In June of 1971, just days before his 26-year-old son, Michael, got married, future-U.S. President Ronald Reagan sent him the following letter of advice. It really is quite stunning.

Side by Side is a remarkable free app. With Side by Side, you can split the iPad screen into as many as four windows that can be positioned and sized as needed. These windows can be used to view multiple websites, PDF’s or MS Word files. Or, any of the windows may be used for note-taking text editors. Text can be copied into a text editor from other open windows. Text-to-speech is available in any of the windows via Speak Selection.

For a while now, we've heard how anyone who doesn't know how to code will be resigned to a life of servitude in the technological underclass. Writer, developer, and Stack Overflow kingpin Jeff Atwood disagrees.

SCOTS school children should be given high tech tablet computers to ensure poor students aren’t left behind. ScotlandIS, the trade body for the IT industry, believes a “digital divide” is opening up between children from different financial backgrounds.

Sadly, we still see countless negative examples: Schools that failed to examine the culture before initiating change, schools that changed one dimension of the school without considering the implications on other dimensions, and schools whose leaders went about change alone.

So what's the point in the traditional ICT staff audit? Do we really care if the HOD of Art is competent in databases? Or is her use of blogs, apps and smartphones a more relevant skillset for 2012? If you see the future of ICT in terms of mobile devices connected to the cloud and used in collaboration, what are the skills a teacher really needs?

In 2007, when the iPhone made its debut, there was little doubt that it would revolutionize the mobile phone industry. But at the time, few imagined that it would spawn a multibillion-dollar market for mobile applications, and fewer imagined that this market might become a significant one for children.
