POWER TO THE PIXEL:

By Rosie Lavan

In the last in our series of interviews with the sponsors of the four major prizes to be awarded at The Pixel Market 2012 in October, we talk to Michel Reilhac, Executive Director of ARTE France Cinéma, about the ARTE Pixel Pitch Prize. Every production team presenting a project at The Pixel Pitch is in with a chance of winning this prestigious £6,000 award, which the French broadcaster is generously providing for a third year running. Here, Michel explains ARTE’s commitment to its partnership with PttP, and why cross-media has weathered the economic storm.

Power to the Pixel: ARTE works very closely with PttP. Can you describe the significance of this relationship to ARTE?

Michel Reilhac: We consider Power to the Pixel (PttP) to be a leading transmedia advocate in Europe and the world. As ARTE has now set hybrid content as its core strategic reason for being and operating as a content provider, our partnership with PttP represents our will to be at the forefront of how hybrid storytelling develops. It allows us to convey to the industry the signal that we are committed to supporting this new form in the art of storytelling.PttP: In awarding the ARTE Pixel Pitch Prize, what qualities will the judges be looking for?

MR: We will be looking for truly native hybrid content, stories that are built from conception up onto different platforms, integrating the specifics of each platform to complement each other and enrich the whole story experience for the participant. The fuller and more complex the story experience for the participative audience, the better…!

25 Things You Should Know About Transmedia Storytelling

25 Things You Should Know About Transmedia Storytelling | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

My Fave Bullet Point Title??

17. Faster, Transmediacat, Kill, Kill!

My Three Fave KEY Points:

14. The Word I Like: "Emergence"

I’m starting to feel that the success of a given transmedia project lives or dies on how much emergence it affords — emergent gameplay being unexpected or unintended game interaction, and emergent narrative being stories growing out of the experience that you did not plan for or anticipate (and note that both are strongly driven by audience). You cannot demand or force emergence, but I think you can cultivate it by leaving room for it, by designing aspects that cede authorial control (or some portion of it) to those who are participating in your story. It also may work if you just hand out buckets of hallucinogens.

18. Bridges and Holes, Bridges and Holes

Transmedia relies on strong transitional elements — how do you move the audience across the many spaces? How do you remove obstacles? How do you get them to want to overcome the obstacles you’re incapable of removing? Story bridges and rabbit holes — places they can cross knowingly or spots they can fall into the narrative unexpectedly — are necessary components to the infrastructure.

20. Cheap As Free

The perception of transmedia storytelling is that it’s expensive. And it can be. But it doesn’t have to be. The Internet has made content delivery easy as Sunday morning. A great many tools are free — ask Jay Bushman how an entire story can be told over Twitter. Many tools you already possess — like, say, your phone — have content creation tools already built into them. (We’ve long passed the time when a phone is just a phone. Mine is made of nano-bots. It knits sweaters!) It’s getting cheaper, and maybe even easier.

""In the past it's always been very difficult to connect television shows, which are always evolving, with video games, which are static," Trion Worlds CEO Lars Buttler states, going on to say that Trion has cracked that code. "In our unique setup, we can do things other people have never dared to try before."

Defiance the TV show and Defiance the MMO will, according to Buttler, "literally depend on each other and co-evolve..."

Meanwhile, over on Minecraft The Hunger Games are running 24/7

Meanwhile, over on Minecraft The Hunger Games are running 24/7 | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

A few weeks back, my neighbour’s 8 year old son spent almost over an hour carefully spelling out ‘Minecraft’ in foot and half high multi-coloured letters on the sidewalk in front of his and mine. When I asked him why he liked the game, he said: ‘It’s entertaining…. And it’s really good for spatial stuff and building things.’ His eyes lit up and he started describing all the things he’d built, the CN Tower, a castle, and various objects from volcanos to dynamite. Later this week he’s going to show me what he’s made and I can’t wait.

Minecraft is huge – an online game sandbox that allows anyone to build pretty much anything, developed by Markus ‘Notch’ Persson. Not only was Notch awarded the BAFTA Special Award in March 2012 for ‘significant contribution to a sector,’ Minecraft is now the best selling XBox Live Arcade game ever, with over 2 million games sold. So when a friend’s 14 year old son, Alex, told me he spent a ton of time playing in online versions of The Hunger Games built in Minecraft, I ever curious, immediately asked if he would show me...

‘Transmedia Engagement: Participatory Culture to Activism’

‘Transmedia Engagement: Participatory Culture to Activism’ | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

The following is a talk I gave June 1 in Toronto which sprang from my ongoing interest in The Hunger Games as a transmedia campaign. I wrote an earlier blog post, ‘Why The Hunger Games is Not Harry Potter, and Why You Should Care,’ in response to finishing the novels, which were far more disturbing than I had expected. Further mulling on Geoffrey Long’s How to Ride a Lion: A Call for a Higher Transmedia Criticism and Jeff Gomez & Fabian Niciezo’s “6 Reasons Why ‘the Avengers’ is Crushing it at the Box Office” resulted in this case study on ‘Transmedia Engagement: Participatory Culture to Activism.’ Your thoughts are welcome!

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious: Transmedia tools – Conducttr Mobile and Weavr

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious: Transmedia tools – Conducttr Mobile and Weavr | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"It’s been a while – a year or more – since I last wrote something about possible tools to use for transmedia storytelling. In the meanwhile, so many new opportunities, products and tools have come up. What prompted me to write this post was two tools that are out there now and that represent quite different spectras of the transmedia field; both could be very useful for a given project, and I’d love to try them both out within the scope of a project.

Basically, everything and anything that makes it easier for me to get my stories to the desired audience in a logical and engaging and compelling and immersive way, I’m all for it, and these two services might just fit the bill.

First there is Conducttr Mobile, launched at the Transmedia Living Lab in Madrid the other day by Rob Pratten. Now, Conducttr has been around for a while as a tool for automating the telling of a narrative over several platforms – online, text messages and so on. This seems like the very logical next step, to take it out from the laptop or tablet and into the world of mobile..."

Great Post by Jeff Gomez: 'The Avengers': The First All-Star Movie By Design

Great Post by Jeff Gomez: 'The Avengers': The First All-Star Movie By Design | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

By Jeff Gomez, 25 May 2012

'With some industry observers projecting global box office revenues as high as $2 billion for The Avengers, it’s clear that the film is an unprecedented success. Many have pegged Marvel Studios franchise producer Kevin Feige’s creative and strategic approach in building a shared “story world” out of a series of movies (Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man II, Captain America and Thor) that coalesced into a kind of all-star movie in Joss Whedon’s Avengers.

But contrary to popular belief, this is not the first time a mess of heroes (or anti-heroes) have been assembled in the service of a greater purpose‚ or multiple revenue streams.

Our love of team-ups, in fact, dates back to the Stone Age. Early man imbued all things around him with animus, and the coolest things — the sun, the moon, the ocean — were either the incarnations of, or controlled by superior beings, gods. It was just a matter of time before pantheons formed, relationships got complicated, and villains arose to challenge the benevolent....'

"... #3. Homer, Dante and…Stan Lee! Embracing a Mythos of Our Own

Marvel has an intrinsic understanding that over the past five decades, their characters have become woven into the fabric of a greater global popular culture. The potent combo of licensing and digital technology has made characters like The Hulk and Captain America familiar to street kids in Botswana. Only after these past couple of weeks has the media finally caught up, finally admitting that superheroes have legitimately become our contemporary mythology, just as well-told tales of Greek and Roman gods were the blockbusters of their own epochs...."
