Good Will Goes Viral Through Social For Karen The Bus Monitor « Sysomos Blog

Good Will Goes Viral Through Social For Karen The Bus Monitor « Sysomos Blog | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

A little over a week ago a man saw a video posted on YouTube of a bunch of 7th graders picking on their elderly bus monitor named Karen. The video goes for 10 minutes and shows the children actually bring her to tears. The man, Max Sidorov, who had never met Karen (Karen is from New York State in the US and Max from Toronto, Ontario in Canada), saw the video and felt so badly that this could happen that he had to do something about it. So Max started out with a simple idea, to use crowd-funding site Indiegogo to raise some money to send the bullied bus monitor on a much needed vacation.

While not all crowd-funding projects catch on and actually get funded, this one grabbed the attention of the world. Using our social media monitoring and analytic tool, MAP, I found that this story was talked about almost 30,000 times in just over a week....

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious: Brands and transmedia

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious: Brands and transmedia | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

I was interviewed by Stefania from Italian magazine Subvertising last week. It was an interesting interview, that really made me think through my stance on brands and transmedia – the how, the why, and the why nots.

One point I feel the need to elaborate a little bit on is how I think brands and companies easily can benefit from applying transmedia storytelling methods for their products as well as for their brands and companies. Stefanie asked me if I saw a likeness between transmedia on the one hand and brand engagement on the other hand. My answer was:

Certainly. That’s why I believe that brands can have so much use of transmedia storytelling methods; there is no need to go all out and throw iPad apps paired with graphic novels at people in order to market a cookie brand, but the cookie brand could make enormous use of the way transmedia projects are developed – building the story world the brand wants to exist in, planning narrative superstructures that fit the image of the brand and its products, developing entry points for the audience, things to collaborate on and share as well as a reason to do so and the tools to do so, and to share their creations with their friends… all in all, transmedia storytelling has a lot to offer brands.

To clarify the brief answer above, here are five points I believe matter for brands and companies when thinking about applying transmedia storytelling methods to their marketing and image building:...

How Seanan McGuire Perfected Her Fictional Zombie Virus

How Seanan McGuire Perfected Her Fictional Zombie Virus | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"When Seanan McGuire set out to write her Newsflesh trilogy, she went to some extreme lengths to make her zombie virus as realistic as possible....

....Initially the people at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were unsure how to field questions on a zombie virus. Fortunately, the receptionist recognized McGuire as the author of “The Black Death” — a folk song about the devastating plague that hit Europe in the 1300s — and offered to put her in touch with the experts.

Still, it took more than a dozen calls to work out the details of her zombie contagion. “After about the 17th time,” says McGuire, “I called and said, ‘If I did this, this, this, this, this, this and this, could I raise the dead?’ And got, ‘Don’t … don’t do that.’ And at that point, I knew I had a viable virus.”..."

Like: A History of the Internet Told Through Retro Movie Sites | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Unlike most Internet destinations, official movie websites are useful for a brief moment in time—making them a perfect capsule of a specific moment in Internet history. Yet, unlike a Times Square billboard, these sites (at least sometimes) neither get revamped nor get taken down because space out here is seemingly infinite and comparatively cheap. When faced with a choice to take down or continue hosting a site, movie studios probably figure, why bother removing them at all?

Thus we get these neglected pieces of Internet floating around the Web, like this untouched You've Got Mail site, which came to our attention through Twitter following writer-director Nora Ephron's death Tuesday. With its 1998 release date, the website gives us a frozen-in-amber look at the what 1998 Internet looked like. (And this site is oh-so 1998.)...

The future of Video on Demand? More variety in ads, and having to sit through them no matter what

The future of Video on Demand? More variety in ads, and having to sit through them no matter what | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Comcast has identified a growth area of its business: selling ads for Video on Demand programming.

Expect the way that ads appear in Video On Demand content to evolve dramatically over the next few months. Shifts in technology from “dynamically inserting” ads to ensuring that viewers don’t have the ability to fast-forward through advertisements will change the way that ads and VoD content mix, according to Comcast executives, leading to what they’re calling a “hockey stick jump” in ad revenue from the service.

