Any system of note taking (digital or otherwise) helps students master cognitively demanding tasks if it provides support and helps them save, search, and share.
Chris Carter's insight:

Thank you, Beth Holland! You have cut through the smoke and noise to get to the heart of the issue.

" ... does the system [that you are using]

Adequately support the students' learning needs?

Allow students to save their notes to multiple locations?
Let students search for salient points?
Permit students to share with peers and teachers?"

Boom!

Online Learning Must Be Collaborative and Social

Online Learning Must Be Collaborative and Social | Transformational Teaching, Thinking, and Technology | Scoop.it

Chris Carter's insight:

We've podcasted, written, and spoken concerning this very thing. All effective teaching is, at its heart, relational in nature. We learn from, with, and through other people. We are social creatures. We are at our best when we recognize that we are responsible to a community. As my professional development dictates that I move into the fully online realm of academic instruction I, too, wrestle with the essential element of human interaction.

ClassDojo Adopts Deletion Policy for Student Data

ClassDojo Adopts Deletion Policy for Student Data | Transformational Teaching, Thinking, and Technology | Scoop.it
The maker of ClassDojo, a popular classroom app, said that starting in January it plans to keep students’ behavioral records for only one school year.
Chris Carter's insight:

Now, that was fast! Imagine if we, the public, communicated with other corporations that are currently making boat loads of money by selling our data that we do not wish them to do so, and we will take our business elsewhere if they continue the practice. I wonder how long it would be before companies start green listing themselves as companies that do not sell or transmit customer data to third parties? I wonder what would happen if a rating service designed to evaluate  companies based upon the companies' practices of selling user data was to become popular? I wonder how much power we, the consumers who fund these companies, actually have?

Privacy Concerns for ClassDojo and Other Tracking Apps for Schoolchildren

Privacy Concerns for ClassDojo and Other Tracking Apps for Schoolchildren | Transformational Teaching, Thinking, and Technology | Scoop.it
Many teachers say the ClassDojo app helps them record classroom conduct, but critics are wary of such apps’ ramifications for data privacy and fairness.
Chris Carter's insight:

This opinion is definitely my own, and does not necessarily represent the views of my employer, colleagues, family, pet cat, or my long lost teddy bear "Snuppy"

I am asking for the beginning of the great privacy discussion that needs to take place across the country, and across the planet. Not that I believe for a moment that any government is going to voluntarily restrict its own data collection efforts, nor effectively monitor itself for compliance concerning any regulations imposed upon them. I wish for everyone impacted by governments' choices to systematically collect every piece of information they can on individuals who have violated no laws, are not suspected of violating laws, and are not believed to be preparing to violate laws, to make their resistance to the destruction of the private sphere clear.

Chris Carter's comment, November 18, 8:18 PM
Dean, you are welcome. I know that we, as members of a modern society, cannot sageguard our privacy against invasive government and businesses, but we must make our opposition to such intrusion clear.

Automatically Generate Infographic Reports From Spreadsheet Data | Google Gooru | Transformational Teaching, Thinking, and Technology | Scoop.it

Most business people assume that the primary attractor to Google Docs is its near-free price. Many like the fact that it’s a fully cloud-centric collaborative environment. However, the promise of lower cost and better accessibility by teams is just a small part of the growing desire for businesses to escape from Microsoft Office.

One key incentive for adopting this platform is its capacity for scripting automation services. Taking this to a higher level, dashOne demonstrates how to automatically generate HTML infographic-style reports from spreadsheet data.
