Teaching Why Facts Still Matter

Teaching Why Facts Still Matter | Transformational Teaching and Technology | Scoop.it
An unavoidable challenge arises when students realize that no matter how many facts support a certain conclusion, denial and dissent remain. Recently, for example, my government class discussed how, faced with a mountain of scientific data, anybody—including politicians—would refute global warming, or the role that humanity plays in its occurrence. Unfortunately, this kind of discussion leads to students’ doubting the power of truth to influence and inform wise decisions, which in turn makes them question the purpose of working hard to learn at all.

The New York Public Library just released a treasure trove of digitized public domain images, everything from epic poetry from the 11th century to photographs of used car lots in Columbus, Ohio from the 1930s. Over 180,000 manuscripts, maps, photographs, sheet music, lithographs, postcards, and other images were released online Wednesday in incredibly high resolution, and are available to download using the library's user-friendly visualization tool. I especially appreciate #2. Society appears to hold the view that teachers should withdraw from some unlimited bank of resources, skill, and knowledge. Teachers must model effective learning throughout our careers if we are to be role-models, by definition.
1. Developing and sharing a vision centered on the learning of all students.
2. Creating and supporting continuous learning opportunities for all staff.

How Does the Brain Learn Best? Smart Studying Strategies | #Research

How Does the Brain Learn Best? Smart Studying Strategies | #Research | Transformational Teaching and Technology | Scoop.it

— Breaking up and spacing out study time over days or weeks can substantially boost how much of the material students retain, and for longer, compared to lumping everything into a single, nose-to-the-grindstone session.

— Varying the studying environment — by hitting the books in, say, a cafe or garden rather than only hunkering down in the library, or even by listening to different background music — can help reinforce and sharpen the memory of what you learn.

— A 15-minute break to go for a walk or trawl on social media isn’t necessarily wasteful procrastination. Distractions and interruptions can allow for mental “incubation” and flashes of insight — but only if you’ve been working at a problem for a while and get stuck, according to a 2009 research meta-analysis.

— Quizzing oneself on new material, such as by reciting it aloud from memory or trying to tell a friend about it, is a far more powerful way to master information than just re-reading it, according to work by researchers including Henry Roediger III and Jeffrey Karpicke. (Roediger has co-authored his own book, “Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning.”)

Interactive Storytelling and Coding

Interactive Storytelling and Coding | Transformational Teaching and Technology | Scoop.it
Knowing that coding is an important skill for students to learn, I knew I had to come up with ways to teach coding skills. However, I knew nothing about coding, so I needed to learn a few basics. With my new found knowledge, I came up with so many fun ideas for integrating coding into my literacy lessons. Which is why I am so happy I get to share one of the first ever coding lessons I incorporated into the literacy curriculum AND it is just in time for the Mentor Text Lessons to Warm Up Your Winter Link-Up using the book Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner.

Transcend the Classroom with Virtual Place-Based Learning

Transcend the Classroom with Virtual Place-Based Learning | Transformational Teaching and Technology | Scoop.it
Simulation-based learning allows us to play in a highly immersive environment that reflects aspects of the real world. In virtual simulations, we can explore and create with much lower stakes than we would encounter in the real world. Questions of “What if?” flourish in a virtual simulation as we create and experience new possibilities with increasing realism. With smartphones making access to virtual reality easier and easier, virtual simulations can now become part of place-based learning in the classroom.
