10 Steps To Effective Listening

10 Steps To Effective Listening | Transformación y Cambio de Creencias | Scoop.it

In today’s high-tech, high-speed, high-stress world, communication is more important then ever, yet we seem to devote less and less time to really listening to one another. Genuine listening has become a rare gift—the gift of time. It helps build relationships, solve problems, ensure understanding, resolve conflicts, and improve accuracy. At work, effective listening means fewer errors and less wasted time. At home, it helps develop resourceful, self-reliant kids who can solve their own problems. Listening builds friendships and careers. It saves money and marriages.

  1. Face the speaker and maintain eye contact.
  2. Be attentive, but relaxed.
  3. Keep an open mind.
  4. Listen to the words and try to picture what the speaker is saying.
  5. Don’t interrupt and don’t impose your “solutions.
  6. Wait for the speaker to pause to ask clarifying questions.
  7. Ask questions only to ensure understanding.
  8. Try to feel what the speaker is feeling.
  9. Give the speaker regular feedback.
  10. Pay attention to what isn’t said—to nonverbal cues.

Radical Change: Engaging Communities

Radical Change: Engaging Communities | Transformación y Cambio de Creencias | Scoop.it
It doesn't have to be 'them and us'. With the right type of engagement, it can be 'us' all around. I'm seeing increased interest in the power of socially moderated and driven change models:

Great scoop here via @CelineSchill.

I really agree with this statement:

Momentum is one of the hardest aspects of change: you can easily create disturbance, but like ripples on the water, it soon fades away. True change requires momentum over time, and that can only be generated from within the community, not input from outside.

It's socially created and socially moderated, so almost by definition, it requires engagement from the community.

Really identify with #5:

Develop the squeezed middle: Once a business grows and a middle management tier emerges, these are the people who can make or break growth. They are submerged by the instructions from above and the demands from below and unless their skills are developed, the culture is collaborative and the direction clear, they will drown. Identifying the skill and personal development needs of these individuals to help them become future leaders can catapult your capacity to a new level.
