Dr Alec Couros (University of Regina) shares some of the best examples of student work from the ECMP 355 (Technology in Education) undergraduate course he teaches. Each example reflects the student's final course PROJECT, the goals of which varied from either "Build a Learning Resource" or "Learn something new using the Internet" type.

 

A range of different types of PORTFOLIOS of LEARNING are shared in this post and are well worth exploring as they beautifully illustrate the creative and personal ways in which the students demonstrated their learning of the course.

 

These include "Summaries of Learning" in a variety of formats:

*Series of blog posts 

*Screencasts

*Videos and vlogs

*Blogfolios

*Animations

* Wikis

 

The design of this learning activity allowed for personalisation in format choice and made provision for the students to progessively document their learning over the duration of the course, as far as I can ascertain. I would be interested to understand what his exact brief was to the students and what rubric(s) he used to assess these projects, if at all. 

 

PS I had a conversation  with @courosa yesterday on Twitter to explore his approach to assessing his students' "Portfolios of Learning". His response was interesting:

"Assessment was customised to each student based on some general indicators (e.g., quality of artifact) with bulk focused on growth. I tend not to use rubrics and try to keep assessment consultative & personlised. Takes more time, but I think it's more accurate."

Diana Laurillard is Professor of Learning with Digital Technologies at the London Knowledge Lab, Institute of Education, leading current research on developing a learning design support environment for teachers, and software for learners with low numeracy. Her new book "Teaching as Design Science: Building Pedagogical Patterns for Learning and Technology" was recently published. (16 March 2012, Routledge) and looks promising (I have yet to read it so this is not a book review).

 

A description and overview of the contents have grabbed my attention.

A set of generic/reusable learning design resources to assist university teachers to create high quality, flexible learning experiences for students.

Use the website resources (exemplars, guides and tools) to develop high quality learning experiences for students.

 

This project was commissioned back in 2000 by the Australian Universities Teaching Committee (AUTC) and focused on how ICT can be used to design flexible learning opportunities for students. The learning designs are reusable and informed by the Boud and Prosser principles for high quality student learning in Higher Education (Boud & Prosser, 2001, 2002).

 

Learning Design types/foci include:

 

1. PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING focus: The emphasis of the learning  design is on the process of students solving a real world problem presented to them.

 

2. PROJECT/CASE STUDY focus: The emphasis of the learning design is to create a product or artefact. The "learning by doing" process may be supported by case materials  from which the learner can distil/abstract lessons learnt to apply in a new project situation.

 

3. ROLE-PLAY focus: The emphasis of the learning design is subrogation: "walking in the shoes of others".

 

4. COLLABORATIVE focus: The emphasis of the learning design is interacting and collaborating with peers to facilitate construction of knowledge.

 

5. CONCEPT/PROCEDURE DEVELOPMENT focus: The emphasis of the learning design is to understand and/or consolidate student learning about concepts and/or procedures.

This presentation details six highly creative and technology based ways that teachers could incorporate design into their classroom, and use it for assessment. The ideas are as follows: flipbooks, mindmaps, photoquotes, infographics, flashcards and social bookmarking. I like this article a great deal because it in itself is a great example of using technology to design a visually appealing presentation that presents information in a more creative and user-friendly way. The Twitter Essay.....A Tweet as "writerly concision" <---LOVE THIS!

 

To quote @Jessifer: "I’ve recently experimented in my composition classes with an assignment I call the Twitter-essay, in which students condense an argument with evidential support into 140 characters, which they unleash upon a hashtag (or trending topic) in the Twitter-verse. Tweets often attempt to convey as much information in as few words as possible. A tweet could be seen, then, not as a paragon of the many potential horrors of student writing, but as a model of writerly concision. In composing their Twitter-essay, I have students proceed through all the steps I would have them take in writing a traditional academic essay, including brainstorming, composing, workshopping, and revising. I also have them consider and research their audience, the Twitter members engaged in discussion around a particular hashtag. Finally, I have them work dynamically with the Tweets of their peers, responding to them on Twitter and close-analyzing them in class. I ask the students to consider their word-choice, use of abbreviation, punctuation, etc. To model the activity for them and to give them a sense for the shape of a Twitter-essay, I compose my instructions for the assignment in exactly 140 characters and post them to Twitter."

A very interesting discussion facilitated by Dr Tony Bates who argues that hybrid learning is probably the most significant development in e-learning and teaching in general. He explores why this is happening and takes a look at current hybrid models and then poses some really key questions to stimulate discussion. "What should be done in face-to-face class, and what should be done online? What is the university offering these students on campus that they couldn’t get from studying online? And what models or design principles can guide us in answering those questions? What should the instructional design strategy be for hybrid courses?‘’

According to Tony, very little on the comparative "affordances" of face-to-face vs online learning exists in current literature.. Will be interesting to follow the development of this discussion and any further research on this that becomes available.

Questions of my own: "What principles guide the shift from 100% face-to-face teaching to a blended learning model? In a 3 year undergraduate degree that is historically delivered through an on campus face-to-face model, where does one start to create a blended model - a % within each module or a % of modules across the 3 years or both?"

Very interesting piece. I think the use of tablets will be the critical factor. I asked a group of 20 graduates I was working with who had a tablet. The answer was NONE amazingly. That won't be the case in 2 years time.

"We have heard the complaint or issued it ourselves one too many times: “They don’t read!”

 

But can Digital Media provide some simple pedagogical models to promote a more active engagement with that most ancient and passive form of learning: the reading assignment? In this article, I describe the use of Wikis (web pages that people can easily edit as a group) to get students to summarize, ask questions, and comment on a reading before they even meet for class. And while many new—and old—tools can be used to accomplish similar results, what is innovative about this approach is that whereas before reading and writing was something students were supposed to do individually in the isolation of their rooms or the library, now—thanks to Wikis—it is a project they tackle collaboratively as a class. The goals of this critical pedagogy are thus both modest and radical, at the intersection of old and new technologies: to use Digital Media to change the way students interact with texts."

 

Assignment provided and reflection on it's impact on student learning. A really worthwhile read!

This has been on my mind a lot lately. It frustrates me that so many teachers are ready to gather around Wikipedia like a pinata and beat it down. It is still sooooooo young. It can become something really special if we nurture it and encourage wise use. For example, the most powerful part is not the front page but by going under the hood and looking at the discussions about what should be on the front page. Helping our students find those discussions is so important. Ken
