Many businesses now utilise Blogs to attract traffic to their websites and promote their expertise to others in their particular industry or their target markets. Unfortunately, many give up this activity because their Blog fails to gain the traction needed to produce results, within a reasonable time frame. Many free online tools are now available to make the job of attracting large numbers of visitors to any Blog and this article provides great information on such tools.

Urban Sustainability and the Fundamental Importance of Water

Urban Sustainability and the Fundamental Importance of Water | Translation for sustainability | Scoop.it
Really smart people are putting their heads together more frequently to discuss and find solutions to the enormously complex issue of urban sustainability and what the city of the future will look like. They have diverse backgrounds and often long and impressive resumes that can be daunting. I have spent virtually my whole career with one organization called the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) and am retiring after several decades leading it – so the primary lens through which I see urban sustainability is water management. I have thought that perhaps my background biases me to the fundamental importance of water among the various infrastructure sectors but I have come to believe it not a bias but a reality.

Urban greens are integral components of urban ecosystem, contributing towards quality of life and sustainable urban development. Urban greens can help in creating Low Carbon Society (LCS) by playing an integral role through sequestering carbon. India is undergoing significant change in the process and pace of its urbanization. As the growing population becomes more urban, the importance of the way urban areas are developed and managed will be a central point of intervention for addressing climate change and maintaining low carbon trajectories in Indian cities.

Cleaning Up Urban Waterways With Manmade Islands [Limpiar canales urbanos con islas artificiales]

Cleaning Up Urban Waterways With Manmade Islands [Limpiar canales urbanos con islas artificiales] | Translation for sustainability | Scoop.it

About 10 miles west of central London, Hanwell is one of the towns that sits along the River Brent, a tributary of the Thames. As is true with many urban rivers, the Brent is bordered by concrete walls as it flows through towns and has been heavily polluted by industrial effluent and sewage.

Recently, a local environmental nonprofit called the Canal and River Trust wanted to restore the natural riverbank, but was thwarted from taking out the concrete retaining walls because of concerns over flooding. But the group found a clever alternative—a system of floating wetlands that would bring back the natural edge.

Urban Ecosystem Services for Resilience Planning and Management in New York City

Urban Ecosystem Services for Resilience Planning and Management in New York City | Translation for sustainability | Scoop.it
We review the current state of knowledge about urban ecosystem services in New York City (NYC) and how these services are regulated, planned for, and managed. Focusing on ecosystem services that have presented challenges in NYC—including stormwater quality enhancement and flood control, drinking water quality, food provisioning and recreation—we find that mismatches between the scale of production and scale of management occur where service provision is insufficient. Adequate production of locally produced services and services which are more accessible when produced locally is challenging in the context of dense urban development that is characteristic of NYC. Management approaches are needed to address scale mismatches in the production and consumption of ecosystem services. By coordinating along multiple scales of management and promoting best management practices, urban leaders have an opportunity to ensure that nature and ecosystem processes are protected in cities to support the delivery of fundamental urban ecosystem services.

NASA Explains Why You Should Live On A Tree-Lined Street--And A Tree-Lined City

NASA Explains Why You Should Live On A Tree-Lined Street--And A Tree-Lined City | Translation for sustainability | Scoop.it

Forget global warming. Well, don’t forget it completely, because it’s probably going to kill us all. But forget it for a moment, while we take a look at another climate-related effect: city warming. A new NASA study shows that trees and plant-life are essential to keeping our cities cool and not just because they’re nice to sit under on a sunny day.

Cities are like giant storage heaters made up of what NASA calls "impervious surfaces"—roads, buildings, concrete. This causes what's known as the urban heat island effect, where a city’s temperature is set a few degrees above the surrounding countryside thanks to the heat retention of all that city infrastructure.

But the new study shows that the amount of green space in the city has a big effect on just how hot our urban heat islands get.

Trees in a human-modified tropical landscape: Species and trait composition and potential ecosystem services

Trees in a human-modified tropical landscape: Species and trait composition and potential ecosystem services | Translation for sustainability | Scoop.it

Abstract

Worldwide, large areas of the tropics are transformed into simplified ecosystems characterised by altered tree species composition and diversity. Human activities in these landscapes have a strong effect on the land cover and exert a selective force on tree species and functional traits, hereby potentially shaping the distribution of ecosystem services in the landscape. The aim of this study was to asses how the land use determines tree species assemblages, their associated traits and potential ecosystem services, which was studied for 589 systematically sampled locations in the Afromontane highlands of Taita Hills (SE Kenya). Several tree traits were non-random distributed in the human-dominated landscape. For instance, on croplands (70% of the sampled locations) belonged 66.5% of the observed species to the exotic tree species group. This group was characterised by significantly larger seeds and fruits, corresponding with the abundance of many fruit trees. Also three functional traits (i.e. economic function, nitrogen fixation and agroforestry potential) were clearly associated with this group. The cloud forest tree species group and small-leaved indigenous group were significantly more present on woodes sites and homesteads (∼42%). However, no functional traits were unique for both indigenous groups, implying that farmers may exchange them by exotics, which could be catalysed by the loss of local knowledge about indigenous tree resources and benefits. Other indigenous species, including endemic or late-successional species were rare or absent in the matrix and their conservation can only be guaranteed by protecting the remaining indigenous forest fragments.

Africa, where translation can save lives

Africa, where translation can save lives | Translation for sustainability | Scoop.it
Imagine you are travelling to the other side of world, in a country whose language you don’t speak, nor understand at all. Imagine then that you may need to get medications, or a medical consultation.

How would you do it? What if there were no translators to help you?

Imagine. And think that this is what happens on a daily basis in most African countries. Except that in this case, when it comes to health, who has language problems is, ironically, the local population. But, you know, bad translations of food labels may not be such a big deal, however when it comes to health problems, language barriers may cost lives.

Western countries have done a lot in the past years to help Africa. Hospitals have been built, doctors have been trained, medications have been donated, sent and distributed all over the continent. But, unfortunately, that is still not enough. There is still one more step to take, and that is training translators and interpreters to help patients understand what doctors are telling them, to translate public health leaflets and, above all, to translate the instructions that come with medications.

Just think about the recent Ebola epidemic: aid workers report that people do not have the knowledge they need to cope with this deadly disease, and that happens because most of the communication about Ebola has been made in English, in a continent where only 15 to 20 percent of the people speaks English. Ironic, isn’t it? Not that much, considering that we are talking about thousands of lives that we have lost and we will keep on losing, and it is all because of language barriers and miscommunication. No other recent crisis highlights more poignantly the gap between the languages of aid and the languages of the affected population.

But, as you can figure out, Ebola is just the tip of the iceberg. Truth is that people in Africa die every day because of really “silly” mistakes due to misunderstanding.

What really happens in Africa – tells Mathias Kauke of Translators Without Borders - is that a mom who is having trouble producing milk for her child goes to the hospital, and is given drugs she is supposed to take. But she doesn’t understand that because the prescription is in French. So she thinks it is her baby who is supposed to take them, and that’s what she does. She goes home, she gives those drugs to the child, and then her child dies.

How can we accept that to happen? How can we let that happen? The translation industry must help aid workers be more effective. That is our job. That is our role. Translation does matter. And it can save lives, for real.
