The Arrival | Clockwork Watch | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"The Arrival is the first of three graphic novels, setting the scene for a three-year long transmedia experience.

London 1899. Steam billows out from every corner of the city while huge Zeppelin airships float in the sky overhead. Enter the world of Clockwork Watch, a place where Victorian values are coupled with anachronistic technology, not least of which are the clockwork servants - the mechanical slaves that keep this society ticking along - this is the world of Steampunk..."

Simon Staffans on: Closed or open participation in transmedia? | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"We hosted our bi-monthly MindClub in Vasa, Finland, the other day, and had the great pleasure of welcoming Christy Dena as our main speaker. Something in particular stuck to my mind from the chat with Christy and other participants afterwards, and that’s what this brief post is about.

See, transmedia is many times (and in my opinion most often should be) inclusive of the audience and encouraging audience participation in one way or another (just googling ”audience participation in transmedia” yields 80k+ hits, for instance). But then, opinions start to differ, especially regarding the level and the way and the openness of the participation.

Now, any participation must, naturally, make sense within the scope of the project and as a part of the story world. If this is a given, however, we come to the question of the nature of the participation..."

So lovely & moving: Wild Things: Drawings, Quotes and Memories from Maurice Sendak

So lovely & moving: Wild Things: Drawings, Quotes and Memories from Maurice Sendak | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Maurice Sendak, the author and illustrator behind classics like Where the Wild Things Are and In the Night Kitchen, died today at age 83, leaving behind an incomparable and enormous body of work.

Bill Moyers on Sendak:

"You asked me how "revolutionary" Where the Wild Things Are is. There have been a good many fine picture books in the past. (Some by Margaret Wise Brown, and illustrated by one of two or three or four talented artists.) But I think Wild Things is the first complete work of art in the picture book field, conceived, written, illustrated, executed in entirety by one person of authentic genius. Most books are written from the outside in. But Wild Things comes from the inside out, if you know what I mean. And I think Maurice's book is the first picture book to recognize the fact that children have powerful emotions, anger and love and hate and only after all that passion, the wanting to be "where someone loved him best of all." [...] it just seems to me that Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are goes deeper than previous picture books."

Beastie Boys release official statement Friday after Adam Yauch's death:| Arts | National Post

Beastie Boys release official statement Friday after Adam Yauch's death:| Arts | National Post | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Worth the read to remember all Yauch's passions & achievements:

"It is with great sadness that we confirm that musician, rapper, activist and director Adam “MCA” Yauch, founding member of Beastie Boys and also of the Milarepa Foundation that produced the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits, and film production and distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories, passed away in his native New York City this morning after a near-three-year battle with cancer. He was 47 years old.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Yauch taught himself to play bass in high school, forming a band for his 17th birthday party that would later become known the world over as Beastie Boys.

With fellow members Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Adrock” Horovitz, Beastie Boys would go on to sell over 40 million records, release four #1 albums–including the first hip hop album ever to top the Billboard 200, the band’s 1986 debut full length, Licensed To Ill–win three Grammys, and the MTV Video Vanguard Lifetime Achievement award. Last month Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, with Diamond and Horovitz reading an acceptance speech on behalf of Yauch, who was unable to attend..."

Transmedia Lab | Blog | When fan communities embrace the principle of storytelling 1/3 | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

by Aurore Gallarino, published on 7.05.2012

"The aim of this series of articles is to provide a complete overview of certain fan practices which can be considered as potential transmedia practices, in particular in terms of storytelling. For our purposes the idea is not to exhaustively cover the new ways that fan communities appropriate, rewrite, and poach (De Certeau, 1980; Jenkins, 1992) from “mediacultures productions” (Maigret, Macé 2005), but instead offer a journey, which is neither linear nor complete, to the heart of expanded universes (Peyron, 2008) where fans create, navigate, and prolong the experience they first had. On the first leg of the journey, we will look at “fan community story factories”...."

Rob Pratten on: Audience Participation with Linear TV – Transmedia Storyteller

Rob Pratten on: Audience Participation with Linear TV – Transmedia Storyteller | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"Question: In a TV fictional drama that’s been shot and edited, how do you introduce audience participation?
Answer: Make the TV series part of a larger open storyworld and provide additional participation layers.
Too often participation in TV is limited to game shows. Telephone voting evolved to text voting and has now evolved to web-based voting but participation is still largely quiz-based voting. What if the audience could actually enter a fictional drama as their own character and explore the world in such a way that they feel the dilemmas presented to the on-screen characters?..."

Great Interview: Transmedia Storytelling Around The World with Henry Jenkins | Transmedia Storytelling Berlin

Great Interview: Transmedia Storytelling Around The World with Henry Jenkins | Transmedia Storytelling Berlin | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Excerpt:

"Can you think of any examples of content, either mainstream or niche, that are great case studies for how things should play out?

HJ: If we want to describe transmedia in its classic forms, we might point towards The Matrix and Star Wars in film or Lost and Heroes in television. Each of these examples sought to systematically disperse elements of the story across as many media platforms as possible, using the full resources of the dominant media. This is transmedia storytelling. More recently, we might point towards Glee as an especially powerful example of how performances can be constructed across media, which represents a different approach to thinking about what transmedia entertainment is..."
