Why censoring social media might mean more-violent protests

Why censoring social media might mean more-violent protests | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
According to a couple of European researchers, governments that try to limit access to the Internet or social media during civil unrest can expect to see higher overall levels of violence with fewer calm periods than can governments that keep the...

..The authors attribute their findings (albeit computer-generated) largely to the idea of “vision,” which plays a pivotal role in sociological experiments trying to determine how individuals act during times of protest or rioting. Put simply, less censorship means more vision, so citizens (called “agents” in the computer model) know what’s going on around them and can act in more uniform and rational manners. More censorship means less vision, so citizens are less aware of their surroundings and tend to act randomly.

View Your Twitter & Facebook Feed As A Star Wars Intro Scroll

View Your Twitter & Facebook Feed As A Star Wars Intro Scroll | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

For a while, I was using TweetDeck as my main client for tweeting and retweeting.....

....These Twitter client giants aren’t the only ones on the market. So, I set out to see if I could find something a little bit more creative, and boy did I find something. I actually found a way to view my Facebook and Twitter feeds in the style of the Star Wars intro! Yup, that is right, and it’s called Kinect Star Wars. It’s an app available to all major smartphone users. The Android and iPhone version were released on the 19th, so just head over to the app store and grab it. It’s actually Star Wars with an accompanying Facebook or Twitter feed reader.

How cool is it to see those tweets fly by like a boss while you are twittering away your most personal information? It’s definitely the cool of the day, and I am sure we’ll see a lot more of these apps if this one become the success it’s destined to be. It’s exactly what I have been waiting for, a more creative way to use my Twitter or Facebook instead of being locke

Has Cable TV Taken the Place of the Mid-Budget Indie?

Has Cable TV Taken the Place of the Mid-Budget Indie? | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

In May, it was announced that one of the most buzzed-about new filmmakers, Sean Durkin, would be shopping a TV series based on "The Exorcist" as his next project. Durkin’s debut feature "Martha Marcy May Marlene" was the indie to see in 2011, but the news that he was following it up with a move to the small screen didn't come as much of a surprise.

Plenty of artistically gifted filmmakers who would in the past have focused on making mid-range arty indies have been shifting instead to the more domestic medium. Last year there was Todd Haynes’ "Mildred Pierce" miniseries; Lena Dunham’s comedy "Girls" and Noah Baumbach’s attempted "The Corrections" series followed not long after. More recently, Cary Fukunaga (of "Sin Nombre") signed on to direct a detective show with Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. (Of course, these are all HBO projects -- more about the other networks momentarily.)

Why the turn to TV? Primarily, it's because these talents are looking for stability rather than uncertainty -- the budgets they require to make ambitious work while retaining enough creative control. Indie filmmaking in the realm of $2-$15 million pictures has become a bit of a ghost town, for all the reasons of that you, dear reader, are surely aware -- fewer mini-major distributors, a declining market share for movies in general, digital piracy on the rise, and so ont...

Oakland Innovation Film Lab – Youth Mobile Media Workshop | Edspace

Oakland Innovation Film Lab – Youth Mobile Media Workshop | Edspace | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

by Robyn Bykofsky I have been facilitating media literacy and video production workshops with Bay Area youth and educators for over 12 years and the Youth Film Lab was the experience of a lifetime. It was the first workshop I taught in which teens produced and edited their videos within 4.5 hours and then an hour later screened the videos to a live audience at the Oakland School of the Arts Black Box Theater. How did we accomplish this task?

First, we had a talented and motivated group of 14 teens from all over Oakland. Second, TILT (the youth media program at Ninth Street Independent Film Center) and Disposable Film Festival (DFF) crafted an action-packed curriculum that had the teens on the flip cameras right away. Teens were able to express themselves in the hands-on video activity When People See Me. This effective icebreaker allowed the teens to quickly get to know each other and therefore they were ready to jump into a brief discussion about using mobile media for social action and change....

Chris Hecker wants to save video games from a comic book fate (Wired UK)

Chris Hecker wants to save video games from a comic book fate (Wired UK) | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Are video games synonymous with violence, and does it matter if they are?...

...I wrote previously about how the violence in SpyParty felt different to other games. Hecker underlined this for me, talking about how "as soon as the violence happens the game is over, it's the threat of violence that makes the game tense". Still, his daughter found the moment of decision, when the sniper pulls the trigger too intense. This led Hecker to consider putting in an arrest (rather than execute) mode.

But why would you want a child to play this sort of game in the first place? Well for me Hecker hit the nail on the head as he explained the underlying ethic of SpyParty. "One of the aesthetic goals of the game is for the sniper to make consequential decisions on partial information." I love the way this kind of thinking relates to a whole range of different aspects of life and is certainly something I'd like my kids to grapple with. So often they want to know all the information before committing -- overly concerned with making the right choice...
