Lateral Thinking - How can Lateral Thinking help you? | #Creativity #ProblemSolving

Lateral Thinking - How can Lateral Thinking help you? | #Creativity #ProblemSolving | Transformations in Business & Tourism | Scoop.it
With logic you start out with certain ingredients just as in playing chess you start out with given pieces. But what are those pieces? In most real life situations the pieces are not given, we just assume they are there. We assume certain perceptions, certain concepts and certain boundaries. Lateral thinking is concerned not with playing with the existing pieces but with seeking to change those very pieces. Lateral thinking is concerned with the perception part of thinking. This is where we organise the external world into the pieces we can then 'process'.

A healthy human brain does not want to always be creative, it is designed to figure out how to do things or how to think about things and then 'locks' that automatic response or behaviour into a subconscious process so that your conscious brain can focus on other matters.

Kids Who Do Chores Are More Successful Adults

Want your kids to grow up to be successful? Make them do chores. When they balk (and trust me: they will probably balk), you can tell them that scientific research supports you.

It sounds great, and it's true--but there is a catch. (We'll get to that in a minute.) For now, the science.

In the Harvard Grant Study, the longest running longitudinal study in history, (spanning 75 years and counting--from 1938 to the present), researchers identified two things that people need in order to be happy and successful:

The first? Love.

The second? Work ethic.

And what's the best way to develop work ethic in young people? Based on the experiences of the 724 high-achievers who were part of the study (including people like future-President Kennedy and Ben Bradlee, the Watergate-era editor of The Washington Post) there's a consensus.

rodrick rajive lal's curator insight, April 10, 12:21 AM
Encouraging kids to do chores will empower them for life as successful adults. We tend to pamper children, when we discouraged them from making an odd cup of tea, or perhaps empty their plates into the garbage can before placing them in the sink. Teaching children to wash their plates, lay the table, or even dust or tidy their rooms will go a long way in making them successful adults!

Emotional Intelligence Myth vs. Fact

Emotional Intelligence Myth vs. Fact | Transformations in Business & Tourism | Scoop.it
Is Emotional Intelligence the same as being “nice” or “polite”?

Does Emotional Intelligence just mean you have a lot of empathy?

Is Emotional Intelligence only for women or men who want to “get in touch with their sensitive side”?

After 20+ years of writing and speaking about the science behind Emotional Intelligence and its importance in work settings, I still come across people who believe one or more of these myths about EI. The author of a recent article in Scientific American fell into the “EI is just about empathy” trap. And an article in Harvard Business Review equated being nice with Emotional Intelligence. The assumption that Emotional Intelligence is related to a man’s “inner female” was raised in a comment to one of my posts about the Emotional Self-Awareness competency.

Each of these exemplify misleading stereotypes about Emotional Intelligence. And they equate one narrow slice of these abilities with the whole. But Emotional Intelligence is much more than just being empathic or nice.

we’ve heard from many teachers that Book Creator is a great app for ‘app smashing’. Because you can pull in content from other apps so easily, it’s often the last step in the workflow – where students collate all their content from other apps into one place, to showcase their work. So we thought we’d delve a little deeper to find out which apps were the top choice at the moment when it comes to working with Book Creator. We asked our Book Creator Ambassadors to give us their top 5 choices for apps they love to use in conjunction with Book Creator. We then rated their choices (5 points for no.1, 4 points for no.2 etc.) and came up with the list below. These 11 were the only apps that scored double figures. Do you agree with the list?

10 Apps for Writing and Collaboration

10 Apps for Writing and Collaboration | Transformations in Business & Tourism | Scoop.it
Over the last few days, I’ve tried out dozens of writing platforms, cloud-based and locally installed. I’ve downloaded apps to my devices, played with features, wondered at how each tool might change the how of my work and also the shape of the work itself.

I found a handful of tools I’m going to recommend here. Most work well for collaboration. Not all of them allow for the kind of dynamic synchronous writing sessions that Google Docs enables. What I found is that testing tools and thinking through their features forced me to ask questions about how I do the work of writing and how (and where) I want to do that work going forward. These are in no particular order. (Except you can skip to the end if you want to see the tool I’m using to write this post.)

The future of your organization is in its Culture of Learning

The future of your organization is in its Culture of Learning | Transformations in Business & Tourism | Scoop.it

Managers, leaders, and employees are all a part of that culture. But as a member of a team, you know what’s happening better than anyone. So, what can you do with all the information you have? What can you do to help your company continue into the foreseeable future? One part of the answer, if not the main part, is the culture of learning in the organization.

Learning is everywhere. I learn everyday in my job and I think most other people do as well. We all have to learn somehow or our jobs become boring, or even worse, we don’t do them very well anymore.

So, as a member of a team with a strong learning culture, what can you do to help yourself and others learn more effectively? How can you help your company create a strong and better culture of learning? More importantly, how do you harness that learning power and help it propel you into the future? Again, those precogs. It’s just between you and me. There have to be answers somewhere!

How to Save (and Share) Everything You Learn With These 11 Apps

How to Save (and Share) Everything You Learn With These 11 Apps | Transformations in Business & Tourism | Scoop.it

"Picture your brain. It’s like a bucket.

But a bucket with a leaky hole. Our brains are designed to be flytraps for new information and knowledge, but evolution put in a deliberate “flaw”. It’s easy to learn new things. But it is just as difficult to remember and hold on to new knowledge without effort.

So before you wade into the tides of information out there, arm yourself with a system to keep the knowledge and also share it around. Sharing new insights is one way to remember what you learn. It also pays off with better interpersonal productivity and collaboration. .

Plus, let’s face it: sometimes it’s easier to get your point across by letting someone or something else do the talking. Learn… share… and make sure you learn something from everybody in your life.

Here are 11 helpful apps and services you can use now to save and share the favorite bits of knowledge you come across every day."

I selected this article from Curatti written by Susan Gilbert because it provides information on how to build your visibility with a well crafted press release.

Promoting your business online takes many channels and methods, including press releases.

Understand How to Create a Winning Press Release

As a business recognition is like gold when it comes to building an audience. I agree that publishing a news announcement can enhance your brand promotion efforts.

Gilbert goes over how to successfully write and publish a press release that gets noticed.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • Before writing decide what the focus or subject matter will be. This could be a product announcement, event, contest, ect.

  • Craft a headline that is eye-catching and newsworthy. Come up with several different ideas to choose from before making a final selection.

  • The introduction is the most important part of your press release. It should explain who, what when, where, and why along with a summary of what the article is about.

I selected this article from Curatti written by Susan Gilbert because it helps you improve your visual marketing with shareable infographics.

Visual graphics can be both fun and informative for your niche audience.

Create Infographics That Grow Your Following Online

People are drawn to appealing content that grabs their attention right away. I agree that infographics can help attract more subscribers and followers.

Gilbert shows you how to create graphics that audiences are more willing to share.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • Find out what is on the minds of your target market the most before designing your infographic. Make sure the content is both timely and relevant.

  • Focus on a specific group inside your niche and appeal to their pressing problems and needs. Make good on what your title promises to them.

  • If you have a study or a lot of data put it into a fun infographic. This is a great way to turn boring content into something interesting.
