Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Terminology and Reference Section, Documentation Division, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) at Headquarters and the incumbent reports to the Chief of the Terminology and Reference Section.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
· Monitors documentation and other materials and identify changes, developments, linguistic inconsistencies and variations in different areas of terminology used in the United Nations.
· Develops new terminology for use where none exists in the target language.
· Carries out linguistic research and prepare terminological bulletins and glossaries, technical vocabularies and related language tools.
· Counsels and assists language staff and briefs them on the procedures and practices of the Section, terminology work and a broad range of technical subjects as required.
· Establishes terminology standards
· Contributes terms and titles, along with definitions and notes, in English and/or in the assigned language to the terminology database and is responsible for the relevance and accuracy of this data.
· Proposes solutions to terminology issues raised by staff members and conducts documentary research and consultations to this end.
· Answers terminology queries from other departments of the Secretariat, specialized agencies, governmental and non-governmental agencies and other outside bodies.
· Keeps abreast of developments in machine-assisted translation and terminology
· Scans current documents and specialized journals in order to keep abreast of terminology developments in the assigned language in the fields of activity of United Nations bodies.
· Coordinates terminology work and projects with other duty stations and, where appropriate, with specialized agencies, to avoid duplication and eliminate gaps.
· Maintains close contact with language specialists both within and outside the Organization, in order to promote the use of correct and uniform terminology in the United Nations documents.
· Counsels and supervises the work of junior staff and interns.
· Identifies and recommends books and CD-ROMs for acquisition by the language library.
· Represents the Section in meetings relating to areas of substantive interest, bringing to the attention of the Chief of Section areas that in view of the needs of the organization require terminological research and investigation.
· Supervises the work done by the terminology assistants and validates the records they created.
· Contributes to the definition of individual goals and the yearly performance evaluation of Terminology Assistants (e-PAS), under the guidance of the Chief of Section.

Education
A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status. Candidates for this position must have passed the relevant United Nations Competitive Examination for Translators, Verbatim Reporters or Editors, or an equivalent competitive examination of another international organization, preferably within the United Nations system.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years experience as a translator or terminologist, including at least three years as a translator or terminologist within the United Nations.
Languages
A perfect command of Arabic, which must be the candidate's main language, and excellent knowledge of at least two other official languages of the United Nations, as tested by the relevant Competitive Examination, are required.
