Making a wood chip mushroom garden

Making a wood chip mushroom garden | Transición | Scoop.it

A mushroom garden is a low cost, DIY way to increase the diversity of your home-grown produce, as well as your overall resilience. It’s also surprisingly simple to do, once you understand the basics of how and why.

pez [estudio]'s curator insight, August 29, 2013 9:11 PM

FreshPaper was created by a young inventor who happened upon the active ingredients after accidentally drinking some tap water while visiting her grandmother in India. Her grandma gave her a home remedy - a mixture of spices, which kept her from getting sick. (Click here to hear the story in her own words.)

After years of research and development, (starting with a middle school science project!), she discovered a new application of her grandmother's generations-old home remedy - a remarkably effective way to keep food fresh!

Fenugreen was founded in 2010. It all startedwith handmade batches of FreshPaper handed out at the farmer's markets and street fairs in Cambridge, MA.

Today, Fenugreen FreshPaper is used by farmers and families across the globe, andFenugreen is establishing initiatives to benefit local food banks in the U.S. and small-scale farmers in the developing world.

Fenugreen is a social enterprise with the mission of “Fresh for All.”

A Small DIY Septic System

A Small DIY Septic System | Transición | Scoop.it

Living off grid often means living in rural areas with little or no utilities available, we are left to fend for ourselves, which is typically the goal anyhow and not a problem. One of the biggest things the rural off gridder needs to take care of is human waste disposal. There are a few options, one is the Joseph Jenkins Humanure method of composting the waste material, that works very well but not everyone is on board for handling their own poo and waste products, and having company over can create its own set of challenges. If you have sufficient water resources, you may want to have a regular flush toilet, something unassuming and un-intimidating for you, your family and friends who may come visit.

Urine Powered Generator

Urine Powered Generator

Via pez [estudio]

pez [estudio]'s curator insight, August 28, 2013 12:57 AM

Four young Nigerian girls have invented a generator that runs on urine.

The invention was first displayed in Lagos, November, 2012, at the 4th annual Maker Faire, a pan-African innovation fair. Three 14-year-olds, Duro-Aina Adebola, Akindele Abiola, Faleke Oluwatoyin and 15-year-old Bello Eniola are the inventors.

The system separates urine into nitrogen, water and hydrogen.
Urine is put into an electrolytic cell, which separates out the hydrogen.
The hydrogen goes into a water filter for purification, which then gets pushed into the gas cylinder.
The gas cylinder pushes hydrogen into a cylinder of liquid borax, which is used to remove the moisture from the hydrogen gas.
This purified hydrogen gas is pushed into the generator.
The girls say that one liter of urine gives six hours of electricity. But they do not specify exactly how much electricity is produced; enough to run a 60 watt light bulb, or a fridge and computer for six hours? We excitedly await more news...

Throughout the mechanism there are one-way valves for safety. Without the safety valves, this generator could be explosive, as hydrogen is flammable. ;-[

‘Me sumo y no consumo’.
