Researchers Study Impact of Texting on Language

Canadian researchers are calling for people to donate their text messages for study, as interest over digital communication's impact on language continues.

...

... one researcher recorded 29 different text shortcuts for the word "tomorrow," concluding using textisms required more sophisticated literacy skills. In addition, textese may actually boost children's writing and reading skills, because the study found children who are good at quickly creating and interpreting textisms are also proficient at spelling and reading familiar and novel words.

Indigenous Focus: Chile’s Indigenous Peoples Seek Government Protection of Languages - ILC News - Chile's local newspaper in English | ILC News – Chile's local newspaper in English

Tuesday, February 21st, was the “International Mother Language Day,” although in Chile it is sometimes referred to as “International Day of Indigenous Languages.” International Mother Language Day is a creation of UNESCO and has been celebrated each year since 2000 and, as its name implies, the purpose is to promote native languages around the globe. In Chile, Indigenous peoples took time during the day to promote their own languages and cultures in a variety of ways, including celebrations, marches and public statements.

In Santiago, one of the largest organizations dedicated to Indigenous languages—Red por los Derechos Educativos y Lingüísticos de los Pueblos Indígenas de Chile (Red EIB)—released a public statement summarizing the current state of Indigenous languages in the country and calling on the government to take concrete steps to preserve those same languages. Red EIB indicated that Chile originally had eight spoken Indigenous languages, but now that number has dropped to four, and none of those four languages are spoken by more than one-third of their respective populations. The statement went on to say that action was required to reverse this trend.

Language Magazine » International Mother Language Day

Nelson Mandela once said that “if you talk to a man in a language he understands,
that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart”. The
language of our thoughts and our emotions is our most valuable asset.
Multilingualism is our ally in ensuring quality education for all, in promoting inclusion
and in combating discrimination. Building genuine dialogue is premised on respect
for languages. Each representation of a better life, each development goal is
expressed in a language, with specific words to bring it to life and communicate it.
Languages are who we are; by protecting them, we protect ourselves.
UNESCO has celebrated International Mother Language Day for 12 years now and
directs its energies towards protecting linguistic diversity. This thirteenth celebration
is dedicated to multilingualism for inclusive education. The work of researchers and
the impact of multilingualism policies have proven that people perceive intuitively
that linguistic diversity accelerates the achievement of the Millennium Development
Goals and Education for All goals in particular. Use of the mother tongue at school
is a powerful remedy against illiteracy. The challenge, however, lies in achieving
this truth in the classroom. Excluded population groups, such as indigenous
peoples, are often those whose mother tongues are ignored by education systems.

Google Explains Translation Glitch | Asbarez Armenian News

Concerned internet users this week initiated an online campaign after one activist, Lebanese-Armenian Serouj Baghdassarian, noticed that Google’s online translation service (translate.google.com) was mistakenly translating “ÔµÕ½ Õ½Õ«Ö€Õ¸Ö‚Õ´ Õ¥Õ´ Õ°Õ¡ÕµÕ¥Ö€Õ«Õ¶” (“I love Armenians”) to “I love Turkey.”
“Google Translate is an automated system. It makes guesses based on patterns gleaned from large bodies of human-translated text. It doesn’t do word-by-word dictionary-style translation,” Jason Freidenfelds, from Google’s global communications and public affairs department, told the Armenian Weekly.

W&K :: Call for Papers: European Literatures on the Move: Transnationality and Transculturality in a Historical Perspective

Workshop at Salzburg University on June 1 and 2, 2012. Please submit your application of a panel representing a CHLEL-project by March 15, 2012.

Call for Papers

The workshop on transnationality and transculturality at the Centre for Arts & Humanities at Salzburg University on June 1 and 2, 2012 will focus on these concepts form a historical and European perspective. Transnationality situates itself at the interface between local and global, national and international. It aims to move away from narrow national literary histories towards broader concepts of literary and cultural developments such as diaspora, exile, migration, or the postcolonial as instances of transcendence of the confines of national boundaries. The shift towards the transnational as a means of understanding literary production and representation has usually been regarded a reflection of the multifold processes of globalization and migration that have characterized the 20th Century.

Decision by courts to only use translators from one agency causes widespread disruption to judicial system | Mancunian Matters

A decision to use court translators only through one agency is resulting in nationwide disruption to the judicial system.

Dozens of protesters gathered outside Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court on Monday evening to voice their concerns on the issue.

A deal made on February 1 between the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) and the Applied Language Solutions (ALS) dictated that all translator bookings had to go through that single company.

Interpreters: walking a tightrope

What makes a good translator might be open to interpretation, but it's clear what translates into being a good interpreter. Interpreters are quite simply the European Parliament's tightrope walkers. Always performing under pressure, they need to find the right balance between speed and accuracy. But if they fail, there is no safety net to catch them. Let's take a look back-stage at these linguistic daredevils.
