A Short History of Interactivity

A Short History of Interactivity | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
This is no (r)evolution

"Each day there are more of us interactive storytellers. Because we enjoy the freedom of creating with fewer boundaries, because we could not take another “lean-back” century or because it is just that thing to explore right now. But it would be a great loss to engage in the craft of telling interactive stories without knowing where we come from. So there is, a bit of background "

How copyright law gives Amazon too much power over the book industry

How copyright law gives Amazon too much power over the book industry | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
And while the law was passed at the behest of content creators, it also gave a lot of power to platform owners. If you buy a movie on iTunes, you're effectively forced to continue buying Apple devices if you want to keep watching the movie. Tools to transfer copy-protected movies you've purchased from iTunes onto another platform exist, but they're illegal and, accordingly, not very user-friendly.

Amazon has taken advantage of the DMCA too. Kindle books come copy-protected so that only Amazon-approved software can read it without breaking the law. Of course, software to convert it to other formats exists, but it's illegal and accordingly isn't very convenient or user-friendly.

BBC - Blogs - Internet blog - How we built "The Doctor and the Dalek" CBBC game

BBC - Blogs - Internet blog - How we built "The Doctor and the Dalek" CBBC game | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
“The Doctor and the Dalek” CBBC game forms part of the BBC’s ‘Make It Digital’ initiative.

And it's exactly the kind of hybrid we love at Somethin’ Else. It’s a ‘game with purpose’ — intrinsically fantastic to play, yet achieving something concrete and measurable. Playing the game delivers not just endorphins but specific parts of the UK’s school curriculum (‘Key Stage 2 and 3 programming’).

From the off, my team designed a game loop we were certain would do the job: skedaddle over Skaro (say) until you are blocked by something that can only be passed by upgrading your Dalek; the upgrading process would require completion of a ‘coding challenge.’

Easy words — and still not enough to describe a game someone can build.

The Crack Up: Transmedia Dance Performance | Australian Arts Review

The Crack Up: Transmedia Dance Performance | Australian Arts Review | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
In 1936, Esquire Magazine published American author F. Scott Fitzgerald’s essay The Crack-Up – a loose-form story of a man losing his grip on reality.

Led by director and choreographer Kim Vincs and a team of designers and animators at the Deakin Motion.Lab, The Crack Up interprets Fitzgerald’s story and brings the themes to the forefront of digital technology and performance. Live dancers and virtual performers are set against a massive shifting and crumbling world of 3D-projected stereoscopic landscapes and interactive visualisation systems.

Audience members will wear 3D glasses to see the imagery come to life in stunning high resolution, as it envelops performers in an environment inspired by, but entirely foreign to, Fitzgerald’s imagination

"He cuts a lithe figure, to be sure. But, no doubt about it. There he is, seated at a table at the Standard Hotel bar. Indisputably corporeal. Reflecting light.

That may change when the drinking starts.

Steven Soderbergh is drinking his own brand of Bolivian liquor, Singani 63, which has a number of special characteristics. It’s made from a particular kind of grape grown at a particular altitude in one particular place in the world. It creates a particular kind of buzz--Soderbergh has a technical description for it: “It will f*&@ you up.” It may, depending on your particular circumstances and chemical composition, allow you to feel remarkably healthy the day after you’ve become f*cked up. Indie games scene looks for silver lining in the cloud of Gamergate

Indie games scene looks for silver lining in the cloud of Gamergate | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
There was a ghost at IndieCade, the annual gathering of independent game developers in Los Angeles. You couldn't see Gamergate, a ghoulish presence that has haunted the video game community for the

past two months, but you could sense it. Its specter inhabited talks on diversity and community management. It trailed conversations, bled into nervous jokes, and wormed into interactions between developers and the press. It stood behind smiling figures as they discussed solidarity and ways to endure in these complicated times.

But despite the recent maelstrom of controversies and vitriolic exchanges, few at IndieCade spoke of Gamergate with hate. Grief, perhaps. A dulled anger with its edges worn down by constant exposure, maybe. But not hate. If anything, it was primarily with a baffled exhaustion..."

We're seeing the return of old-fashioned serialized literature.

'A year ago, a 24-year-old college student named Anna Todd stumbled on a trove of feverish fan fiction about the boy band One Direction. It had been posted to Wattpad, a Toronto-based website and app that lets anyone write a story and comment on the stories of others. Entranced, Todd began concocting her own tale, a torrid romance between a sweet-hearted ingenue and a brooding version of One Direction singer Harry Styles. She typed the first 600 words into Wattpad and hit Publish....'

My Favorite Things: Bryan Talbot, Graphic Novel Man

My Favorite Things: Bryan Talbot, Graphic Novel Man | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Early on, Dez Skinn characterizes Talbot as the “David Bowie of comics,” describing his shape-shifting capacity: Talbot adjusts his style to the demands of different kinds of stories and has worked across the full spectrum of British comics — from early work in the underground comics through commercial work on The Sandman or Batman through to his more mature works, the Luther Arkwright saga, A Tale of One Bad Rat, Alice in Sunderland, the Grandville series, and A Dotter in Her Father’s Eyes. Taking Talbot’s virtuosity as a starting point, The Graphic Novel Man surveys his work, offering expert commentary from his contemporaries, and from time to time, giving us a chance to really focus on the complex choices he makes in the construction of any given page.

Anna Todd was a bored Army wife when she began to devour fan fiction about British boy band One Direction on Wattpad, the free online story-sharing community that Publisher's Weekly called "a YouTube for stories rather than videos." Beyond Dickens: Trends and Tech in Serial Fiction | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

'For purists, a serial is a work that the author writes in progress, releases on a specific schedule or deadline (close to the time when the writing gets done), and is produced without a preconceived middle or ending. Such serials often involve reader engagement and may incorporate reader feedback that helps the author mold the story along the way. Bestselling science-fiction author John Scalzi launched his career on a serial, Old Man’s War, and of course everybody knows and even loves shows like All My Children. The soap opera is classic serial storytelling..."
