Defining Impact in Education Technology

Defining Impact in Education Technology | Transformational Teaching and Technology | Scoop.it
“I have trouble understanding double, triple bottom line funds – there can only be one bottom line for impact funds. That’s why they call it the bottom.”  - a paraphrase of Kevin StarrI am thrilled...
Chris Carter's insight:

A thorny challenge.

"There is a complexity buried in here that money misses. A true capitalist might say that if you are able to make sales and scale revenue this is a sign the product is good and the market needs what you sell. But in education I believe it is the responsibility of an investor to look beyond the financial opportunity and into the impact, however ambiguous and (un)measurable it might be."

7 Things Effective Principals Do Differently

Ian Lancaster talks about the 7 habits of highly effective principals in this updated article originally featured on TeachThought.
Chris Carter's insight:
Having served along-side excellent principals, I do agree with the list. Some items are not obvious or intuitive, yet are essential:
1. Balance management and leadership.
2. Envision what’s ideal but focus on what’s doable.
3. Represent the missing voice.
4. Listen and interpret.
5. Practice consistent reflection.
- Too easily overlooked, but essential for all lifelong learners!
6. Plan for their absence.
- The second not-so-obvious trait is this one. In the military the rule is to make yourself redundant.
7. Make student learning the highest priority.

Opinion: Forget “digital natives.” Here’s how kids are really using the Internet

Opinion: Forget “digital natives.” Here’s how kids are really using the Internet | Transformational Teaching and Technology | Scoop.it
By challenging the assumption that every child growing up today is a one-size-fits all digital native, we can make sure each of them can find their own way to relate to technology — whether using it to accomplish basic tasks or to create new technologies and worlds. Being aware of our kids’ differences now is what could help keep them from drifting apart.

Chris Carter's comment, July 5, 9:37 PM
A much more nuanced view, and one that I appreciate. I have long called so-called digital natives "digital naives" because the majority of kids only know enough about tech to use it to accomplish what they wish to accomplish. Tech does not really come any easier for them. Tech is simply more common to them.
