Priests don't like new translations for mass ceremony, St. John's survey says

Priests don't like new translations for mass ceremony, St. John's survey says | Metaglossia: The Translation World | Scoop.it

Find breaking local news & commentary from Minneapolis, St. Paul, the Twin Cities metro area and Minnesota.

It looks like not all Catholic clergy are crazy about the new translation of the Roman missal used in mass ceremonies.

That’s according to a survey released Tuesday by St. John’s School of Theology in Collegeville, Minn. It found 59 percent of priests surveyed do not like the new mass translations, which began to be used in fall 2011.

“Eighty percent said they agreed with an assessment that the Latin to English translation is 'awkward and distracting,' according to the St. John’s study. Sixty-one percent also said the new language needs to be revised “urgently,” according to the National Catholic Reporter

Yemen tribesmen kidnap Swiss, Kenyan Red Cross staff

Yemen tribesmen kidnap Swiss, Kenyan Red Cross staff | Metaglossia: The Translation World | Scoop.it

Armed tribesmen kidnapped two expatriate employees of the International Committee of the Red Cross and their interpreter in southern Yemen on Monday, witnesses and militia sources said.

The Swiss and Kenyan ICRC staffers were abducted in the southern city of Jaar, which was held by loyalists of al-Qaeda for 12 months until it was recaptured by the army in June last year, militia commander Hussein al-Wahayshi said.

Gunmen from the same al-Marakisha tribe briefly held two Indian ICRC staff last week.

Witnesses said the kidnappers stopped the group's car and abducted the male Swiss staffer.

A tribal source said the Kenyan and the Yemeni interpreter insisted on staying with their colleague, even though the kidnappers told them they could go.

Their Yemeni driver fled.

The trio have been taken to a mountainous area north of Jaar, in Abyan province, the tribal source said requesting anonymity.

On Wednesday, armed tribesmen briefly held two Indian ICRC employees in Jaar, before pro-government militia interceded for their release.

KantanMT: Setting the Benchmark for Cloud Machine Translation in the Language Industry

KantanMT: Setting the Benchmark for Cloud Machine Translation in the Language Industry | Metaglossia: The Translation World | Scoop.it

Xcelerator Machine Translation Ltd. is pleased to announce the official launch of its cloud-based statistical Machine Translation platformKantanMT.com in June 2013. The Enterprise Ireland ‘high potential start-up’ founded by well-known industry entrepreneur Tony O’Dowd aims to fill a gap within the localisation industry by offering an MT platform that is easy to use, easy to manage and extremely powerful.

Members of the KantanMT community have been enjoying free usage of the platform since the launch of the BETA site in September 2012, giving them the opportunity to experiment with machine translation and to develop new business strategies around it.

One member notes that: "As a technology, machine translation will become even more fundamental than translation memory for LSPs in the years ahead. Making it successful will require not only investment in knowledge development and process integration, but also to find the right platform for your needs. Simplicity and flexibility made us choose KantanMT," Teddy Bengtsson, Founder/Director, Roundtable Studio.

KantanMT.com has been well backed by significant VC investments from Delta Partners, Enterprise Ireland and several private investors and is now accelerating and scaling its platform to meet the growing demands of the expanding MT community. It is currently in BETA testing of a REST- based API which will enable members to translate segments individually, in real-time, and still benefit from the high-quality, secure and user-controlled translation service that KantanMT customers expect.

The official launch of KantanMT in June marks a turning point for this innovative young company which is already making its mark in the translation industry. To date, KantanMT.com has signed up over 1,500 localisation service providers, who have uploaded over six billion words of training data and translated over 360 million words on the KantanMT.com platform.

Saad Abulhab Launches Kickstarter Fundraiser for New Translation of the Ancient Epic of Gilgamesh

Saad Abulhab Launches Kickstarter Fundraiser for New Translation of the Ancient Epic of Gilgamesh | Metaglossia: The Translation World | Scoop.it

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/22/2013 -- Reading an adventurous action novel written over 4000 years ago is a thrilling adventure in itself!

The Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest masterpiece of world literature, with an Akkadian version dating back to at least 2100 BCE.

Although the principal theme of this epic is fear of death and human desire for an eternal life, it offers much more. With an astonishing and even captivating style, the tales of the epic touch on several philosophical and psychological topics such as loyalty and friendship, family values, and the moral advantage of civilization over savagery.

Following each reading and rereading of several scholarly translations of this epic in multiple languages, Saad Abulhab was left with many unanswered questions, and he felt a burning desire to read it in its original language. After all, these translations are based on modern day dictionaries, compiled from scratch by hundreds of scholars over several decades, of a newly assembled language primarily utilizing inscriptional data along with plenty of assumptions and speculation.

SBB lança primeiro livro bíblico traduzido na língua cigana - Notícias Gospel Prime

SBB lança primeiro livro bíblico traduzido na língua cigana - Notícias Gospel Prime | Metaglossia: The Translation World | Scoop.it

Taking Tamil cinema to the global stage - The Times of India

Taking Tamil cinema to the global stage - The Times of India | Metaglossia: The Translation World | Scoop.it

Kollywood personalities share their views on what can be done to get local films international exposure.

Vishal: There are two factors that ought to be taken in to consideration if one wants regional cinema to break the barriers — lack of knowledge or proper channel through which a filmmaker can showcase his films at festivals, and the reluctance to subtitle their films while releasing it. Filmmakers, and everyone part of the industry, must take efforts to screen deserving films at international festivals. Also, they must be open to subtitling. All the Hindi films are subtitled before their release, but ours are not. Subtitling films will help our cause.

Lakshmi Rai: Tamil films have all the necessary qualifications to compete on international platforms. We are known for our talent and standard storytelling. However, I think we are not keen on promoting our films on the international stage. Our filmmakers need to work on this and project the film for foreign audiences too. Production houses need to make efforts to screen Tamil films at all international festivals. If we can do that, we will definitely receive laudable reviews from the global audience.

How Google will change the world again - Business Today - Business News | Metaglossia: The Translation World | Scoop.it

At a well-built six feet, Nikesh Arora commands a presence when he walks into a room. Much of it is also because he is the man tasked with bringing in revenues of more than $50 billion - that is more than Punjab's annual income - at Google, the Internet giant.

On a recent unusually hot Thursday evening, the Google Chief Business Officer drags his weary self into a meeting at a New Delhi coffee shop. The six days he's been in the city he was born in have been unforgiving. Breakfast sit-downs, board meetings, sales reviews, client interactions, dinners, and family commitments. Arora is sapped out crisscrossing the capital region of Delhi, the world's largest urban sprawl, in the searing summer heat.

Afghan interpreters' resettlement scheme 'does not go far enough'

Afghan interpreters' resettlement scheme 'does not go far enough' | Metaglossia: The Translation World | Scoop.it

Lawyers representing Afghan interpreters have welcomed news of a resettlement scheme but expressed concerns that it does not go far enough.

Under the proposals, any interpreters who have put themselves in physical danger working outside British military bases will be offered resettlement in the UK if they have been working for the British forces for more than 12 months at the point of their redundancy. It is estimated that about half the interpreters working for the UK forces – roughly 600 – will qualify.

Rosa Curling, a human rights solicitor with Leigh Day representing three interpreters who began a legal case against the government, said on Wednesday: "Whilst we await the full details of the scheme, we are delighted that the bravery of the Afghan interpreters now seems to have been recognised.

"These men employed by the British authorities in Afghanistan have often been on the frontline with our troops, risking their lives, and now face death threats as a result of their work. The announcement today is a huge step in the right direction, which will come as a great relief to our clients and their families."

But she voiced concerns about some of the roughly 600 interpreters who will not qualify for resettlement, either because they do not have 12 months' continuous service or are deemed not to have faced sufficient physical danger in their daily work.
