This past year preparing for the launch of iPads has been an interesting one for sure.

This past year preparing for the launch of iPads has been an interesting one for sure. I’ve been privileged to be able to work with amazing colleagues, students, parents, ADEs, other luminaries such as @fraserspeirs, @drdennis, @simon_elliott, @digitalroadtrip, @ostringer – it has provided yet again another brilliant learning curve for me.

I’ll go ahead and say it – I think the discussion on the iPad and Pedagogy needs to go further. Too many posts (and I am guilty of this too) focus on, “check out this cool app”, or “did you know the iPad can do this”; you’ve all seen them. I really feel we are past the time where we should be looking at the functionality of the iPad as a device and be looking at it in a way which ensures we are looking more at how learning can be redefined and modified through the use of the iPad.

@fraserspeirs wrote in his recent post following #ADE2012 institute in Cork about the next step for large educational organisations using iPads – he talks about the loss of networks (in a positive way), the changing of the school day because of how learning is changing and has changed in his environment. He goes on to talk about a point in time coming where there are no desktop machines for students anywhere as the mobile device caters for all needs. These things are great, but clearly Fraser and is well ahead of the learning curve than most. That said, we can learn a lot from his example....

Women in comics and the tricky art of equality

Women in comics and the tricky art of equality | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Selina Kyle’s lacy red bra and its ample, curvy contents fill the first panel of “Catwoman” No. 1, published last year when DC Comics relaunched 52 of its most popular titles. By the last page, she’s straddling Batman and spilling out of her leather suit once more.

Catwoman wasn’t DC’s only female superhero to make her “New 52” debut in lingerie. In “Red Hood and the Outlaws” No. 1, extraterrestrial princess Starfire strikes a Playboy-like pose, bursting out of her purple bikini as she propositions Red Hood. And Voodoo, a shape-shifting half-alien hybrid, spends half of her first issue stripping.

Comics blogs buzzed with debate, and critics cried sexism, pointing to the company’s predominantly male creative staff. DC’s rival Marvel Comics often faces similar criticism — the superhero comics genre historically has been a boys’ club....

In The Night Garden: transmedia storytelling platform for babies | Made by Many

In The Night Garden: transmedia storytelling platform for babies | Made by Many | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

A recent post by Henry Jenkins got me thinking about In The Night Garden as a Transmedia storytelling platform....

For those of you without kids or living in foreign parts, I should explain briefly. In The Night Garden, or ‘Night Garden’ as professionals like myself call it, is a BBC children’s television series aimed at one to four year olds. It launched in 2007 with 100 half-hour episodes and cost £15m. Everything in it – literally everything – is merchandised, and the show’s creators designed it specifically to plug in to the universal bedtime ritual, as Producer Anne Wood has described:

“We became very aware of the anxiety surrounding the care of young children which manifested itself in all kind of directions – but the one big subject that came up again and again was bedtime. It’s the classic time for tension between children who want to stay up and parents who want them to go to bed… so this is a programme about calming things down whereas most children’s TV is about gee-ing everything up!”

At the end of the day – and for once I really mean the actual end of the day, when Night Garden is on air – it meets a real need for parents as well. It’s basically half an hour off before ‘the final assault’....

OPINION: Why toys need stories | Toy Industry | Opinion and Analysis by ToyNews | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Starlight Runner CEO and consultant Jeff Gomez talks about the need for narrative in today's toys, in the age of multi-platform.

With the exception of a couple of Aurora models (which quickly smashed after a bit of rough play), there were no Japanese monster toys to be found in the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1969.
The sole exception was Aron, a snaggle-toothed Godzilla lookalike my mum bought me for Christmas that I treasure to this day.

Around Aron I built my Monsters League of the World: a one-armed Captain Action, a rubber turtle with a broken shell, a stuffed baby alligator missing its two front legs, and a tattered wash cloth. Their epic adventures were informed by the serious themes, ever-shifting alliances, and mind-boggling destruction I thrilled to in dozens of Toho giant monster films. The 4:30 movie may have set the tone, but my soaring five-year-old mind took care of the rest....

Five QR-Code Marketing Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Five QR-Code Marketing Mistakes and How to Fix Them | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Social Media - Five QRCode Marketing Mistakes and How to Fix Them...

Marketers remain bullish on the potential of QR codes, but a Temkin Group study in April found that only 24% of US adults are actually using them. So notes Dan Wilkerson in an article at Mashable.
According to Wilkerson, there are five common mistakes being made by QR-code marketers that are turning consumers off.

Here they are, with some suggested solutions:

Poor content. To marketers, QR codes are cheap, trackable, and easy to create. But using one costs users time and effort: They have to download an app to read it; it isn't clear what kind of info they'll unlock; and 90% of the time, the site they land on isn't optimized for mobile. Suggestion: Improve your offers. Promise a discount, the first few chapters of a book, a free drink, a video....

Daniel Clowes: The Hero Complex interview

Daniel Clowes: The Hero Complex interview | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Daniel Clowes draws lonely weirdos, sulking man-beasts, leering hipsters and human canisters for a savage ennui. They live in numbed-out neighborhoods beneath skylines of spinster gray and seasick blue. And, yes, for 25 years now, all of it has been a wonderful sight to behold.

Clowes is the guest on the latest episode of “Hero Complex: The Show,” which you can find here below or over at Chris Hardwick’s mighty Nerdist Channel on YouTube. This interview was conducted at Meltdown Comics and it veers across the considerable career of Clowes — not unlike the recently released monograph “The Art of Daniel Clowes” (Abrams ComicArts, $40) or the tie-in exhibit, “Modern Cartoonist: The Art of Daniel Clowes,” now underway at the Oakland Museum of California. ...

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious: Ten Transmedia People - Spring 2012 Edition | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

By Simon Staffans, Monday, March 19, 2012

"Transmedia is a fascinating genre, as the imagination to quite an extent is the limit of how far you can go, how far you want to reach (well, imagination… and funds… and deadlines… and manpower… and other annoying variables).

This in turn means that new examples of transmedia rise to the surface all the time. Reactions and comments, analysis and case studies abound, from a great number of creative and intelligent people. Next to creating, developing and producing myself – i.e. learning by doing – this is where I find I learn the most about transmedia; from brilliant people all around the world...."

Very Pinteresting!: The hot social network is taking educators by storm — The Digital Shift | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

...Last January, Sarah Ludwig, a tech coordinator at Hamden Hall Country Day School outside New Haven, CT, started using Pinterest to create boards for her racially and economically diverse group of about 560 preK to 12th graders.

“I use it to mostly promote books and reading,” says Ludwig. “I pin favorite books, book trailers, new books, and upcoming books we plan to buy. I also have one board for research tools and technology resources, and one board that I call ‘things to love’ that just has cute or funny things that I think our students will like.”

Since the site hasn’t taken off yet with her students, Ludwig’s primarily using it as a place to share resources. “The kids think that it’s fun and interesting, but don’t really get it yet,” she says, explaining that Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook are still her students’ top social media outlets. At the moment, Pinterest requires a Facebook or Twitter account to join, which, Ludwig says is a barrier for some kids....

The Evolution Of Batman In Popular Culture | Geeks of Doom | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Batman has become one of, if not the most well known characters in the history of American pop culture. He’s been dark, he’s been bright, and he’s even been an agent of propaganda, but one thing that has remained consistent is that people know who Batman is. With The Evolution of Batman in Popular Culture, my attempt is to take an extensive look at all the ways that Batman can be interpreted, why he’s remained a consistent force in popular culture, and how he becomes a reflection of society making him the most iconic superhero....
