is the most important surviving work of Anglo-Saxon literature. Known only from a single manuscript called the Nowell Codex, it is a tale of heroic dragon-slaying exploits so potent that a translation of its 3,182 lines into modern English won Seamus Heaney the Whitbread Book of the Year Prize in 1999. Yet we know almost nothing of the origins of Beowulf. The best that can be said is that it was written somewhere between the eighth and eleventh centuries. As for the identity of the writer, we have no idea at all. The story may, however, have existed for some time, being passed down in the oral tradition, before finally being written down.

What did Edgar Allan Poe die of?
On 3 October 1849 the forty-year-old Edgar Allan Poe was found in great distress and a state of delirium on the streets of Baltimore, Maryland. He was taken to Washington College Hospital, where he died four days later, having never in that time been coherent enough to explain what had happened.

Poe had last been seen on 27 September, when he left Richmond, Virginia, on his way home to New York. No clear evidence of his whereabouts is known until he was found in Baltimore. During his four days in the hospital, he was kept in an area reserved for drunks, and was denied any visitors. On the night before he died, he is said to have repeatedly shouted out the name 'Reynolds.'

Why was Poe wearing someone else's clothes when he died?

Schools to offer African languages from Grade R | SA News

Pretoria – The Department of Basic Education has announced that all schools will now offer an African language to all learners from Grades R to 9.

The department says it is preparing for the implementation of African languages in 2014 by phasing it in this year already in selected schools in each province.

Based on this exercise, provinces will determine what is required for full scale implementation in 2014.

All provinces, through their Heads of Education, have committed to ensuring that African languages are implemented incrementally and effectively.

The implementation of African languages requires that all learners exit at Grade 9 level having learnt an African language for at least one phase.

It is perceived that African languages do not enjoy the same development and utility as English and Afrikaans. The department will therefore ensure that all African languages are equally developed and used by learners in the best interest of their learning and performance in their 12 years of schooling.

Dig into reading

Dig into reading | Metaglossia: The Translation World | Scoop.it

KEARNEY — Can you dig it?

Kearney Public Library’s summer reading program, “I Dig …”, encourages reading by patrons of all levels. Shawna Lindner, youth services librarian, sees the program as a way to keep books in front of young readers during the months without school.

“It’s a fun way to keep reading books through the summer,” Lindner said. “Reading books through the summer helps kids retain reading skills they learned during the school year. It’s very important to read at least a couple of books, if not more.”

The library kicks off the reading program with a celebration from 9-11 a.m. Thursday at the library at 2020 First Ave. The event includes door prizes as well as registration for “I Dig …”

“We’ll also have karaoke, a DJ playing all of our dance favorites, a photo booth where people can get their pictures taken,” Linder said. “The Paws to Read dogs will be here, too.”

Summer reading programs can help foster creativity, imaginative thinking and family time. Paws to Read features therapy dogs who will sit and listen to children as they read.

“Usually, people come to the library as a family,” Linder said. “Quite a few of our activities on our challenge sheet incorporate working as a family unit. Kids will also get a chance to see a lot of their friends over the summer that they might miss from school — and make some new friends as well.”

A popular saying has it that actions speak louder than words, but for late Chinua Achebe, both actions and words combined together are two necessary ingredients which complement each other and speak voluminously than when each stands on its own. Little one wonders at his Lustre for the use of proverbs in all his published works.

According to Achebe, proverbs are the palm oil with which words are eaten. This view add meaning to the definition of proverbs as short and pithy sayings which defines a cultural language and encapsulates society’s values and beliefs.

Priests still unhappy with new Mass translations

Priests still unhappy with new Mass translations | Metaglossia: The Translation World | Scoop.it

It’s been some time since the new Mass translations went into effect, butanother survey shows that priests are unhappy with the results.

The 2013 Survey of U.S. Priests on the New Roman Missal from Saint John's University School of Theology Seminary of 1,536 priests demonstrates that a majority of these priests remain skeptical about the new translations.

According to the survey, 59 percent do not like the new Mass. Respondents overwhelmingly indicate that the new phrasing is awkward and distracting, with 80 percent agreeing. Nearly two thirds—61 percent—think that the new translation “urgently needs to be revised,” and the same percentage does not think that the Liturgy of the Hours and other sacraments should be updated to the same style as the new missal.

Language translation software market driving forces are related to the Internet usefulness to people in every locality. Smart phones are the latest market driver for software language translation. Every enterprise has to make its web sites user friendly in every locality in which it has a market. Globally integrated enterprises generally have a presence in from 80 to 170 countries. A priest reacts to priests reacting to the new translation | Fr. Z's Blog (olim: What Does The Prayer Really Say?) | Metaglossia: The Translation World | Scoop.it

Over at the Deacon’s Bench, Rev. Mr. Kandra has a great post.  A priest wrote to Dcn. Kandra as a reaction to the whiny survey of priests about the new translation.  My emphases and comments:

After reading this latest post on how priests reportedly dislike the new Missal, a priest friend dropped me an email to share his impressions:

One of the things going on here is very important, but I suspect most priests have never thought about it.

I concelebrated at a Funeral Mass with an older priest (about 75) about four months after the new Missal came into use. I was the main celebrant. His parts were reading the Gospel and the sections of the Eucharistic Prayer given to concelebrants.

He did this with real difficulty, the reason being that he kept trying to look at the congregation as he read. This is much easier with the older, easily memorized text. This book keeps you needing to read from it.  [It makes you think about what the texts mean, too.  One day some of these priests will actuallythink about the texts and they will realize that most of the time they arenot talking to the congregation.]
