how emotions help you learn

how emotions help you learn | Transformational Teaching, Thinking, and Technology | Scoop.it

Human tutors—teachers who work closely with students, one on one—are unrivaled in their ability to promote deep and lasting learning. Education researchers have known this for more than 30 years, but until recently they haven’t paid much attention to one important reason why tutoring is so effective: the management of emotion. Studies show that tutors spend about half their time dealing with pupils’ feelings about what and how they’re learning.

Now the designers of computerized tutoring systems are beginning to make sensing and responding to emotions a key part of the process, and they’re finding that users learn more as a result. At the same time, researchers are using the data generated by these programs to make new discoveries about emotion and its central role in learning.

Chris Carter's insight:

MOOCs are beginning to figure out why they are failing, and how to solve the issue. All good teaching is relational.

A 3D Printed Microscope for Your iPhone for Pennies - The Mac Observer

A 3D Printed Microscope for Your iPhone for Pennies - The Mac Observer | Transformational Teaching, Thinking, and Technology | Scoop.it
Scientists at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, Washington have developed a 3D printed microscope housing for various mobile devices that costs pennies. Combined with an easily available glass bead, the device can offer up to 1,000x magnification. The result is a cheap, digital microscope that can be used in the field to photograph and transmit images of biological samples and get results in minutes. If contaminated, the device is so cheap, it can be thrown away and a new one substituted.

To hear some ed tech enthusiasts tell it, online learning is sweeping aside the barriers that have in the past prevented access to education. But such pronouncements are premature. As it turns out, students often carry these barriers right along with them, from the real world into the virtual one.

100 Leaders

100 Leaders | Transformational Teaching, Thinking, and Technology | Scoop.it

Our world is full of individuals who have risen to the occasions presented before them to provide guidance and direction to inspire others to follow. By uncovering the past, we find heroes and role models and are motivated to do as those who came before them — to become involved, to participate, to take a stand for what we believe in and to take action to improve their communities, country and even the world.

Studying leaders in history exposes us to what happens when leadership goes awry and allows us to examine the consequences that might start locally but reverberate globally. This is why we chose to refer to these leaders as significant, rather than great. Great leaders have a positive connotation to them. By focusing on significant leaders, we can consider the full spectrum of leadership, with all of its positive and negative implications. This gives us a more nuanced view.

Chris Carter's insight:

A must-see for all HS History teachers!

The Learning Myth: Why I'll Never Tell My Son He's Smart

The Learning Myth: Why I'll Never Tell My Son He's Smart | Transformational Teaching, Thinking, and Technology | Scoop.it

My 5-year-old son has just started reading. Every night, we lie on his bed and he reads a short book to me. Inevitably, he’ll hit a word that he has trouble with: last night the word was “gratefully.” He eventually got it after a fairly painful minute. He then said, “Dad, aren’t you glad how I struggled with that word? I think I could feel my brain growing.” I smiled: my son was now verbalizing the tell-tale signs of a “growth mindset.” But this wasn’t by accident. Recently, I put into practice research I had been reading about for the past few years: I decided to praise my son not when he succeeded at things he was already good at, but when he persevered with things that he found difficult. I stressed to him that by struggling, your brain grows. Between the deep body of research on the field of learning mindsets and this personal experience with my son, I am more convinced than ever that mindsets toward learning could matter more than anything else we teach.

Yes, we can!
