While I am a "Mommy blogger" of sorts (I am TechCommGeek MOM, after all), I would not call myself a dedicated Mommy blogger, but rather I think of myself as a tech comm blogger who has some parental issues and advice now and then.

Even so, this is an interesting article that is worth reading, even if you are not a Mommy or Daddy blogger. Read some of the recommendations. These could easily be applied to your "baby"--your product or service.  There are some worthwhile ideas in here.

This is a really good article that I found on LinkedIn. The author's point in this article is that social media is not merely tweeting out advertisements for a company, but rather a true strategy needs to be put in place to create a community and build branding confidence. It seems common sense, but you'd be surprised. Read the article for more details on how this is achieved.

Terri P's insight:

This article is fabulous. It discusses blended learning and utilizing technologies that younger students already use to help them learn more. Possibilities are available for all students, regardless of age, to accomplish educational and economic dreams by using social media in the classroom. If each instructor learned just one technology, like creating and writing a blog for their students to use or a wiki, or any one of a number of choices, students would engage more, retain more, interact more, and produce more possibilities for heir employment future. It does not mean every faculty member has to change how they teach, just learn how to use technology to enhance your subject matter. Keep up with technology, remain relevant, or retire......

If I understand this authors definition of an intranet, it sounds as if not only faculty and staff would benefit, but students too. There needs to be a way to connect socially for class content discussions between students and faculty other than emails, which take entirely too long to be answered.

This topic is crucial to instructors of adults who want to assist adult learners to accept new (scary) technologies. in order for adult learners to remain in school, they need to have technology explained and even demonstrated in order to make it part of their daily experience. This is the point at which many students drop out, if they have not been helped properly.

Terri P's insight:

I think, if schools and administrators are not careful, they will close off their own usefulness and lose their jobs because, as this article states, people, kids and adults, can find the information they want and need online and presented in a clearer format with the ability to 'replay' the info over and over. You cannot do that in a classroom squeezed into a timeslot, forced to adhere to specific syllabi and accreditation requirements, shoving information down the throats of students checking their phones every 30 seconds.

Terri P's insight:

The only way employees buy into their company's pay scale is because they have no choice. Either it is the only job available, they have limited skills, or the market they are in cannot sustain higher wages (not enough revenue for company). But this article is correct, if you want employee morale to be elevated, positive, and embracing of new ideas, then employees MUST be given a REAL voice in how some processes are conceived or changed. Management MUST walk around and physically talk with employees, watch them work, see them interact, and then praise their accomplishments. A little goes a long way. Most employees of large firms feel like ants in a big anthill. No one knows their name, or cares...just do the work...So acknowledging individuals for their contributions, no matter how slight, equals increased morale.

Now this article is about accompany in India, but the concept applies worldwide. In this wonderful age of technology, the personal touch has an endangered species. Managers, be eco friendly and notice your teams, encourage them and praise their efforts. Let them know their efforts matter and why! Tell the employees just what their job means to the company and the client.

“Check your expectations. Kimberly-Clark’s Tina Busch, global learning and development director, said, ‘We wanted our people to engage with one another without boundaries’—and that’s what they got. Every member in an organization won’t participate equally. There will be noise. And some of that noise will end up having value, or building a bridge that will prove useful later. Just like in real life.”

Authentic Learning for the 21st Century An Overview

By Marilyn M. Lombardi

Edited by Diana G. Oblinger

ELI Paper 1: 2007

Abstract

Learning-by-doing is generally considered the most effective way to learn. The Internet and a variety of emerging communication, visualization, and simulation technologies now make it possible to offer students authentic learning experiences ranging from experimentation to real-world problem solving. This white paper explores what constitutes authentic learning, how technology supports it, what makes

it effective, and why it is important.

The Big Mistake in Elearning

Describes a fundamental shift that I think needs to happen to make corporate elearning more effective.
Terri P's insight:

I really liked this video. It discusses how information is NOT what is needed to help employees do their jobs better or safer, but behavior identification and modification are. Then and only then should information be offered to target the wanted behavior change. For companies that merely bombard employees with endless computer-training modules, this is an essential piece of information to change managements perspective.
