Job Title: Terminologist

Main Responsibilities include:

The terminology group helps product developers, writers, and translators use the correct terminology in IBM products and materials. The group currently has an open position for a junior terminologist. Regular tasks include creating and updating terminological entries in a multilingual terminology database, and identifying terms from an automatically extracted corpus that are relevant to translators. The position includes the following additional responsibilities:
• Researching and defining new terms
• Using a terminology management system to create, update, or streamline definitions, and add other metadata such as parts of speech, grammatical information, and context sentences

Clinical Terminologist

You would report to the Director of Clinical Terminology. You would be expected to do heads-down terminology work as well as provide clinical review of the work of other terminologists on the team. You will be asked to take responsibility for and lead new initiatives including feasibility and level of effort assessments.

Responsibilities (examples):

Clinical overview and review of new terminology creation and mapping
Clinical overview of term request process including mapping and new term creation
Domain and terminology support for our sales and marketing organization
Project ownership for terminology projects including analysis, clinical overview, and communication with customer and business owners
Data analysis and discovery using database tools including writing SQL queries
Participate in weekly staff meetings
Active participant in editorial policy discussion and documentation
Takes initiative for proactive terminology harvesting
Lead project initiatives
Do feasibility and level of effort assessments
Skills/Qualifications:

Professional credentials as R.N., N.P., P.A.-C, or other clinical discipline
3+ years clinical experience
Formal informatics training a strong plus
Familiarity with, and preferably experience working with, clinical terminologies, including SNOMED-CT, eg mapping, modelling, or development of clinical terminologies
Excellent knowledge of English vocabulary and grammar
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Self-motivated
Detail-oriented
Enjoys word puzzles, word games, etc.
Experience with databases a plus

This position is located in the Terminology and Reference Section, Documentation Division, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) at Headquarters and the incumbent reports to the Chief of the Terminology and Reference Section.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

· Monitors documentation and other materials and identify changes, developments, linguistic inconsistencies and variations in different areas of terminology used in the United Nations.

· Develops new terminology for use where none exists in the target language.

· Carries out linguistic research and prepare terminological bulletins and glossaries, technical vocabularies and related language tools.

· Counsels and assists language staff and briefs them on the procedures and practices of the Section, terminology work and a broad range of technical subjects as required.

· Establishes terminology standards

· Contributes terms and titles, along with definitions and notes, in English and/or in the assigned language to the terminology database and is responsible for the relevance and accuracy of this data.

· Proposes solutions to terminology issues raised by staff members and conducts documentary research and consultations to this end.

· Answers terminology queries from other departments of the Secretariat, specialized agencies, governmental and non-governmental agencies and other outside bodies.

· Keeps abreast of developments in machine-assisted translation and terminology

· Scans current documents and specialized journals in order to keep abreast of terminology developments in the assigned language in the fields of activity of United Nations bodies.

· Coordinates terminology work and projects with other duty stations and, where appropriate, with specialized agencies, to avoid duplication and eliminate gaps.

· Maintains close contact with language specialists both within and outside the Organization, in order to promote the use of correct and uniform terminology in the United Nations documents.

· Counsels and supervises the work of junior staff and interns.

· Identifies and recommends books and CD-ROMs for acquisition by the language library.

· Represents the Section in meetings relating to areas of substantive interest, bringing to the attention of the Chief of Section areas that in view of the needs of the organization require terminological research and investigation.

· Supervises the work done by the terminology assistants and validates the records they created.

· Contributes to the definition of individual goals and the yearly performance evaluation of Terminology Assistants (e-PAS), under the guidance of the Chief of Section.

Education

A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status. Candidates for this position must have passed the relevant United Nations Competitive Examination for Translators, Verbatim Reporters or Editors, or an equivalent competitive examination of another international organization, preferably within the United Nations system.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years experience as a translator or terminologist, including at least three years as a translator or terminologist within the United Nations.

Languages

A perfect command of Arabic, which must be the candidate's main language, and excellent knowledge of at least two other official languages of the United Nations, as tested by the relevant Competitive Examination, are required.

Terminologists facilitate the editing and translation process by researching and locating information or past publications which might help language staff produce high-quality translations. Terminologists are dedicated professionals who ensure accuracy, appropriateness and consistency of usage of terms in the United Nations.

They advise and consult other UN offices and bodies who draft, translate or edit in their respective language, and answer queries and provide guidance in terminology usage.

Their tasks encompass monitoring documentations and identifying changes, developments or linguistics inconstancies and variations in different areas of terminology such as organisational nomenclature, functional titles, administrative and budgetary matters, and various other areas.

What is Terminology?

To put it simply, Terminology is the discipline concerned with understanding and managing terminologies. Over the years, Terminology has developed theories and methods that are distinguishable from those of its most related discipline, lexicology. Terminology deals with concepts and their designations, whereas lexicology deals with words and their meanings.

Function

The Terminology/Language Technology (TLT) Unit is part of the Language Services Division (LGS) within the ECB’s Directorate General Secretariat and Language Services. The Unit is responsible for providing terminology and language technology support to the ECB’s Translators and Lawyer-linguists – and to the linguistic staff at the central banks of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB) – in their work of preparing the ECB’s official publications, legal acts, and other communications-related activities in the official EU languages.

The successful candidate will join a team of 4 Terminologists/Language Technologists and a Terminology/ Language Technology Assistant and will be expected to work on several terminology and language technology-related assignments and to provide assistance to the users of the ECB’s chosen computer-assisted translation tools.

With the help of interviews and a table calculation it is possible to calculate the costs incurred by a company when there is no terminology management. It is also possible to determine how the benefits of technology can be increased through a combination of personnel and software.
For translators, the answer to the question “Is a translation memory system worth it?” appears to be pretty simple. The return on investment, ROI in short, can be calculated from the rate of reuse and translation volume for the software with which the already existing translations can be reused and specified terminology can be displayed. “Is a terminology management system worth it?” – this question doesn’t have an easy answer on the other hand. If one also enquires into why a company requires a separate employee for terminology management across the company, the matter becomes even more complex.
Although questions regarding the costs and benefits of terminology work cannot be answered easily, it is still possible to find answers – even in figures. Thus, a company can use a cost-benefit analysis to calculate the position of a part- or full-time terminologist. And the cost that incurs every day due to a lack of terminology management is compared with the benefits gained from a centralized terminology management.

This position is responsible for building and maintaining a glossary for the global Family Search organization. It involves researching, collecting, and documenting technical terms. This person will work closely with Accrocheck IQ to build, test, and deploy appropriate rules. It requires a strong command of the English language, along with excellent writing , project management, and interpersonal communication skills. Might eventually be responsible for reviewing user interface designs and code strings in software to ensure compliance with the correct terminology guidelines.
