Love.. When Entertainment Marketing Is Art: See Work From The Breaking Bad Art Project

Love.. When Entertainment Marketing Is Art: See Work From The Breaking Bad Art Project | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
The story of Walter White, your favorite high school chem teacher turned meth kingpin, will come to a close when Breaking Bad ends its series run in 2013.

"Breaking Bad is really art in itself," says Jensen Karp, co-owner of pop culture-inclined Gallery1988, who’s Breaking Bad-themed art show opened on August 20th. "I look at the episodes the same way I look at museum and gallery shows. Each piece of dialogue or moment has been selected for a certain reason and it’s just so good. Vince Gilligan has created a show that can be celebrated with others’ creativity, and that is very rare for TV."

During the lead-up to its fifth season premiere this past July, Breaking Bad's creativity was celebrated chiefly through BreakingGifs.com, a site fronted by comedian Paul Scheer. BreakingGifs.com turned out to be more than just an outpost for animated images of Jesse Pinkman as Nyan Cat, though. The site was the centerpiece of a larger campaign; the GIFs acted as clues which sent fans out on a digital and physical scavenger hunt leading to 16 prints by top artists and graphic designers, depicting moments from the show....

JK Rowling's Wonderbook 'Book of Spells': Future of Books or Gaming Prop? | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

The Book of Spells is the first in the series of titles for Sony’s “Wonderbook” which claims to be the “reinvention of the storybook” It does look like a book but the similarity ends there.  First of all, when you open it, instead of normal text, you’d find this (see above).

“The closest a Muggle can come to a real spell book”, JK Rowling

No, the images above are not magical Runes- the cryptic language of wizards, but very much the technology of “muggles” that brings magic close to reality. These are augmented reality codes overlaid on the book pages that are detected by the PlayStation eye (the webcam device for the PlayStation)which in turn displays the actual content of the page on your TV screen.Would you call holding the book in hand and staring into the TV as “reading”?...

‘Cloud Atlas’ Author Mitchell Mobbed in Shanghai by Fans Shouting: Sign! Sign!

‘Cloud Atlas’ Author Mitchell Mobbed in Shanghai by Fans Shouting: Sign! Sign! | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
"Cloud Atlas" author David Mitchell was chased by fans through the streets of Shanghai on a recent visit to the city. Why is he so popular in China?

Now, in China, too, social media is fanning the flames of the “Cloud Atlas” craze, helping Mr. Mitchell’s feed on Sina Corp.’s Weibo microblogging website rack up 35,000 followers in its first week.

Why is the book so popular in China?

According to one fan, 32-year old designer Li Wei Gang, the appeal of “Cloud Atlas” lies in its melding of contemporary British literature with themes that resonate in China.

“The younger generation in China wants to understand better what young British people are seeking, what they care about, what they read,” says Li. “Then there is a kind of spirit of transmigration in the book, which is an Asian thing that is also in accordance with what Chinese believe.”...

Big surprise: Hulu’s owners can’t agree on its future

Big surprise: Hulu’s owners can’t agree on its future | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
A leaked memo hints at an uncertain future for Hulu after a buyout of co-owner Providence Equity Partners. Not only could CEO Jason Kilar leave the company, but Hulu’s co-owners News Corp. and Disney don’t seem to see eye-to-eye on key issues.

Hulu’s corporate parents are set to buy out their co-owner Providence Equity Partners by September, and the deal could trigger numerous changes to the site, according to a Variety report that’s based on a leaked memo obtained by the publication.

One consequence: Hulu CEO Jason Kilar could be set to cash out up to $100 million in equity – and that windfall seems to worry News Corp. and Disney, who both own close to 30 percent of the company. The media conglomerates seem to fear that Kilar could jump ship, and the memo obtained by Variety seems to indicate that they’re working on contingency plans (Comcast also owns roughly a third of Hulu, but doesn’t have any direct influence on the company’s future due to conditions for its merger with NBC Universal)....

5 Reasons Why Web Publishing is Changing (Again)

5 Reasons Why Web Publishing is Changing (Again) | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

We're witnessing another sea change in Web publishing. From Pinterest at the beginning of this year to the launch this week of a new product from two Twitter founders, Medium, 2012 has been a year where the norms of publishing are being challenged. It wasn't that long ago that Tumblr and Wordpress were the cutting edge of publishing. But there's a new edge and it's populated by the likes of Medium (a kind of categorized Tumblr), Branch (the sister site of Medium, for discussions), App.net (a microblogging platform) and Svbtle (an elite network of indie bloggers). In this post we identify five key drivers for this new wave of publishing services.

1. Publishing Is Getting More Casual

One thing that all of the four tools I mentioned above - Medium, Branch, App.net and Svbtle - have in common is that they make the publishing process less onerous. It's now less about composition (being a writer or blogger) and more about expressing your thoughts as simply as possible. Branch encourages you to "be casual" when adding your opinion to a discussion, while Medium wants to remove "the burden of becoming a blogger"....

So So So WANT. In Situ. Dickens: Dark London App | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
The Literary Platform is dedicated to showcasing projects experimenting with literature and technology. It brings together comment from industry figures and key thinkers, and encourages debate.

Charles Dickens’ descriptions of Victorian London have, for over a century, formed an authoritative representation of the city and its inhabitants. It’s with some trepidation, then, that we approach this Museum of London-sponsored app, which augments Dickens’ words with visuals to form an “interactive graphic novel”. Can it hope to enhance an experience that has already withstood the test of years?

