Two Guys Made a Web Site, and This Is What They Got (TY Ingrid Kopp!)

Two Guys Made a Web Site, and This Is What They Got (TY Ingrid Kopp!) | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Four months after it started up, Upworthy, a news aggregation site built on social sharing, is gaining traction and drawing attention to content that is often ignored.

What if this article began with a link to a chart on media consolidation? Would you click it?

What if, instead, this article began with a promise that it would tell you “The Real Reason They Still Play ‘Mrs. Robinson’ on the Radio.” Would you click that?

What if they were both the same thing?

Upworthy, a news aggregation site that began publishing on March 26, is serious news built for a spreadable age, with super clicky headlines and a visually oriented user interface. Eli Pariser, the former executive director of MoveOn.org, and Peter Koechley, a former managing editor of The Onion who also worked at MoveOn, noticed that much of the media that gets shared online is built on cute animals and dumb humans that are good for a laugh, but not much else....

Meanwhile, over on Minecraft The Hunger Games are running 24/7

Meanwhile, over on Minecraft The Hunger Games are running 24/7 | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

A few weeks back, my neighbour’s 8 year old son spent almost over an hour carefully spelling out ‘Minecraft’ in foot and half high multi-coloured letters on the sidewalk in front of his and mine. When I asked him why he liked the game, he said: ‘It’s entertaining…. And it’s really good for spatial stuff and building things.’ His eyes lit up and he started describing all the things he’d built, the CN Tower, a castle, and various objects from volcanos to dynamite. Later this week he’s going to show me what he’s made and I can’t wait.

Minecraft is huge – an online game sandbox that allows anyone to build pretty much anything, developed by Markus ‘Notch’ Persson. Not only was Notch awarded the BAFTA Special Award in March 2012 for ‘significant contribution to a sector,’ Minecraft is now the best selling XBox Live Arcade game ever, with over 2 million games sold. So when a friend’s 14 year old son, Alex, told me he spent a ton of time playing in online versions of The Hunger Games built in Minecraft, I ever curious, immediately asked if he would show me...

Lovely Stop-Motion Video: The Endless Loops Of Kishi Bashi

Lovely Stop-Motion Video: The Endless Loops Of Kishi Bashi | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

If you're not already hip to the name Kishi Bashi, it's only a matter of time before you get there. The solo project from indie violinist and master sonic looper Kaoru Ishibashi (who goes by K) has been sending critics into raptures since even before the release of the debut Kishi Bashi album 151A this April. NPR's Stephen Thompson called the Virginia native's “one-man orchestra” of violin, beatboxing and English and Japanese vocals one of a few standouts from South By Southwest. The Washington Post reported at least one woman openly weeping at a Kishi Bashi concert, and Andrew Bird comparisons are already piling on like so many violin loops.

Future Shock: Bryan Singer Discusses His New Web Series, 'H+'

Future Shock: Bryan Singer Discusses His New Web Series, 'H+' | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Richard Perry/The New York Times

Bryan Singer, director of "The Usual Suspects" and "X-Men," is producing a new series, "H+," which will make its debut next month on YouTube and which tells of a not-so-far-off time in which humans are nearly wiped out by malfunctioning chips...

The day has not yet arrived where people can have microchips installed in their bodies that connect them to the Internet, then go haywire and nearly annihilate the human race. But Bryan Singer is happy to hasten that future along, even if it poses risks to the media in which he customarily operates.

Mr. Singer, the director of films including “The Usual Suspects,” “X-Men” and “Valkyrie,” is the producer of the new Web series “H+,” which will make its debut Aug. 8 on YouTube. Created by John Cabrera and Cosimo De Tommaso, “H+” tells a not-so-far-fetched story in which millions of people have communications chips installed in their bodies, and are then wiped out by a virus attacking the chips. Shuttling back and forth in time, “H+” follows the survivors of that devastation while exploring the origins of the technology that caused it....

‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and the Modern Comic Book Movie

‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and the Modern Comic Book Movie | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
The superhero movie is now a Hollywood staple, one corporations and advertisers want a piece of. But what is it selling?

