Linda Alexander's curator insight, November 20, 2013 11:30 AM

I love this post and its 21st Century implications.  Yes, the old wooded or even newer plastic, solo student desks are becoming a relic of the past.  With collaborative learning environments, mobile learning, project based learning, etc. those neat little rows of desks lined up in single file are a thing of the past.  However, if you're stumped on a practical alternative, I remain a fan of the harkness table that has a long, successful independent school history.  Here is a link if you're not familiar with the harkness table:

Sure thing, Fishtree. These soft skills make all of the difference between success and failure. Once basic competence is achieved, then these skills determine one's fate.

Totally agree, Chris. We often talk about digital literacy and forget what's more important. This article is a great reminder! Thanks for sharing it.

Terrific article that clearly summarises the challenges and opportunities in helping to better prepare young people  ie "without better curriculum, better teaching, and better tests, the emphasis on 21st century skills will be a superficial one that will sacrifice long-term gains for the appearance of short-term progress."

Sure thing, Dean! My daughter's 4th grade experience taught he so many foundational concepts. Additionally, she learned that it is not enough to be compassionate. One must act. That is a paraphrase from the Dali Lama or the Book of James, which ever way you roll. She and her classmates participated in producing a good, form concept to sales, and donated the revenue to local charities.

An interesting article explaining the benefits of using tablets. I find it is still very effective to get kids to WRITE on paper and ACCESS content using their device. It helps them remember and keeps their recording skills - some of the weaker students lose their train of thought in the switch between apps on the iPad.
