Plenty of subway stations look like they belong in a horror movie, but this Paris promotion for Ridley Scott's Alien prequel Prometheus takes the concept to the extreme, setting up an advertising installation in the Saint-Martin stop, deserted for...

"Michael Humphrey (Forbes) : « The key piece of content innovation for me [in Prometheus' social marketing campaign] is the future TEDTalk (the unlocking system is cool but not all that new). For TED, there is another level of production — writing, acting, staging, editing, etc. — that goes beyond anything in the film. It flows from the story, contextualizes it, blurs the line of creation and audience, for the sake of the story and not just the marketing (although that’s the impetus for now)… Being willing to spill your central resources beyond the movie itself is, while not entirely unique, awfully rare and perhaps pivotal. »"

Prometheus writer Jon Spaihts on How to Create a Great Space Movie

Prometheus writer Jon Spaihts on How to Create a Great Space Movie | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Jon Spaihts wrote five drafts of Ridley Scott's Prometheus, before handing it off to Damon Lindelof.

Excerpt:

"io9: How do you create relatable characters in the midst of a story with power suits and cryogenic ships and alien worlds, and vast unimaginable distances?

JS: You keep your stories rooted in the world we know. The more you re-invent, the harder your audience has to work to connect. If your fantastic world has recognizable families, or realistic workplace politics, or a spacefaring army that still dresses, walks, and talks like the army we know… then we have a starting place for that connection. Familiarity is an essential tool – and a great frame for your big re-inventions.

Above all, invest in the universal human experiences: love and heartbreak, ambition and frustration, rivalry and enmity. Loneliness, yearning, wonder...."

"I am beginning to worry that Ridley Scott’s Prometheus may not be the clever piece of sci-fi we have been continuously told it will be.
Spoilers ahead.
Sure it looks very cool, but lots of the trailers seem to be giving away a bit too much making it look like a generic sci-fi horror following the same beats as the original Alien but with some added psuedo-philosophy about the origins of humanity...."

Prometheus – Guardian UK review

Prometheus – Guardian UK review | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Ridley Scott's sci-fi classic Alien is a hard act to follow – so he's made a gut-wrenching prequel instead, writes Philip French...

"...Prometheus begins, as Kubrick's did, with a trail of clues on Earth that takes the explorers into space. In 2089 two archaeologists, Elizabeth Shaw (the lively Swedish star Noomi Rapace) and Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) discover ancient pictograms in a cave on Skye that persuade them that visitors from a distant planet have visited earth. She's a practising Christian sporting a cross around her neck, he's a militant atheist, and they gradually become convinced that these extraterrestrials might have actually created our world...."

!!! Prometheus, Dark Souls, And Storytelling In Video Games Vs. Film - Forbes

!!! Prometheus, Dark Souls, And Storytelling In Video Games Vs. Film - Forbes | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Storytelling in games is very different than in film. Alyssa Rosenberg flags a fascinating interview over at io9 with Prometheus screenwriter Jon Spaihts.

“Storytelling in games has matured tremendously in the past decade,” Spaihts tells io9′s Charlie Jane Anders. ”Some really great work has been done. But the design requirements are totally different, almost the opposite of filmic storytelling.

“The central character of a game is most often a cipher – an avatar into which the player projects himself or herself. The story has to have a looseness to accommodate the player’s choices. This choose-your-own adventure quality is a challenge for storytellers and, I fear, militates against art.

“A filmmaker is trying to make you look at something a certain way – almost to force an experience on you. Think of the legendary directors, whose perspective is the soul of their art. It’s the opposite of a sandbox world. It’s a mind-meld with a particular visionary...”