...SCOTT There is something paradoxical about the modern ascendance of the superhero: world domination is what these guys were born to fight, and here they are chasing after it in a fairly literal way. Their rise is partly, like the rise of Hollywood itself, a great American success story. Back in the 1930s a bunch of writers, illustrators and entrepreneurs discovered a fertile and profitable intersection between the old pulps and the emerging youth culture. The creators of the first superheroes were outsiders — the children of immigrants or Jewish refugees from Europe — and their creations were marginal to everything respectable in the culture. Elite opinion regarded comic books as juvenile, disreputable, even dangerous, according to Dr. Fredric Wertham’s influential “Seduction of the Innocent,” which inspired Senate hearings in 1954....

Man takes virtual augmented reality girlfriend for a walk in the park | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
The proliferation of relatively cheap motion sensors in recent years, combined with development tools such as Microsoft's Kinect SDK, means that augmented reality (AR) hacks are really starting to take off. As if to showcase just what's possible with current consumer AR tech, a Japanese YouTube user has produced a video of a virtual date with computerized J-pop star Hatsune Miku....

Netflix for Magazines Comes to iPad | Media - Advertising Age

Netflix for Magazines Comes to iPad | Media - Advertising Age | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Next Issue Media's unlimited, Netflix-style service for magazine tablet editions has arrived on the iPad.

Major publishers' Netflix-like service for magazines has arrived on the iPad, putting the industry in a position to finally find out whether an all-you-can-read digital offering will help win new readers and encourage overall consumption.

The service, which comes via an app from Next Issue Media, has been on certain Android devices since April, but iPad availability will dramatically expand its reach. The app, which also sells individual subscriptions and individual issues, has fewer than 15,000 regular users so far....

Adults Crave Original Content while Tentpole Enthusiasm Wanes

Adults Crave Original Content while Tentpole Enthusiasm Wanes | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

The Austin Film Festival's film program director Stephen Jannise argues that "a new demographic is there for the taking." Using the recent success of "Moonrise Kingdom," "Bernie," "To Rome with Love," "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," "Magic Mike," "Ted" and "Beasts of the Southern Wild" as evidence, he writes that "grown-ups want to go to the movies, too, and they’re looking for something original." Sure, "The Avengers," "The Amazing Spider-Man" and in all likelihood "The Dark Knight Rises" are still tentpole moneymakers attracting the 18-25 crowd (and others), but Jannise lays out a theory as to why a new demographic is emerging and urges Hollywood to take note. It boils down to this:

Best Exotic Marigold Hotel The "Gone with the Wind" generation only went to see a new film every couple of weeks, and Hollywood gradually stopped catering to them. But now that the generation that came of age during the profitable blockbuster (i.e. "Jaws") era has grown up, Hollywood can't keep up with their programmed need to see something new every weekend. Unfortunately for studios, much of that grown-up generation has grown tired of aliens, sequels and spandex and doesn't want to pay upwards of $15 to be bombasted with it all on a regular basis. But that doesn't mean they are tired of movies;...

Role Reversal: Hulu’s Original Programming To Air On “Real” TV | TechCrunch

Role Reversal: Hulu’s Original Programming To Air On “Real” TV | TechCrunch | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Some interesting news for streaming service Hulu today: in a role reversal of sorts, the company is bringing its own original programming to television for the first time with the debut of "Spoilers" on Canada's SPACE, a sci-fi/horror/fantasy.

The show features filmmaker Kevin Smith (“Clerks”) and guests discussing their favorite summer movies. The deal also makes the show available for streaming on the TV channel’s website at SPACECAST.com.

“Spoilers” is a fun diversion for movie buffs, featuring Smith sitting with geeky entertainment idols like Damon Lindelof, who talks about his involvement in the Alien prequel Prometheus, as well as his work on “Alias” and “Lost,” for example. Other movies also fit the channel’s overall geeky vibe, with guests from Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Snow White and the Huntsman, and even a special appearance from Leia – I mean, Carrie Fisher – who talks about Star Wars (duh)...
