Online Venn Daigram maker. Add in cirles and label them then create items to place in and around.
Chris Carter's insight:

Sounds almost silly, but just go ahead and create one. I mean, really make something more that two or three circles.  Make one for each time, customized, that you intend to use a Venn. This is useful.

Why Cliques Form at Some High Schools and Not Others

Why Cliques Form at Some High Schools and Not Others | Transformational Teaching, Thinking, and Technology | Scoop.it
The desire to be around similar people is universal, but not all high schools break down into hardened, John Hughes-style clusters and hierarchies. Why not?
Chris Carter's insight:
If nothing else, teacher-chosen seating forces interactions with kids other kids wold otherwise not associate with, and weakens clique formation. That can be done in any classroom.

Online Learning Must Be Collaborative and Social

Online Learning Must Be Collaborative and Social | Transformational Teaching, Thinking, and Technology | Scoop.it

"An annual report by The Open University said the current key challenge for education specialists is to engage thousands of learners in productive discussions while learning in a collaborative, online environment."

Via EDTC@UTB
Chris Carter's insight:

We've podcasted, written, and spoken concerning this very thing. All effective teaching is, at its heart, relational in nature. We learn from, with, and through other people. We are social creatures. We are at our best when we recognize that we are responsible to a community. As my professional development dictates that I move into the fully online realm of academic instruction I, too, wrestle with the essential element of human interaction.

Carla Kessler's curator insight, November 23, 1:55 PM

Although this is about higher level coursework than middle school, the social and collaborative importance of online learning is even more paramount at the middle grade level. When you choose a computer-based curriculum, look for ways that it allows students to work together or interact with their knowledge.

Audrey's curator insight, November 27, 11:29 AM

This means that  learning online will open up the skype network.  People will  see each other and exchange views in real time. Learning materials can be easily downloaded.  If people from all parts of the country and world are able interact surely this will lead to less prejudice and stereotyping and an understanding of each other as human beings.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, November 27, 1:22 PM

All learning is a social event. Teaching is teaching someone.

ClassDojo Adopts Deletion Policy for Student Data

ClassDojo Adopts Deletion Policy for Student Data | Transformational Teaching, Thinking, and Technology | Scoop.it
The maker of ClassDojo, a popular classroom app, said that starting in January it plans to keep students’ behavioral records for only one school year.
Chris Carter's insight:

Now, that was fast! Imagine if we, the public, communicated with other corporations that are currently making boat loads of money by selling our data that we do not wish them to do so, and we will take our business elsewhere if they continue the practice. I wonder how long it would be before companies start green listing themselves as companies that do not sell or transmit customer data to third parties? I wonder what would happen if a rating service designed to evaluate  companies based upon the companies' practices of selling user data was to become popular? I wonder how much power we, the consumers who fund these companies, actually have?

Privacy Concerns for ClassDojo and Other Tracking Apps for Schoolchildren

Privacy Concerns for ClassDojo and Other Tracking Apps for Schoolchildren | Transformational Teaching, Thinking, and Technology | Scoop.it
Many teachers say the ClassDojo app helps them record classroom conduct, but critics are wary of such apps’ ramifications for data privacy and fairness.
Chris Carter's insight:

This opinion is definitely my own, and does not necessarily represent the views of my employer, colleagues, family, pet cat, or my long lost teddy bear "Snuppy"

I am asking for the beginning of the great privacy discussion that needs to take place across the country, and across the planet. Not that I believe for a moment that any government is going to voluntarily restrict its own data collection efforts, nor effectively monitor itself for compliance concerning any regulations imposed upon them. I wish for everyone impacted by governments' choices to systematically collect every piece of information they can on individuals who have violated no laws, are not suspected of violating laws, and are not believed to be preparing to violate laws, to make their resistance to the destruction of the private sphere clear.

Chris Carter's comment, November 18, 8:18 PM
Dean, you are welcome. I know that we, as members of a modern society, cannot sageguard our privacy against invasive government and businesses, but we must make our opposition to such intrusion clear.
