Visioning Sustainability - Scale Independent Thought

Visioning Sustainability - Scale Independent Thought | Transition Culture | Scoop.it

Today’s world of increasing complexity and rapid globalization leaves us thirsting for new metaphors, analogies and emblems – those that can encapsulate the complex challenges we face into an image of clarity we can wrap our minds around. As the stakes of our collective behavior rise, this new image must both shock our sensibilities and inspire us into action. Such a fresh, contemporary archetype must quickly scale visibly into the heart of mass consciousness to encourage humans to become the stewards we were meant to be. To find these new emblems, we can do what the ancients did before us – look to the dynamic processes, natural morphologies and behaviors of our planet to see how she creates dynamic equilibrium in response to upheaval and change.

The Strangest Thing Happened at Cherry Grove | The Simplicity Collective

The Strangest Thing Happened at Cherry Grove | The Simplicity Collective | Transition Culture | Scoop.it

With a day to pass before my students submit their second assignment for marking, this morning I set out on my bike to survey the neighbourhood for a plot of unused land to cultivate, in the manner of a Guerrilla Gardener. I already had my eyes set on a couple spots, so soon enough I found myself hoeing the earth as a soft rain began to fall. It was very pleasant, indeed. ...

#18 reason to donate to Transition Voice: Transition — Transition Voice | Transition Culture | Scoop.it

Transition in general is great. But in our view the Transition movement itself is even greater. People need a values-based (and sometimes a selfish) reason to shift a paradigm. Too see that it’s the right thing to do for other species, our own survival and our kids’ futures; Transition lifestyles are more sustainable, human-scale and help create community; our health and happiness matter, etc. And people also need practical responses that they can apply now without having to reinvent the wheel.

STORY | Tree of Knowledge Memorial | Transition Culture | Scoop.it

... The charred timber box is the outer shell of the Tree of Knowledge memorial, an 18-metre square recycled wood and steel structure which protectively encases the void left by the loss of a heritage-listed ghost gum (Eucalyptus Papuana) due to poisoning in 2006. Believed to have been more than 170 years old, much older than the town itself, it was named in recognition of the stream of events that played out beneath its aged branches. A witness to history – if only that tree could talk. ...

GLT Newsroom: Living "Simple Life" Key to Transition Movement

GLT Newsroom: Living "Simple Life" Key to Transition Movement | Transition Culture | Scoop.it

An advocate of the Transition movement says she thinks Bloomington-Normal is ready to adopt a lifestyle popular two or three generations ago. Ruah Swennerfelt of Charlotte, Vermont comes to the twin cities next week to introduce residents to the community-led response to pressures brought on by climate change, economic contraction and peak oil. Swennerfelt says Transition living relies on practices common in the US fifty to a hundred years ago.
