Kleinspiration: An App to Assess Reading Fluency: @FluencyFinder!

Kleinspiration: An App to Assess Reading Fluency: @FluencyFinder! | traffic lawyer nyc | Scoop.it

"FluencyFinder http://www.fluencyfinder.com/ the popular educational iOS app for determining Reading Fluency has just recently released their long awaited update.

What is FluencyFinder?  FluencyFinder is a fantastically simple teaching tool for educators wanting to assess student’s Reading Level (Grades 1st-8th).  This is done by printing out a Reading passage (6 per grade level w/ more on the way) and then having the student read while following along on an iOS device (iPad/iPhone).  The teacher will begin the assessment by starting the app timer and then tap (+) or (-) as a student makes or corrects a mistake.  When the student is finished the teacher will end the timer and then press the finish assessment button to get instant real-time results.  These detailed results will include WPM, word counts, number of mistakes and more."

Gabrielle Dunn's curator insight, September 10, 2013 11:49 PM

This a great tool that teachers can use in the classroom to assess reading fluency. The app will provide information on where mistakes were made which will allow teachers to get a more detailed report on a students reading ability. This can then go on to determine reading groups in the classroom and will allow the teacher to work with students to improve in areas they struggle with.

New Context Search Engine For Twitter To Get The Most Relevant Topics, People And Content: Tame

New Context Search Engine For Twitter To Get The Most Relevant Topics, People And Content: Tame | traffic lawyer nyc | Scoop.it

From Official Website:
"Tame analyzes the last 24 hours of your timeline and crunches it down to a top 10 overview of the most relevant hashtags, users and links. Then you can use Tame like a search engine—and get the most relevant topics, people and content.

How does Tame work?
Check out this detailed presentation on Slideshare:
http://www.slideshare.net/Tame_it/tame-product-guideen

Use cases:
- Get a quick overview of your Twitter timeline;
- Keep up with topics you care about;
- Find specific hashtags on certain topics;
- Find opinion leaders and key communicators;
- Keep up with your constituency;
- Take Tame with you..."

From review article on TechCrunch:
"Tame is described as a "context search engine" for Twitter, the mobile and tablet-friendly web app analyses content from your Twitter followers or based on a specific search to algorithmically surface the top hashtags, the Twitter users most mentioned, and the top links shared over the past 24 hours. The idea is to give you an at-a-glance overview of content populated on Twitter via your own Twitter feed or topics that you explicitly wish to delve into, without having to do much upfront work.

In practice, Tame appears to work quite well out the gate. The UI offers a simple three column view consisting of Links, Topics, and People. These are either based on your Twitter timeline — the users you follow — or specific searches that you enter. A slider lets you adjust the time span from 1-24 hours. Clicking on a link, topic or person opens up a panel displaying the originating tweet (or tweets)..."

Disney develops 'magical' device to make fingertips sing

Disney develops 'magical' device to make fingertips sing | traffic lawyer nyc | Scoop.it

Disney has developed a device to transmit sound through the human body.

The Ishin-Den-Shin technology uses a standard microphone to record audio and then converts it into an inaudible signal transmitted through the body of the person holding the microphone.

When they touch someone's earlobe, an organic speaker is formed and the sound becomes audible, effectively whispering a message into that person's ear.

The sound can be passed from person to person using any physical contact.

The technology, which was developed at Disney Research in Pittsburgh, received an honorary mention at this week's Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria.

Augmented Reality in the Science Classroom

Augmented Reality in the Science Classroom | traffic lawyer nyc | Scoop.it

"

I just finished week one of the new school year.  What an exciting four days!

Thanks to the ISTE Conference and a series of new connections, this summer was an inspiration.   Armed with too many new ideas to implement and a slew of new technologies, I jumped in, iPad first.  My new eighth-graders had never used iPads in the classroom, but based on their enthusiasm for technology, I knew anything I threw at them would be a huge hit!   I decided to go big and introduced them to augmented reality right from the start.  To say they were “impressed” is an understatement!"

Jenny H's curator insight, September 11, 2013 5:01 AM

This showcases an great app that focuses on Augmented Reality! The teacher who wrote this blog was teaching Year 8 students about safety, emergency protocols and tools in the science laboratory. He taught it in an engaging way with the use of an Augmented Reality app called Aurasma on the iPad. Each student had an iPad and were told to walk around the lab and take notes of the tools that were on benches.

He also talks about how he had a few dilemmas but worked his way around them and found other alternatives - it definitely shows his willingness to try something new in the classroom.

This is definitely worth reading, it could help you think of new engaging ways to incorporate Augmented Reality in the classroom.

Making lectures and lessons more interactive with mQlicker | traffic lawyer nyc | Scoop.it

As the traditional lecture has come increasingly under fire for being completely out of touch with modern teaching and learning methods, there has been a move by many teachers, conference presenters and lecturers to make their teaching techniques more modern and interactive. One of the key technologies for enabling this has been a range of audience response systems that provide real time responses to polls, questions and surveys while the speakers is actually presenting.

Chwayita Ceejay January's insight:'

A very interesting tool, that teachers can use inside and outside the formal learning area. Where students can interact with the information live during the lecture (where most interaction should happen anyway) closing the 'cold and insigificant' student-lecturer relationship. Students can respond to the data while the lecture is in progress. As expensive and time-consuming (training) this intiative would be to udertake it would certainly improve lecture attedance. :D
