YoYo Games builds monetization & analytics services into its game development tools

YoYo Games builds monetization & analytics services into its game development tools | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
YoYo Games is making it easy to tap monetization and analytics services from within its cross-platform game development tools.

YoYo Games hopes to revolutionize the way that game developers make money from their games by making it easy to tap monetization and analytics services from within its cross-platform game development tools.

The integration of new services is part of a plan to promote GameMaker: Studio, the company’s cross-platform game development tool which it sells to developers, as a lingua franca for making games. Those tools make it easy to publish games on any platform and have them run at native performance speeds. That is, the games can run as if they were authored specifically to run on that particular platform. On top of this cross-platform advantage, Dundee, Scotland-based YoYo Games also says it has taken the hassle out of adopting monetization and analytics services.

Now it’s a simple matter for developers to choose different monetization options and publish their games to a variety of app stores. That makes the process of making money from games more accessible, efficient and scalable than ever before. It effectively lowers the barriers that stand in the way of making money on games....

Alt-Minds and the promise of 'transmedia' - Paris Developer bets on gaming

Alt-Minds and the promise of 'transmedia' - Paris Developer bets on gaming | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Maybe we're wrong about the future of games. While those of us in the traditional industry wonder whether it's all going to be about next-gen consoles or smartphones or tablets, maybe it's going to be none of them – or more accurately, perhaps it will be all of them together.

'Transmedia' is not a new phrase. The idea of combining linear content such as TV or web movies, with interactive elements delivered on phones and across the internet has been around for over a decade. In 2001, EA released its agenda-setting alternate reality game (ARG) Majestic, which used emails and even phone calls to draw players into a multiplatform conspiracy game. At the same time, TV and movie producers started to see the possibilities of using ARGs to market and build communities around key franchises – hence The Beast, a web game based around the film AI and The Lost Experience, which added depth and (even more) ambiguity to JJ Abrams' Lost series.

Things have been relatively quiet recently, with many media giants preferring more conventional communication streams like Twitter and Facebook. However, launching this autumn could be one of the most ambitious transmedia concepts since Heroes creator Tim Kring launched his Conspiracy for Good two years ago....

Women in games: A mini guide to working and thriving in the video game industry

Women in games: A mini guide to working and thriving in the video game industry | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Grazie! Lorraine Hopping for the fantastic share:

Current TV's Daniela Capistrano interviewed women in the video game industry to share their career advice.

'...Six tips to help you attain your dream job

Designer. Programmer. Developer. Producer. Artist. You might be familiar with these roles, but if they don’t appeal to you, there are others — you can still have a career in video games.

1. Be curious and optimize your distractions.

“I always let myself be curious — even get distracted — when something moves me. I follow blogs on strange photography, infinity and fractals, bizarre fashion trends, things that foster different emotions. When I design, I always start with emotions, sensations, revelations — what do I want players to feel, see, learn? I love paradox and juxtaposition, anything that forces your brain to think in a new way or make unexpected connections. I love going out to quiet places — parks and natural settings. Whenever my throat gets tight — something literally takes my breath away — then I know I should capture or try to understand it. Good game design revolves around creating evocative experiences.“ —Chelsea Howe, director of design at SuperBetter Labs...'

MIT Media Lab: Learning Through Connecting

MIT Media Lab: Learning Through Connecting | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

TUESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2012

Much of the discussion about educational technology these days focuses on new ways to deliver instruction, through online videos and online courses. In our Lifelong Kindergarten research group at the Media Lab, we have a very different approach to education and learning, developing technologies not to deliver instruction but to open opportunities for people to create, collaborate, experiment, and express themselves. With our Scratch programming software, for example, young people can create their own interactive stories, games, animations, and simulations, then share their creations with one another online. In the process, young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively – essential skills in today’s society.

Last week, we had an opportunity to see how this learning approach is taking root in different parts of the world, as we hosted our third Scratch@MIT conference. More than 400 educators, researchers, and developers from 31 countries came to the Media Lab for four days to share stories, plans, and visions about Scratch....

How Women Lead Differently, And Why It Matters. Let's start with 52% of global population..

How Women Lead Differently, And Why It Matters. Let's start with 52% of global population.. | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

I think it's time women have a candid conversation about power. It's a conversation that will impact men and needs to include them. Together, we've reached a population of 7 billion; in another 38 years, we'll rise to 9 billion. Women make up 52 percent of the global whole and control $20 trillion in annual consumer spending. Our decisions have a measurable impact on local businesses, regional economies, and the transnational marketplace. How we choose to conceive and exert power as a group has the potential to define the 21st century.

