'Writers in Indian languages yet to fully benefit from translation' - The New Indian Express

'Writers in Indian languages yet to fully benefit from translation' - The New Indian Express | Latest news on Translation and Interpreting | Scoop.it

Prabhu Chawla, Editorial Director of The New Indian Express, in a tete-a-tete with Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor during the second Odisha Literary Festival. Excerpts:Prabhu Chawla: You kept us spellbound for 45 minutes during which you discussed not only the biology of literature, but also its geography. You communicate with India in English because you can’t communicate Bharat in English. Jawaharlal Nehru wrote his first book The Discovery of India in English, but did he discover Bharat? When Rahul Gandhi speaks of India and Bharat, obviously he could not understand Bharat from The Discovery of India, which his great grandfather wrote. The question we are raising in the literary festival is that current literature is more influenced by English writers. Is English being imposed? Are we able to create some kind of permanent impact on the way people think about India... or are they just writing their own type. Literature written now is like a Shah Rukh Khan film, which makes `1 crore in three days and in the next three years, nobody remembers that. Is Indian literature drowned by so much noise being made about English literature.

Méteteme: El legado de Miguel Llorens / Miguel Llorens' Legacy | Latest news on Translation and Interpreting | Scoop.it

A year ago I talked about a colleague's death (in Spanish). Today is International Translator's Day. This past weekend, during the Asetrad X conference, I was reminded that a year has already passed and I still have something to share with you.

To avoid that his public contribution to our profession is lost, back in October 2012 I decided to download the content of his two blogs (one mainly in Spanish, the other mainly in English), extract the readable parts (this was done via Readibility's Readlist, I seem to recall), add the comments (manually with Sigil) and correct the formatting that was lost during the second part of the process (Instapaper and Pocket did not do any better).

Defence advocate Ann Ogg argued that the absence of an interpreter for Ms Kapustova made the trial unfair and resulted in a miscarriage of justice.

Although, normally, it was up to the defence to provide an interpreter when needed, courts had the ultimate responsibility for ensuring fairness.

Exploring Curation as a Core Competency in Digital and Media Literacy Education, Journal of Interactive Media in Education, 2013

Exploring Curation as a Core Competency in Digital and Media Literacy Education, Journal of Interactive Media in Education, 2013 | Latest news on Translation and Interpreting | Scoop.it

abstract

"In today's hypermedia landscape, youth and young adults are increasingly using social media platforms, online aggregators and mobile applications for daily information use. Communication educators, armed with a host of free, easy-to-use online tools, have the ability to create dynamic approaches to teaching and learning about information and communication flow online. In this paper we explore the concept of curation as a student- and creation-driven pedagogical tool to enhance digital and media literacy education. We present a theoretical justification for curation and present six key ways that curation can be used to teach about critical thinking, analysis and expression online. We utilize a case study of the digital curation platform "Storify" to explore how curation works in the classroom, and present a framework that integrates curation pedagogy into core media literacy education learning outcomes.
