APPLE'S TV DREAM REVEALED: Embarrass Hardware Makers, Stiff Content Providers, Destroy Cable Companies

APPLE'S TV DREAM REVEALED: Embarrass Hardware Makers, Stiff Content Providers, Destroy Cable Companies | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

According to Atkinson's sources at the content companies, Apple's negotiating stance is as follows:

“We decide the price, we decide what content."...

They want everything for nothing.

In other words, Apple appears to be approaching content providers in the TV industry the same way it approached content providers in the music and book-publishing worlds. Namely:

Give us your content and let us package it in the way we (and consumers) want

Let us charge what we want for it

Take what we give you

Similarly, Apple is approaching TV distributors—cable companies—the same way it approached magazine and newspaper publishers. Namely:

Let us take over your relationships with your customers

Let us redesign and control the interface through which your customers get your service

Let us otherwise gradually convert you into a "dumb pipe."

Meanwhile, Apple is building a TV set that analyst Gene Munster thinks will be "the biggest thing in consumer electronics since the smartphone."

Google Glass Team: ‘Wearable Computing Will Be the Norm’

Google Glass Team: ‘Wearable Computing Will Be the Norm’ | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Even though I followed Google’s I/O Conference from across the country, the event made it obvious that a company created with a strict focus on search has become an omnivorous factory of tech products both hard and soft. Google now regards its developers conference as a launch pad for a shotgun spread of announcements, almost like a CES springing from a single company. (Whatever happened to “more wood behind fewer arrows”?)

But the Google product that threatened to steal the entire show probably won’t be sold to the public until 2014. This is the prosthetic eye-based display computer called Project Glass, which is coming out of the company’s experimental unit, Google[x]. Announced last April, it was dropped into the conference in dramatic fashion: An extravagant demo hosted by Google co-founder Sergey Brin involved skydivers, stunt cyclists, and a death-defying Google+ hangout. It quickly attained legendary status...

Director Sarah Polley Reexamines Marriage In “Take This Waltz”

Director Sarah Polley Reexamines Marriage In “Take This Waltz” | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"Whenever I go on the Scrambler, I’m lucky because that’s what they’re playing, 'Video Killed the Radio Star,'" Polley says, with complete seriousness. "I just feel that this song is a metaphor for the film. It’s about things replacing other things."

Polley’s sophomore feature film may borrow its title from the classic Leonard Cohen song but it’s The Buggles who receive the spotlight in the key scene where Margot falls for a man other than her husband Lou (Seth Rogen).

Take This Waltz borrows much from the personal life of its 33-year-old director. Toronto’s west end neighborhoods where Polley lived including Little Portugal, Little Italy, Queen West and Kensington Market and local landmarks like The Royal Cinema, Trinity Bellwoods Park and Community Centre Pool and The Lakeview Restaurant provide a working class background as Margot looks to energize her life with an affair over the course of a hot Toronto summer....

Twitter Engineering: Studying rapidly evolving user interests

Twitter Engineering: Studying rapidly evolving user interests | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

This week, we are presenting a short paper at the International Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM 2012), in which @gilad and I examine this phenomenon. An extended version of the paper, titled "A Study of 'Churn' in Tweets and Real-Time Search Queries", is available here. Some highlights:

Examining all search queries from October 2011, we see that, on average, about 17% of the top 1000 query terms from one hour are no longer in the top 1000 during the next hour. In other words, 17% of the top 1000 query terms "churn over" on an hourly basis.

Repeating this at a granularity of days instead of hours, we still find that about 13% of the top 1000 query terms from one day are no longer in the top 1000 during the next day....

Facebook Mobile Ad Performance Better on Android than iPhone cross platform campaign | Optim.al | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"Forbes’ Rob Hof shared some results that we’ve seen consistently among some of the advertisers running mobile ads on Facebook so far, namely that ad performance on Android devices is much better than on iPhone devices. Partnering with their social ads agency, TargetedSocial, Optimal delivered great results for Unilever on several mobile ad campaigns and in the process found quite divergent results for iPhone versus Android in the US. Every other advertiser we worked with saw results consistent with what was quoted in the Forbes article, namely that clickthrough rates on Android were better as were conversion rates from clicks to fans..."

“We Need A Fundamentally Different Way To Create A Brand”: An Agency CEO Sums Up The State Of Advertising

“We Need A Fundamentally Different Way To Create A Brand”: An Agency CEO Sums Up The State Of Advertising | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Bookmark this one - Excerpt:

"...Now in the life of a brand there is a continuous stream of actions every day and they all can’t try to create a huge news day for a brand. We also need to create snackable content, bits and bites--shareable, playable, postable quips that maintain our strong relationship and give the world something to talk about. In these spaces our press release technique begins to evolve into tweets-the more intimate version of a press release. Where the result can be called social currency.

And, not surprisingly, sometimes people would rather talk about themselves than our brand. So how does our brand become a vehicle or conduit for THEIR story? Our brand has to know and communicate our story but it has to also be able to tell the consumer’s story, literally. Understanding this potential for contribution is key because this may be more valuable to them than the product or service itself. That’s the future of word of mouth. Ultimately when it all comes together, real magic happens. It’s way more than an integrated campaign. It’s literally a new way to go to market, to create and grow a brand that drives powerful results....

Katniss Everdeen warrior princess: the evolution of fairytale heroines in film

Katniss Everdeen warrior princess: the evolution of fairytale heroines in film | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"Today's screen princesses have come a long way from the Disney damsels of old, but Joan of Arc still sets the bar high...

"In a study conducted at the University of Connecticut, Dawn England and Lara Descartes divvied up the screen time of all eight Disney Princess into three categories: "domestic work", "interacting with animals", and "other". They reached the following conclusions:

"Princesses performing domestic work was only portrayed in the first three princess movies and again briefly in Pocohontas. However in the first two movies it occupied a significant amount of time. Time spent interacting with animals was very prevalent in the first four movies decreased slightly in the next three, and then significantly increased in Mulan."...
