Permaculture Design Course

Permaculture Design Course | Transition Culture | Scoop.it
Permaculture is a process for designing sustainable communities and is derived from permanent agriculture and permanent culture. Permaculture is a combination of traditional wisdom, modern science and technology and a detailed understanding of natural processes.

Permaculture provides practical solutions to current unsustainable living standards, generating life styles which minimise our impact on the environment.

Permaculture is a design system based on ethics and principles which can be used to establish, design, manage and improve all efforts made by individuals, households and communities towards a sustainable future.

Our first 2012 course has already sold out, but we are now taking enrolments for an extra course, which will commence on Tuesday 7 February 2012

Permaculture Principles | Design Principles | Use edges and value the marginal | Transition Culture | Scoop.it

The landscape catchment feeding a river at sunrise or sunset evokes a world defined by edges. The proverb “don’t think you are on the right track just because its a well-beaten path” reminds us that the most common, obvious and popular is not necessarily the most significant or influential.

Evolving permaculture solutions — keep it simple

Evolving permaculture solutions — keep it simple | Transition Culture | Scoop.it

As declining energy sources become more evident and food emergencies become more commonplace, governments will be looking to universities to find BIG solutions. Along with the hope of BIG solutions comes BIG money.

Permaculture may soon be looked upon as a potential big solution. So as we stand today on the threshold of increasing interest in permaculture, let us take a moment to discuss the potential pitfalls that come with the big money.

Permaculture pioneers — Stories from the new frontier

Permaculture pioneers — Stories from the new frontier | Transition Culture | Scoop.it

In these days of increased concern over food security, resource scarcity and deteriorating ecosystems, the system of design known as permaculture is an important part of finding sustainable solutions.

Permaculture is much more than organic gardening. Some believe it is one of Australia’s greatest intellectual exports, because it has helped many people worldwide to design ecologically sustainable strategies for their homes, gardens, farms and communities.

Science boring? Teach it through Permaculture!

Science boring? Teach it through Permaculture! | Transition Culture | Scoop.it

The profound lack of sustainable systems on our planet is of great concern to environmentalists, some of who are educators and some of who are permaculturists.

Many of the problems facing Earth and its inhabitants are caused by a lack of ecological literacy among much of the human population. Ecological literacy includes an understanding of the scientific principles of ecology, including the recognition of limits and possibilities. It also includes an attitude of care toward the environment and a commitment to act. Finally, it requires the ability to recognize interconnectedness; what some people call systems thinking.

Where does permaculture now sit within Transition?

Where does permaculture now sit within Transition? | Transition Culture | Scoop.it

So the question that the co-ordinators of this splendid social reporting project have asked me to look at here is to explore the links between Transition and permaculture. I guess for me, Transition was, from the beginning, seen as a kind of Trojan Horse. Becoming increasingly frustrated with what I saw as the permaculture movement holding a vitally important tool and set of insights but not seeming to be in any great hurry, either consciously or subconsciously, to share them beyond a small niche of like-minded people (something which is much less the case today but is still observable), I felt the strong need to ramp things up big time. Transition was created, as I say, as a kind of Trojan Horse, into which one could stuff permaculture, the psychology of change, etc. etc, and then manage to simply wheel it into the wider consciousness, sidling it past people who would glance over their shoulders and say “oh, it’s just Transition”. (Rob Hopkins)
