The Major Disadvantage Plaguing the Smallest Businesses

The Major Disadvantage Plaguing the Smallest Businesses | Transformations in Business & Law | Scoop.it

The smallest of businesses have a harder time being approved for loans than their larger counterparts, a recent survey says.

According to the survey, released Thursday by four regional Federal Reserve Banks, 52 percent of businesses with revenue under $250,000 a year said they were rejected for a loan during the first half of 2014. Half of businesses with revenue between $250,000 and $1 million also couldn't get a loan.

Bigger companies fared better. Loans were approved for 80 percent of businesses that made $10 million or more and 78 percent of businesses that made between $1 million and $10 million.

The next groundbreaking mobile device: your car

The next groundbreaking mobile device: your car | Transformations in Business & Law | Scoop.it

The stage is finally set for an explosion of new connectivity in vehicles, which is why a record 10 automakers will be showing off their wares at CES this week, with the CEOs of Mercedes-Benz and Ford (F) giving keynote speeches touting their offerings. And while the press at CES is likely to focus on futuristic eventualities such as self-driving cars that can drop you off at the mall and park themselves, many useful (and some pointless) digital features are showing up on new cars today, forcing car buyers to decide just how connected they want to be on the road.

Knee Meniscus Regenerated with 3D-Printed Implant - About Health Degrees | Transformations in Business & Law | Scoop.it

Columbia University Medical Center researchers have devised a way to replace the knee’s protective lining, called the meniscus, using a personalized 3D-printed implant, or scaffold, infused with human growth factors that prompt the body to regenerate the lining on its own. The therapy, successfully tested in sheep, could provide the first effective and long-lasting repair of damaged menisci, which occur in millions of Americans each year and can lead to debilitating arthritis.

7 Data Points Proving What Works on Instagram

7 Data Points Proving What Works on Instagram | Transformations in Business & Law | Scoop.it
Instagram is the perfect platform for brand engagement. Want to get the most out of your efforts? Take a look at this data!

Simply Measured shared a study that featured some great data points to help marketers make the most of their Instagram efforts.  Let’s take a look at the data and the insights of this illuminating study.

The Insights

Instagram is not a set it and forget it type of social network. Marketers need to consistently post photos and videos to Instagram to see any impact. It would be ideal to try to set a loose content calendar to organize your efforts and keep a consistent frequency of posting.Content lasts a few days on Instagram. Keep tabs on how long your content continues to receive engagement to determine what your minimum posting frequency should be.Provide captions but don’t go crazy on the length of text. Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words. If your post involves another user be sure to mention them in the caption and tag them in the image if necessary. Be sure to spread the love!Hashtags help your content get discovered. Be sure to use them!Make sure you use location tags when appropriate. This is especially important if you are a hotel, restaurant or any other brick and mortar business.Don’t forget that Instagram and Twitter make an incredible 1-2 punch for distributing your content!

What I Learned From Building An App For Low-Income Americans - Masters and PhDs

What I Learned From Building An App For Low-Income Americans - Masters and PhDs | Transformations in Business & Law | Scoop.it

The brief was simple: build a tech product for low-income American households. It wasn’t simple at all.

Living on a low income translates into other forms of scarcity: of power, information, respect, opportunity, time, health, security, and even of sleep. Our job was to build a piece of technology which could increase our users’ stock of at least one of those resources.

App Usage is Growing Faster than Mobile - Sparkroom

App Usage is Growing Faster than Mobile - Sparkroom | Transformations in Business & Law | Scoop.it

I couldn’t help being amused by some of diners sitting in a beachside restaurant in Barbados last week. We had the most glorious view of the setting sun across the Caribbean Sea as the waves lapped gently on beach – and yet my fellow diners had their eyes and thumbs locked to their mobile phones.

A quick look around any public space suggests that people spend an awful lot of time on mobile devices. In fact, the average American spends almost 3 hours a day.

Approach Content Marketing Like a CRO (Here`s How)

Approach Content Marketing Like a CRO (Here`s How) | Transformations in Business & Law | Scoop.it
The biggest problem with content marketing today is that we downplay its importance. We take things for granted and presume readers will automatically like our articles.

But, more often than not, we don’t write content with the reader in mind. For the professional writer you hire, it could just be a means to an end, i.e., a paycheck. When that’s the case, the core content marketing mantras, things like “this piece of content should address a problem or help the reader out,” seem to fly out the proverbial window.

Articles are mostly used as filler and that’s the reason the ROI of content marketing is often much less than expected.

Want a solid ROI for your content marketing efforts and ultimately be able to use your content to improve your conversion rates?

In this article, I will be talking about what needs to change for that to happen and how to effect those changes.

A Dangerous Question: Does Internet Advertising Work at All? - Masters and PhDs

A Dangerous Question: Does Internet Advertising Work at All? - Masters and PhDs | Transformations in Business & Law | Scoop.it

In a study of search ads bought by eBay, the most frequent Internet users—who see the vast majority of ads; and spend the most money online—weren’t any more likely to buy stuff from eBay after seeing search ads. The study concluded that paid-search spending was ironically concentrated on the very people who were going to buy stuff on eBay, anyway. “More frequent users whose purchasing behavior is not influenced by ads account for most of the advertising expenses, resulting in average returns that are negative,” the researchers concluded.

Electric vehicles will not be competitive with those fueled by petroleum derivatives unless there are more charging stations, deeper capacity battteries, and range comparable to conventionally-powered cars.  Battery research may eventually close the gap.  Why hasn't any car manufacturer put solar panels in the roofs of these cars?  Those panels could keep a trickle charge on the batteries, allowing them to be fully charged  at the end of the day and to perhaps a bit more range.  Aloha, Russ.

Tech’s push to “disrupt” workers is a legal & social timebomb - Masters and PhDs | Transformations in Business & Law | Scoop.it

The maid-on-demand service Handy, is one of the increasing list of companies that are re-classifying their workers as contractors, and hence saving many of the costs associated with having employees.

Jeff Roberts, Staff Writer for Gigaom:

Transforming toilet cleaners into contractors is one example of how the tech industry is shaking up the labor market. But more broadly, Handy’s unusual arrangement also embodies a Silicon Valley ethos that tech boosters like to call “disruption,” and that detractors call “regulatory arbitrage.”

As Robots Grow Smarter, American Workers Struggle to Keep Up - Masters and PhDs

As Robots Grow Smarter, American Workers Struggle to Keep Up - Masters and PhDs | Transformations in Business & Law | Scoop.it

A machine that administers sedatives recently began treating patients at a Seattle hospital. At a Silicon Valley hotel, a bellhop robot delivers items to people’s rooms. Last spring, a software algorithm wrote a breaking news article about an earthquake that The Los Angeles Times published.

Although fears that technology will displace jobs are at least as old as the Luddites, there are signs that this time may really be different. The technological breakthroughs of recent years — allowing machines to mimic the human mind — are enabling machines to do knowledge jobs and service jobs, in addition to factory and clerical work.