Somehow, it manages – not least because the images are based on those Dickens produced himself, working under the pseudonym “Boz”. Actor Mark Strong narrates Dickens’ words over suitably grimy interpretations of Boz’s illustrations, which are arranged into comic-style pages. Hotspots allow the reader to access historical trivia and references, while a panel-view mode helps you zoom in on details even when using a smaller screen...

Content is king: Still true in the mobile era? | Socialmedia.biz

Content is king: Still true in the mobile era? | Socialmedia.biz | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

...So, what is a proper mobile presence?

Web apps vs. native apps

There are two basic terms you need to know before I can answer this question:

• Web app – changing the layout of the information (still in HTML) in a way that is more suited for a mobile screen. The new layout can be attributed to a dedicated design template, or (if we didn’t throw around enough buzz-words so far) to a “responsive design” that takes into account the width of the screen on which it is presented and rearranges the elements in the layout to fit the screen.

To be fair, Steve Jobs said: “You don’t need apps, make Web apps.” After saying that, he realized that making apps is not where the tech world was going, and he created the App Store and billions of downloads have confirmed that this move was the right way to go.

• Native app – a dedicated app written in the original programming language of the mobile platform. This process creates the best results possible for an app.

There is a lively discussion on what is the best approach to adapt the Internet into the mobile world: Web app (because it is probably enough and it is after all the language of the Internet) or native apps (because of their strength and speed)....

The Facebook-Instagram deal is now worth just $738 million

The Facebook-Instagram deal is now worth just $738 million | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

The Instagram-Facebook deal was eye-popping at its announced $1 billion valuation. However, that figure was calculated based on a price of Facebook's stock that was, in fact, lower than the price that the company would finally first sell stock: $38.

Boston.com reported that at the $38 per share figure, the deal was valued at $1.17 billion. That’s a simple one to sort: $300 million in cash, plus 22,999,412 shares of Facebook stock at $38 a piece. Here’s the math, if you want to run the figures yourself.

As TNW reported some time after Facebook’s IPO, when its stock was at $29.42, the total value of the deal had slipped under the $1 billion mark. That was something to ponder. That’s child’s play compared to where we are now...

How Online Reading Is Changing - And How to Cope!

How Online Reading Is Changing - And How to Cope! | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Yesterday we outlined five reasons why Web publishing is undergoing a sea change, via new services like Medium, Branch, Svtle and App.net. In today's post, we turn our attention to the readers. We're all readers, in some capacity. So the changes we're witnessing in publishing affect us all. Here's what it will mean to you and how you can adapt.

The Rise of Gated Communities

One of the curious factors in the new wave of publishing services is that they are restrictive in nature. In all four of the services we mentioned - Medium, Branch, Svtle and App.net - you cannot write to them unless you have been given permission to do so. Essentially, they're read-only by default. In other words, this new crop of services is less democratic than what came before - Tumblr, Wordpress, Blogger and even Twitter.

The reason why they're restricting access is because of a drive for quality. Rightly or wrongly, these companies have decided to tackle the Quality problem by creating gated communities. Most of us can peek through the bars of the gate and read the posts. But unless you've been granted access to come inside, you're effectively discouraged from joining the conversation.

Over time Medium, Branch, App.net and others will open their gates to more people, but you have to wonder what advantages those with early access are gaining...

What is the future of storytelling? Immersion, interactivity, integration and impact | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
As consumer technology evolves at an ever-quickening pace, opportunities for new forms of storytelling are emerging. Experimentation is all well and good, but what do audiences actually want? To answer this question, research group Latitude has interviewed 158 early adopters and compiled a report that forms the first phase of its The Future of Storytelling project.

Unsurprisingly, these early adopters are keen to take advantage of everything that technology has to offer. Their key demands are summarized in Latitude’s report as ‘The 4 I’s': Immersion, Interactivity, Integration and Impact. Essentially, they want to be able to explore a story in greater depth, and have it reach out of the confines of a single medium and play out in ‘the real world’....

Alt-Minds and the promise of 'transmedia' (bookmarking August 10 2012)

Alt-Minds and the promise of 'transmedia' (bookmarking August 10 2012) | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Keith Stuart: The term 'transmedia' has been derided in the past, but a Parisian developer reckons it may be the future of gaming, and Alt-Minds is the first instalment...

Developed by French studio, Lexis Numérique, Alt-Minds is a conspiracy thriller about the abduction of several young scientists. When the government shows little interest in their retrieval, their agency decides to investigate itself. The main narrative will be told via ten weekly 'webisodes', but players will also be able to subscribe to a newsfeed on their PC or tablet, providing background information and updates.

"But you can go much further," says spokesperson, Djamil Kemal. "The Agency needs your help. To make it smooth, they distribute an app, available both on you PC and your tablet, that lets you take part in the investigation. You can receive the video logs and documents of the field investigators and help them progress. For instance, you can use the Agency's tools to analyse a picture, enhance a video and zoom in it to find a clue and much more."

From here, wannabe detectives will be able to scour the web for clues, using Facebook, Google Earth and the websites of fictitious organisations as research tools – all the while earning XP. "You can even receive emails from some of the characters," says Kemal. "And if you agree, you can even be contacted by SMS. You find a character's phone number? Try to call him and see if he answers. Those who are really hooked will even be able to look for clues in the real world via smartphone-based geolocalized missions."...
