ScreenWest - ScreenWest takes lead in innovative grant allocation initiative

ScreenWest - ScreenWest takes lead in innovative grant allocation initiative | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

25 July 2012
In an Australian first, filmmakers and digital creatives in Western Australia will be encouraged to raise funds through online crowdfunding, as part of the new ‘3 to 1' initiative developed by ScreenWest and Pozible, Australia's biggest crowdfunding platform for creative projects. ScreenWest will offer three dollars in funding for every one dollar raised by creative teams. The $250,000 pool of ScreenWest funds will be distributed on a ‘first past the post' basis, with teams required to raise between $5000 and $50,0000 to secure ScreenWest support.

Creative teams are encouraged to produce narrative screen projects for online audiences - from innovative, interactive projects, to web series and short dramas, through to documentaries or animation.

With the funding not restricted to projects which have a traditional distribution or broadcasting deal, ‘3 to 1' is open to both emerging and established practitioners.

The funding will be available for projects with total budgets ranging from $20,000 to $200,000. Under the initiative, teams will be expected to raise a quarter of their total budget themselves. ScreenWest will contribute from a minimum of $15,000 to a maximum of $150,000 per project...

This Week in Kickstarter: Where They Are Now [very useful post] | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Last spring, filmmaker Alison Klayman launched a project to raise finishing funds for a documentary she was making about the Chinese activist and artist, Ai Weiwei. The course of her project witnessed much more than funding success, though — as world events, including the Beijing Olympics, saw the world turn an increasingly inquisitive eye on China, Ai Weiwei's profile as an outspoken dissident skyrocketed, and awareness of the film rose in tandem. Today, bolstered by a warmly received premiere at Sundance, the completed documentary opens at theaters all across the country. Early acclaim is high, with the pictures deemed a critic's pick by New York Magazine, an A by Entertainment Weekly, and "stark, beautiful, haunting" by the New York Times. A full listing of showtimes and theaters is available on her site....

Augmented Reality: Beyond Usability with Flow and Narrative Transportation — Dr. Pamela Rutledge

Augmented Reality: Beyond Usability with Flow and Narrative Transportation — Dr. Pamela Rutledge | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Usability is no longer a differentiator. Designers and developers must elevate usability to engagement. Neuroscientific findings show that the 3-brain model is a powerful rule of thumb for design and marketing decisions.

Augmented reality describes the process of using technology to overlay virtual information onto the real world to ‘augment,’ or add value, to our experience. Augmented reality applications are unique in that because they project virtual information into a user’s physical environment, they effectively blend real and virtual. They are also increasingly mobile and social. These features amplify the level of impact and persuasive power of the user experience — when done right.

All kinds of things go into success. And you might argue that usability is the key. But at the highest level, success depends on more than usability; it depends upon user experience. User experience is more than all those things combined. Of course, you still need to follow best practices for good usability because if people can’t do something they can’t be persuaded by it. But usability is no longer a key differentiator. It’s not enough....

The Amazing Origin Stories of 5 Great Films | Film School Rejects

The Amazing Origin Stories of 5 Great Films | Film School Rejects | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

This content series is in partnership with smartwater.

Where do movies come from? At the risk of sounding like Lucas from Empire Records (although “What’s with today, today?” is a perfectly valid question), there’s something genuinely incredible about the spark that leads to a multi-million dollar piece of art, crafted by thousands of people that a massive audience can enjoy.

Someone reads a book or hears a story or finds an old family heirloom in a basement. Someone wants to recognize a figure that made a profound impact on our world. Someone stumbles across an old idea or has a Eureka Moment in the shower. It all gets put through the ringer and ends up as the only source of light in a darkened room.

So, yes, there’s a magic to it all. Movies take their ideas from anywhere and everywhere (including other works of art and other movies). To celebrate that, here are five great films made just a bit more incredible by exploring where they come from.

Back to the Basement...

The Valtari Mystery Film Experiment - Sigur Ros' 6th Album goesTransmedia

The Valtari Mystery Film Experiment - Sigur Ros' 6th Album goesTransmedia | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Transmedia "in the way" of Icelandic Post-Rock Musicians To those who know what Valtari is, this post won't be even a little bit new to them (or maybe it will...who knows nowadays) but, for those who don't, they might be pleasantly surprised by the ingenuity of its creators.

Valtari is the sixth music album by the Icelandic (post-rock) band Sigur Rós.

Musically it's similar to most of the sound coming from the band (specially its frontman Jonsi) even being described by their bassist as a non-functional album (at least in its conception). When information about it started to come out early this year, people started worrying that the band (coming from a 3 year hiatus), was becoming tired creatively - a fear that was never confirmed.
Hmmm... waaaiiiittt.....

THINK: A film about making the world work better - IBM

Four distinct stories of progress show how a challenge once considered unsolvable was addressed: Sending a man to the moon, sequencing the rice genome, making medicine personal and reducing traffic congestion. Across the diversity of these examples, the film reveals how progress was made possible by a combination of people and technology, and by taking a distinct approach to making the world work better -- seeing, mapping, understanding, believing and acting. Today, this very approach can be used to tackle challenges large and small. This film was originally presented in an immersive experience on forty 85" screens in the IBM THINK Exhibit located at Lincoln Center in New York, NY from September 23 through October 23rd, 2011....
