Papo & Yo creator Vander Caballero talks about his unique puzzle platformer,…...

It's not every day you stumble across a video game that is, at its core, about the fear and pain of growing up with an alcoholic, abusive father. But it's just that kind of personal backstory that makes upcoming PS3 indie puzzle platformer Papo & Yo stand out among crowds of first-person shooters and throwaway casual games that seem to be the focus of much of the industry these days.

Not that the game is in your face about its message. You can play Papo & Yo and be totally unaware of the specific inspiration for the game's hulking pink monster, who can eat frogs to transform from being young protagonist Quico's best friend into an uncontrollable force of nature that is Quico's biggest threat. But creator Vander Caballero said he hopes the metaphorical beast will convey the feelings he had growing up in a house with just such an unpredictable parent.

"I just remember how afraid and how out of control I was in the world I was living in and how I couldn't do anything to save the situation even if I wanted to," Caballero said during a demonstration of the game last week. "I was just really vulnerable, and the only way I could get some control of my life was to play games and toys."...

Agility is key in an unpredictable world. Our networks, of people and data, can unlock this agility, enabling us to form novel connections, discover new opportunities, spot patterns and build teams to deliver against opportunities. They offer option value, delivering benefits that will be described as serendipitous or lucky after the event.

I was recently reminded of this latent value when IDEO ran a make-a-thon in which we brought together a diverse group of designers, developers and entrepreneurs to solve a series of challenges for social good. We tapped into our networks to convene the group to create working examples of products and services. The results, all prototyped by the end of the weekend, included a proximity-sensing bike light that frowns when cars get too close, and apps for Amnesty International to help those in danger of unlawful detention. Had we not had these eclectic networks to tap in to, we would never have managed to assemble the group, and therefore the solutions, so rapidly...

Transmedia Tuesday: The Miracle Mile Paradox - Mindhut - SparkNotes

Transmedia Tuesday: The Miracle Mile Paradox - Mindhut - SparkNotes | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

It’s been a while since Transmedia Tuesday tackled a good old alternate reality game. To remedy that, we thought we’d take a look this week at an ARG called Miracle Mile Paradox. In some ways it’s about as traditional as ARGs come (memorable character comes to the internet for help solving a weird and dangerous mystery). At the same time, it’s an object lesson in the unconventional ways that transmedia stories find their way from the imaginations of their creators to the eyeballs of their audience.

The story of Miracle Mile Paradox is pretty cool. Rexford Higgs is a collector and restorer of unusual and obsolete mechanical devices that date to the late 19th and early 20th centuries (think Steampunk fan). Back in March, Rex found a mysterious set of old blueprints for a device of uncertain design and function. In the intervening months Rex has assembled the device which turned out to be a “Time Switch” which allowed him to receive communications from the past. Seems like things are working out pretty well for old Rex, right?...

Soon, space robots like Curiosity may evolve even greater intelligence | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
This post is part of a series produced by Singularity University.
After more than eight years of planning and a 254-day journey through the cold emptiness of space, NASA’s Curiosity rover has finally landed on Mars. Curiosity is the most advanced mobile robotic science lab to ever explore another planet and thus this is an exciting moment for NASA and the world.

But robotics and artificial intelligence continue to advance at an exponential rate. As we look towards the future of space exploration in the next decade and beyond, we can expect the next generation of space robots to be orders of magnitude more powerful and intelligent, while at the same time costing a fraction of Curiosity’s $2.5 billion price tag....

Co-funded by the CMF (Canada Media Fund) and Sony’s Pub Fund scheme, Papo & Yo is a platform-based video game with a twist: it is inspired by its creator’s difficult childhood. It notably features a monster which is addicted to frogs, and who goes mad if he eats too many. The parallel with an alcoholic father does not however limit the game’s playability, as creator Vander Cabellero explains to Ars Technica here. Papo & Yo is set to be released on the PlayStation Network mid-August

NBC's 'Grimm' Embraces the Second Screen [EXCLUSIVE]

NBC's 'Grimm' Embraces the Second Screen [EXCLUSIVE] | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
NBC Publishing and NBC Entertainment announced on Tuesday the release of a free interactive companion to the hit new drama, Grimm.

Grimm: The Essential Guide will give fans entrée to exclusive “behind-the-scenes” content, including concept art, 3D renderings and video clips. The eBook will also offer a season 1 recap and a teaser trailer for season 2, including the introduction of a terrifying new creature.

All of this content comes just in time for viewers to whet their palates before the second season premiere on Monday.

NBC Publishing hopes that the ebook won’t just provide a supplement to the show, but will create an “entirely new ‘second-screen’ experience.” The company hopes to pave the way for television interactivity, and “bridge the gap between fan and screen.”

The Grimm interactive companion follows a growing trend of second screen ebooks. Last month, TNT launched a free interactive book through Apple’s iBookstore to accompany the fourth season of Leverage. According to the show’s executive producer and director, Dean Devlin, TNT is hoping to publish iBook companions for every season thus far...

Humanizing corporations with social media | ParkHowell.com | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

August 6th, 2012

The book, Humanize: How People-Centric Organizations Succeed in a Social World demonstrates how cold, industrialized companies are winning with social media.

Command and control. It is one of the lasting corporate legacies of the industrial age. But its grip is weakening. For 100 years, most American companies have approached corporate culture with a cold, mechanized hand. Just look at the Dilbert cartoons tacked on faceless cubicles, and you’ll see the Post-it cries for help from the people caught in this dystopian world.