In recent years, we've seen calls for accountability, fairness, and openness galvanize revolutionary movements and thinking. Long-held assumptions about who has power have been radically disrupted by technology and the culture of a digitally native generation. Influence isn't just wielded from the corner office anymore--influence is wired, it's mobile, it's six thousand miles away, being transmitted via Twitter.

Many of us are living in an age of virtual access and virtual freedom, but we can't ignore that there's a tension between the instant connectivity that technology makes possible for all people and the reality of economic and social inequities that continue to alienate and disadvantage most people. Less than one third of the world's population has access to the Internet. Three out of four people living in absolute poverty--less than $1 a day--are in rural areas.

We've created a hyperconnected world where the vast majority is removed from systems that shape their daily reality. The mass unrest that delivered us the Occupy Movement and the Arab Spring shares a common element: a sense of disempowerment....

It’s not what you know, but who you know … Fiona Milburn, Guest Post | Transmedia NZ | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Audience Engagement is a key concept in transmedia storytelling. As Anna Jackson points out in What the # is transmedia?, transmedia offers “media creators an approach to making content that allows us to connect with audiences in meaningful ways across different platforms, to provide richer media experiences that fit with the way that we, as audiences, engage with media in our daily lives.”

But, audience engagement is also playing a significant part in the funding of creative works. It is now quite common for practitioners, of all kinds, to run a crowdfunding campaign as part of their overall media financing strategy. As Helen Baxter (MsBehaviour) says in Million Dollar Ideas “describing a crowdfunding campaign as an ‘event’ is apt as it gives people an experience, souvenirs, memories, and something to talk about.”...

Capture Ghosts at Foursquare Spots With 'Ghostbusters' iOS Game by Toronto's XMG Studios | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

'Ghostbusters: Paranormal Blast' uses alternate reality to bring ghosts to life around players for them to capture....

When you load the app, you’ll see Foursquare locations around you that have been “haunted” by ghosts. Click on one, and a ghost will appear in front of you on your phone’s display. They don’t just sit idly by; these ghosts are feisty, and will attack you while you zap them with your Proton Pack. You’ll have to move your phone or iPad to keep the ghosts on the screen — which makes you look a bit silly in the process — as they track to different parts of your camera to avoid capture. Once the ghost is weakened, slide your Ghost Trap beneath them to add them to your collection....

Brilliant. Beck 'Produces' A Genius Innovation That Appeals To The User-Generated Generation - Forbes | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Beck has an invitation for you (Photo credit: Matt Biddulph)

There are times when I see an idea that is so good, so fresh, so amazing that I:

1. Become immediately proud to be human.

2. Stand up to let the energy of the idea fill my body.

3. Tell everyone I know about it.

From the promo site:

“In the wake of Modern Guilt and The Information, Beck’s latest album comes in an almost-forgotten form—twenty songs existing only as individual pieces of sheet music, never before released or recorded.”

Sheet music. Nothing but sheet music.

Think about the implications of that idea in this modern age of digital information, content creation, sharing, and social communities....

An End-around On The Pirating Business.

Here’s the most brilliant part of the idea, and the part that appeals to the marketer in me. You can’t just download this album, you have to buy it. It’s not digital, it’s paper. Beck has successfully found a loophole in our digital addictions. A loophole that will find musicians and non-musicians alike wanting to purchase such a novelty, either to play the music privately, publicly, or simply to follow along while listening to the world bring the music to life.....

TFI Interactive: Finding Storytelling Inspiration Across Industries | Future of Film | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Tribeca Film Institute’s Director of Digital Initiatives leads an insightful video tour of the inaugural TFI Interactive, a one-day event that brought together creative, smart leaders from the worlds of media, entertainment, education and technology.

While developing the TFI New Media Fund, a program the Tribeca Film Institute launched last year to support interactive, non-fiction projects with the support of the Ford Foundation, I realized that I was increasingly looking outside of the film industry for inspiration and to gauge where things were headed in terms of new forms of storytelling and new ways of connecting with audiences. I thought it would be interesting to create an event that could focus on some of the people and ideas that were guiding my thinking in this space.

Together with XO Labs from the U.K., who were running a lab for the Tribeca Film Institute’s inaugural New Media Fund grantees, we put together TFI Interactive during the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival. This became a one-day event that brought together leading practitioners from the fields of media, entertainment, education and technology to share their insights...
