During the last 25 years or so of coaching negotiations, I have noticed that certain ordinary words can steer the whole negotiation process into a tailspin. The problem lies in how people use those words–what those terms do to their thought process, emotions, and mindsets. Let’s look at some examples.

What Do You Mean You “Need” It Yesterday?

How many times a day do you say the word “need,” for example? People say it all the time. It’s a simple enough word that seems to mean “priority.” Many business people, trying to speed up the bargaining process, will not hesitate to say, “I need it yesterday!”

But if I were to ask an audience in a workshop for a definition of “need,” someone in the room would answer, “It is something required to survive.” Whoa! Required to survive? That’s pretty heavy. Then I ask, “If you don’t have it, and it is required to survive, what happens then?” And they answer, “Death!”

So what happens to us? We run around all day long using a word that drives our emotions to a boiling point, raising stress levels to the max and negatively impacting the very area where our decisions are made in every negotiation–the emotional part of our brain.

You Can’t Make a Person “Understand”

Another word that can ruin our efforts at negotiation is the word “understand.” Anyone who ties understanding to decision making is making a terrible mistake and is going to get hammered in negotiations. Why? Don’t think too hard. The answer is simple; look at your own experience!

How many times have you entered a meeting determined to help people understand a thought, a concept, or an idea only to leave the room without anyone having made a decision? So then what happens? Out comes the power point to help everyone understand, and it only adds to the confusion. Then, after all your beans have been spilled in their lap, you hear those dreaded words, “We’ll take it under advisement.” Or worse, now the audience proclaims to understand the situation perfectly, and have twenty objections to the data presented. What went wrong? You shifted the focus to building an argument for them, rather than building a vision for them.

When we strike the wrong side of the brain with facts and information, we inevitably create objections and this can lead to terrible stalemates. To make matters worse, we tend to repeat the process, pouring more and more facts onto the bonfires of their objections, all in the name of helping others understand.

Arguments, facts, and power points are intellectual. A vision of their problems and pain is emotional–and so is their decision to have their pain be relieved by you and what you present.
