Jack Dorsey created Twitter, now he's taking on the banks with Square (Wired UK)

Jack Dorsey created Twitter, now he's taking on the banks with Square (Wired UK) | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

This article was taken from the August 2012 issue of Wired magazine.

When Jack Dorsey invented Twitter, he changed how we communicate....

Conversations with Jack Dorsey often veer into the obscure. Job interviews pivot into 30-minute disquisitions on the New York Yankees. Press briefings transform into critiques of Virginia Woolf novels. A comment about Dorsey's game-changing startup, Square -- which lets anyone accept credit cards -- triggers a lecture on the history of money. And Dorsey can be downright verbose when talking about one of his seemingly limitless obsessions -- maps, journal-keeping, perambulation, CB radio.

This tendency can become a problem for the 35-year-old, whose packed schedule would seem to afford little time for such digressions. In addition to his full-time job as CEO and unofficial chief design officer of Square -- one of Silicon Valley's hottest startups, which recently sought a valuation of $4 billion (£2.6 billion) -- he also serves as executive chair of Twitter, which launched in 2006 by springboarding off his idea that brief sneezes of communication could deepen human interaction. As the driving force behind the two startup darlings -- and as a man often mentioned as the spiritual successor to Steve Jobs -- Dorsey is in major demand...

Predicting Transmedia and Augmented Reality Futures | PERSONALIZE MEDIA

Predicting Transmedia and Augmented Reality Futures | PERSONALIZE MEDIA | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Gary Hayes, Futurist and New Media Evangelist - The media and storytelling landscape is constantly changing but in the last six years we have never seen such monumental change...

I was invited to present to a small public group last month on Media Futures up in the Northern Territory here in Australia – this followed an ABC only presentation. I generally don’t do the Futurist thing, I feel uneasy, stepping into tarot, astrology or doom sayer territory, where many factors such as user behaviour, new devices or new format/marketing development are on unpredictable shifting sands. So I prefer to call my approach to future ‘no brainer’ism’. There are some things that are so obvious, in terms of where we are heading, that simple trends analyses will give us some clarity in around a 2-5 year timeframe....

Total Recall: Personalized Rekall Videos and Comic-Con | MovieViral | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Last month, we told you about WelcomeToRekall.com, the viral website for this summer's sci-fi action remake Total Recall. The website is home to Rekall, a company that implants memories so that you can have a vacation without actually going anywhere or wasting any time. Now you can actually see how that vacation will look with personalized videos for each experience. Details after the break.

There are ten experiences to choose from, though as we explained before, the last one, “Astronaut”, actually just brings up a video of Doug Quaid (Colin Farrell) warning you about Rekall. When you choose any of the other nine experiences, you get a personalized video detailing the events of your adventure, using data from Facebook. Then, you can share the video through Twitter or Facebook, as well as enter into some pretty cool sweepstakes related to the subject matter. Check out my Secret Agent experience here. Below is a list of what you could win by participating.

Is your business using Pinterest effectively? How to measure success on the viral social media platform

Is your business using Pinterest effectively? How to measure success on the viral social media platform | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

One of the beautiful things about social media marketing is that its reach and reaction can be tracked. In comparison to direct mailings or print magazine advertisements, a business can actually count the potential customers who lay eyes on their tag lines and read over their reactions immediately, as they happen — right from their office computer screens.

With that said, it’s pointless to waste your payroll establishing a presence on a social media platform without accompanying your company efforts with a measurement plan. This is especially important when exploring Pinterest, a relatively new — and particularly segmented — platform that can do wonders for a startup’s brand and bottom line.

I asked a panel of successful young entrepreneurs the following question:

Are you (still) using Pinterest for your business — and if yes, how are you measuring if it’s working? ...

Great Analysis of Design in 'The Hunger Games' from Gehry to the 3rd Reich

Great Analysis of Design in 'The Hunger Games' from Gehry to the 3rd Reich | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

A conversation about the blockbuster film's visual references, from Nazi architecture to Frank Gehry, Depression-era photography, and everyday office furniture, but its vision of the future could have been more radical....

Alexandra Lange: ....The opening scenes in District 12 are atmospheric and period precise. The bleached-out blue palette, the wooden shacks, the muddy roads—you know you are in the 1930s of the Farm Services Administration photographers. There were a couple of moments, like the line of cabins going down into the hollow, or the two scrawny kids looking out of a hole in the wall, that I could almost swear were direct imitations of a photograph. I found out after I saw the movie that those scenes were filmed in Henry River, North Carolina, an abandoned mill town from the 1920s. In District 12, it is coal. In North Carolina, it was yarn.

Angela Riechers: The set for the Reaping was in fact an old cotton gin in Shelby, North Carolina, where we get the first visual clue hinting at the hideousness to come. The softly draped, drab cotton clothing (defenseless, helpless, defeated) worn by the District 12 kids contrasts very sharply with the architectural, brightly colored clothing (aggression, assault, dominance) worn by Effie Trinket. Her clothes are cruel. Like armor that uses harsh color and shape to intimidate....

Next Minecraft update combines single and multiplayer, adds trading and tripwires (Wired UK)

Next Minecraft update combines single and multiplayer, adds trading and tripwires (Wired UK) | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

PC world-building phenomenon Minecraft is about to get a big shakeup come August, as update 1.3 drops singleplayer, adds item trading, and introduces armfuls of new toys to play with.

"The most dramatic change is that we've kicked out single-player," writes Jens Bergensten, who became head Minecraft developer when creator Markus "Notch" Persson stepped down to work on his next game, 0x10c.

It doesn't mean you can't play by yourself, it just means that going alone is now an option in the main multiplayer experience. That makes the game easier for the developers as bug fixes only apply to one game; and modders, who won't have to make multiple version of every mod...

Louis C.K. Responds To Online Ticket Sales Experience: Scalpers’ Opinions Have Been “Enlightening” | TechCrunch | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

When Louis C.K. announced that he was selling tickets to his shows for $45, cutting out ticket middlemen entirely, the response was fairly giddy. As of this writing, he sold $6,102,000 in tickets, not a bad haul. Of those 135,600 tickets, 500 are now floating around the scalping sites.

He did, however do a little experiment: he sold two shows traditionally, through Ticketmaster and the like, and 1,100 of those tickets out of 4,400 available are already on scalping sites like Stubhub.

He writes:...
