Video – Glencore-Xstrata’s deadly Tampakan mining project

Video – Glencore-Xstrata’s deadly Tampakan mining project | Trade unions and social activism | Scoop.it
The B’laan indigenous people are in danger.
They are locked in a struggle to save their ancestral homeland from one of the largest mining companies in the world. The Anglo-Swiss multinational Glencore-Xstrata holds a controlling stake in the Tampakan project to build a huge opencast copper and gold mine right in the middle of B’laan territories on Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines.
If the Tampakan mining project goes ahead 4,000 people will be forced out of their homes. Furthermore, 10,000 hectares of land will be destroyed. This land is home to rainforests and is the source of five rivers.
In the face of strong local opposition to the project the area has become a heavily militarised zone. Army and paramilitary forces which have received payments from the Tampakan project have been responsible for atrocities against the B’laan people. Over the past four years alone, ten B’laan men, women and children have been killed, including the massacre of B’laan woman Juvy Capio and her two children aged eight and thirteen. The B’laan communities directly affected by the project have made clear they are totally opposed to it.
In the Philippines and internationally, the Tampakan mining project has become a symbol of the violence and militarisation which too often go hand in hand with the extractive industries, and the willingness of multinational companies to ride roughshod over the wishes of the communities whose natural resources they covet.

Take action today - tell Glencore-Xstrata to respect the wishes of the B’laan people and withdraw from the Tampakan project
