This is the slidedeck from the workshop I delivered for the British Council ‘Technologies and Classrooms’ summer school for teachers in Lithuania in June 2016.

It focuses on a range of tools and resources that teachers can use to support the language development of their younger learners. There is a strong focus on on technologies that enable students to be creative in their use of language.

"What I believe the kids learn during their MasterChef Junior experiences:

     * Additional cross-curricular skills including oral communication, following directions;

     * Working with a team;

     * Tolerance for frustration;

     * That their passions and interests are valuable and meaningful.

Many of the kids in interviews following their elimination from the competition state that it was the best experience of their lives.  I have a hunch that many of these kids would say their MasterChef experiences taught them as much or more than all of the school years combined. I’ve written about creating the conditions for the best day ever.  Educators, in this era of learning, should focus on those conditions that create an environment that each and every one of their students love coming to school and love learning."

eLearning course objectives: Are they necessary?

eLearning course objectives: Are they necessary? | Training, Knowledge, thinking and technology | Scoop.it

No one cares about learning objectives.

Think that’s a rogue statement? Perhaps it is, but it’s one of many positions recently debated with zeal in the E-Learning Heroes community when community member Angela Kaufman asked, “Do learners really care about learning objectives?”

The community’s response to her question surfaced loads of creative ideas and plenty of food for thought, along with references to valuable research that illustrates the nuances around this hot topic. What follows is a compilation of their responses, grouped into some common themes—The Value of Learning Objectives, Creative Ways to Present Learning Objectives, and Research into Learning Objectives.

Technology plays an interesting role in student ownership. That device in their pocket has all the information in the world. It can connect them to anyone, allow for collaboration, and be used for a variety of innovative purposes. As teachers, we have to embrace the notion that technology can open up a world of learning opportunities, and then give our students the chance to own those opportunities.

Although education and schooling are for the benefit of the learner, it also maintains an orderly advancement of the social structure and it is part of preserving what is good for both individuals and society. The word educate means to lead children to adulthood. What that means has both personal and communal implications.

10 Strategies To Make Learning Feel More Like A Game

10 Strategies To Make Learning Feel More Like A Game | Training, Knowledge, thinking and technology | Scoop.it
We’ve talked about gamification quite a bit, which is different than game-based learning, if you’ll recall. (The definition of gamification is the application of game-like mechanics to non-game entities to encourage a specific behavior. You can read more if you’d like.)

Making your classroom work like a game may not be feasible. Terry Heick talked some about the idea in the past, but was talking specifically about video games, whereas many of the items below are inclined more to “games” in general. So we’ve decided to re-approach from another angle with more specific strategies instead of general suggestions.

HJJP's insight:

For centuries we thought that teaching and learning were about the expertise and knowledge of the person delivering the information. However, we now know that the process of delivering, the environment, in essence the psychology of learning plays a much more important role. Making learning feel like a game is one of those techniques which have demonstrated to achieve better results, than those that make learning feel like a chore. The attached article provides some tools to help making learning more like a game than a chore.

This is an interesting recap of how content curation helps brand development and what is needed in a curation tool.

This was meant as a spec for Groupiest, a tool that unfortunately shut down on June 30 after it's initial lack of traction. But regardless of what happened to this tool, the premises on which it was built still stand And are what you should look for in a content curation tool.

These requirements can actually be grouped in 3 main areas:

1. Content discovery: at Scoop.it, we've built a semantic search algorithm that helps you discover content from an infinite number of sources (not just the RSS feeds of the sites you know) by simply entering keywords. We also strongly believe that no algorithm is perfect. So we not only improve these results by taking the actions of other Scoop.it users on that content into account but we ultimately let users decide what to publish. Discovery is automated but not publishing as it's the opportunity to add value and exercise judgement and this is what will create a bond with your audience.

2. Content publishing: this step is not just about hitting publish, it's also about editing your post. Beyond simple formatting, it's about adding your own message to your own voice: your insight as we call it. Bringing context to your audience adds value and helps establish yourself as a thought leader.

3. Analytics: getting a feedback loop is extremely important to anything you do that you'd like to improve over time. Understanding how your audience responded not just through views but also reactions and conversions is extremely important for us.

Making this content loop - discover, publish, analyze - easier and faster for themselves is what efficient professionals and marketers should look when trying to streamline heir content curation process.

I chose this resource because I am interested in incorporating new avenues for student presentations. PowerPoints and traditional poster projects have become more or less antiquated. In particular, I get very frustrated with presentation delivery skills (time specifications, focused on topic, etc.). Thus, I am leaning more towards videos and animations - this relieves presentation anxiety and it is easy for students to manage time requirements of a presentation. Also, I like the concept of having students build a digital portfolio.