However, like the famous quote from Dr. Ian Malcom in Jurassic Park, “Life finds a way.”...

£64 million investment to help Realtime develop 'live web' (Wired UK)

£64 million investment to help Realtime develop 'live web' (Wired UK) | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
A company aiming to give the world "a whole new era of the internet" with real-time web browsing has received a £64 million investment plug to help it build a US presence.

Realtime, which has been operating under the unassuming name Internet Business Technologies since 1997, is talking about providing a "bi-directional", cloud-based platform where web users no longer have to refresh their browsers and companies can track customers' movements in real-time -- or, as the site promises, in just a few milliseconds. As an added bonus, not constantly having to manually push data also means saving on bandwidth costs.

Speaking about how the company mission came about, chief executive Andre Parreira said he referred to the hackers' ethos: "What can I do to be disruptive?"

"I saw that the internet is based on a 30-year old protocol -- it's still request-response, so it's static. It's not delivering on the promise that the internet will give us a true interactive experience. So, [I thought], let's create the live web." The conclusion may sound flippantly devised, but Realtime has tackled the challenge head-on and, so far seems to have achieved just what it set out to.....

Randy Finch asks: Will the internet free motion pictures from the old ways of telling stories?

Randy Finch asks: Will the internet free motion pictures from the old ways of telling stories? | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

By Randy Finch

In 1958 the most influential film critic of his day, André Bazin, wrote that the 19th century invention of photography had brought with it “a great spiritual and technical crisis” that profoundly affected other arts – in particular painting.

After the invention of the camera, the burden of what Bazin called “duplicating the world outside” was snatched away from painters and handed to photographers.

Here’s how Bazin describes what happened next: Photography “freed Western painting, once and for all, from its obsession with realism.”

In other words, André Bazin argued that modern painting – with its emphasis on abstraction – would not have existed without photography.

While some painters saw opportunity and pursued non- representational art in the late 1800s, many Old World painters were not happy. Similarly, these days many established professionals are not happy that their accustomed role in motion picture storytelling is being usurped by cellphone-wielding “amateurs.”

But (then as now) the Old Guard’s contempt has never stopped tech- savvy entrepreneurs from coming up with better ways to serve fundamental human needs (like storytelling)…

New Transmedia Project, The Numinous Place, Aims To Change Fiction

New Transmedia Project, The Numinous Place, Aims To Change Fiction | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

A new transmedia project called 'The Numinous Place' is trying to raise money on Kickstarter. It already has one famous backer: the actor Russell Crowe, who has apparently invested $25,000 in the project.

It's the brainchild of Mark Staufer, an old friend of Crowe's and the screenwriter of the forthcoming movie directed by Crowe about comedian Bill Hicks, "Love, Laughter, Truth."

Originally from New Zealand, Staufer now lives in Los Angeles, and describes this project, which he's been working on for four years, as "a new way of storytelling."

"We'll be using video, audio, fake security camera footage, fake newspapers - all of this will have more of a visceral impact than words on a page. If you're presenting evidence that looks and smells and feels real, then the readers are going to believe it."

The narrative is a "cosmic detective story," and it will center around a multi-platform ebook app that contains audio and video components.

It will also include elements to assist lucid dreaming, which is the ability to control your own dreams. This aspect is reminiscent of the lucid dreaming app that accompanied the movie Inception. The project's consultant is lucid dreaming expert Rory Mac Sweeney.

The Numinous Place's website describes the project as "the world's first truly multidimensional work of fiction."...

Facebook allows U.K. developer to launch real-money gambling app on platform

Facebook allows U.K. developer to launch real-money gambling app on platform | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Online gambling company Gamesys today launches Bingo Friendzy for Facebook, the first casino title to incorporate real-money play on the social network.

Real-money gambling is illegal in the U.S., but if Facebook allows more of these games in other countries, it could be a significant source of payments revenue. Facebook reported $192 million in revenue from games and other payments in the second quarter of 2012, but that was only a 3.6 percent increase from the same period in 2011.

Unlike in the U.S., gambling is a part of the U.K. culture and it’s comparatively easy to operate an online gambling site/app on a global scale. Last month, Christopher Griffin told our sister blog Inside Social Games that his real-money gaming platform Betable is able to operate worldwide because the company’s servers are in the U.K. and the country’s laws allow them to operate anywhere in the world, except in those nations where online gambling is explicitly forbidden....

4Chan is often known as the birth place of memes, ridiculous inside jokes that people share on the Internet that most people probably attribute to Reddit these days. The site is credited with creating such historic memes as Rick Rolling and LoLcats. It started as a place for people to share manga and anime in 2003, but slowly evolved into an anything goes forum, with various channels that have their own rules of conduct. User posts are mostly anonymous, and the various community channels stay pretty active.

So, what was the billionth post? 4Chan said it isn’t sure, but suggested that people use their imagination.

For the past month, Transmedia LA has been running an alternate-reality game out of Los Angeles’ Miracle Mile as a Kickstarter-funded experiment in game development for its members. The game centers around the Time Switch, a device that receives transmissions from the past.

By Brandie Minchew, originally posted at ARGNet

Something very strange happened to Rexford Higgs back in March. An aficionado of wondrous artifacts and things from bygone days, Rex uncovered by chance a set of blueprints for a strange device, hidden in a tin box in a construction site near LA’s Miracle Mile. Fascinated by his find, Rex launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the building of his Time Switch. This campaign was used by Transmedia L.A. to serve as the real-world Kickstarter campaign to fund Rexford Higgs’ story as an alternate reality game, The Miracle Mile Paradox.