“We have 400 million monthly VoD views on Comcast. I’d love to have a dollar for every view,” said Comcast Spotlight’s West regional vice president of integrated media sales Chip Meehan during an appearance on a panel at the Multichannel News/Broadcasting & Cable fourth annual On Demand Summit yesterday. Meehan predicts a “tenfold” uptick in ad impressions on VoD content...

Inside Minority Report‘s ‘Idea Summit,’ Visionaries Saw the Future

Inside Minority Report‘s ‘Idea Summit,’ Visionaries Saw the Future | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

The year was 1999, and Steven Spielberg was preparing to turn Philip K. Dick’s short story “The Minority Report” into a $100 million action movie starring Tom Cruise. There was just one problem: The story was set in the undated future, and the director had no idea what that future should look like. He wanted the world of the movie to be different from our own, but he also wanted to avoid the exaggerated and often dystopian speculation that plagued most science fiction.

Instead, he wanted his film to be a realistic depiction of how things might actually look in 50 years. So Spielberg convened an ad hoc think tank: He invited a small group of the foremost thinkers in science and technology, along with a handful of people involved with the movie, to hang out for a weekend and talk about the future....

To mark the 10th anniversary of Minority Report‘s June 21 release, Wired spoke to more than a dozen people who were at the so-called “idea summit” that delved deep into the future. As participant Joel Garreau recalls, “I don’t think many of us knew what the fuck we were getting ourselves into.”

Nice: Behind The Innovative Social/Content-Driven Campaign For “Prometheus”

Nice: Behind The Innovative Social/Content-Driven Campaign For “Prometheus” | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

The plot of Ridley Scott’s sci-fi film Prometheus--a sprawling exploration of the origins of man--may have raised some questions but the movie’s marketing campaign was, unquestionably, one of the most original and absorbing in recent memory.

Ignition Interactive, the creative agency behind much of the Hunger Games’ online campaign (previously profiled on Co.Create), designed and executed a similarly complex and bar-raising effort that aimed to engage potential moviegoers in the mysterious world of Prometheus by utilizing bespoke content and some previously unexploited avenues for marketing.

While The Hunger Games had a rabid and active fanbase from the books long before that movie came along, Prometheus’ pre-existing fanbase was much smaller and less obvious. Film geeks and fans of Scott’s 1979 film, Alien (for which Prometheus is a prequel of sorts) form a dedicated core that Ignition was charged with expanding. The L.A.-based company did so by employing some of the tactics from the Hunger Games campaign as well as a number of new ones....

Hierarchy of INTERNET needs | What Would The Internet Do?

Hierarchy of INTERNET needs | What Would The Internet Do? | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Excerpt:

"The above illustration was inspired by yesterday’s news around Facebook. Essentially what the social networking giant did was make a small tweak in everyone’s profile. Instead of displaying the email address we had all designated as our primary contact, Facebook changed everyone’s default to a “@Facebook.com” address. This move was likely meant to be a subtle way to encourage people to use Facebook more often as an electronic messaging service, but the augmentation led to a flurry of unhappy users who took notice very quickly. Ultimately the topic began to trend in social media and spurred several posts by prominent writers...."

7 Challenges Facing Independent Filmmakers | Raindance Canada

7 Challenges Facing Independent Filmmakers | Raindance Canada | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

1. The digital revolution has flooded the marketplace

Fact: Cheaper digital production methods have helped create more product than buyers.

Strategy: Make certain your movie is genre specific. Genre is the only way that a film buyer and the marketing manager of a distribution company can quickly visualise the movie poster, trailer and marketing campaign. Never forget that distributors buy genre, not drama.

2. Online distribution is becoming commonplace

Fact: On Valentine’s Day 2005 the co-founders of Youtube.com registered the name atwww.whois.com. Youtube revolutionised film distribution and has changed the way consumers watch movies and television. The impact of illegal online distribution has also had the same impact on the film industry as it has the music industry.

Strategy: Develop a hybrid distribution strategy that encompasses traditional cinema/DVD/television releases with online distribution....

Her poem Thriller Suite also went down well with Wattpad users. "So vivid. Lurid!" wrote Saraleee. Jamilla_ wasn't sure she understood it, but liked it "all the same"....
