Social Transformations and the Digital Age

http://wssf2013.org/

The role of digital technologies in nearly all aspects of life - most notably in the form of "social media" - has been a constant news focus in recent years, and it has also become a major focus of social research. As far as "social media" are concerned, popular and scholarly accounts about their participatory and transformative potential are usually enthusiastic. Twitter, Facebook, Wikipedia and Wikileaks are lauded for their capacity to harness people's creativity and knowledge, and for their potential to challenge traditional hierarchies in politics, science, and the media. It is claimed these web-based applications have facilitated political uprisings, the solution of scientific problems, and the emergence of hitherto undiscovered talents in music and the arts. Some more critical voices question the validity of such claims, pointing to the dangers of hoax, misinformation, dependency, narcissism, and the loss of privacy.

Yet digital technologies reach far beyond the current "social media" proliferation: in the form of computers and the networks enabling them to communicate with one another they have been in use for decades, and have affected nearly all areas of society, politics, and the economy. They have changed how people think about themselves, how work is organized, how knowledge is produced, and how access to information is regulated. Education, healthcare, shopping, agriculture, finance, security, leisure have all been deeply affected by information and communication technologies.

Perspectives on Interactive Documentary Storytelling

The interactive documentary space is a paradise for discovering the maturing of digital storytelling. Powered by the web, a host of disruptive new media technologies, and a desire to create meaningful and immersive experiences, the renaissance that’s emerged in documentary storytelling in the last several years created evergreen themes like Interactive, Participatory, Locative and Remix, to name just a few. Accordingly this results in the constant need to attach power words to define these works, like transmedia – one of the least understood and most misused of the terms we´re faced with today. For our purposes we´ll stick with ´interactive´.

Whatever the term, though, it is clear these are all evolving buzzwords, and success in this web storytelling domain is not formulaic. With projects that range the interactive spectrum, IDFA DocLab (better known as the new media program of theInternational Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam) represents the year´s best-practice examples of emerging modes of digital storytelling and new visual languages. It also serves as an idyllic time to take stock of just how far storytelling on the web has come in the last five years, and speculate about its future...

Signs, Systems and Complexity of Transmedia Storytelling

Signs, Systems and Complexity of Transmedia Storytelling | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

This article addresses key concepts such as sign, system and complexity in order to approach transmedia storytelling and better understand its intricate nature. The theoretical framework chosen to investigate transmedia storytelling meanders is Semiotics by Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914) and General Systems Theory by Mario Bunge (1919-). The complexity of transmedia storytelling is not simply the one of the signs of the works included in a transmedia franchise. It also includes the complexity of the dispositions of users/consumers/players as interpreters of semiotic elements (e.g. characters, themes, environments, events and outcomes) presented by transmedia products. It extends further to the complexity of social, cultural, economical and political constructs. The German transmedia narrative The Ultimate SuperHeroBlog by Stefan Gieren and Sofia’s Diary, a Portuguese multiplatform production by BeActive, are presented as examples of closed and open system transmedia storytelling respectively."

"The Future of Film" Emerging Industry Strategy from a Variety of Monetization Experts

"The Future of Film" Emerging Industry Strategy from a Variety of Monetization Experts | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

I had a chance to attend the "Future of Film Summit" in Beverly Hills produced by Variety and DigitalMediaWire.  The ambitious one-day event focused on "the current state of the industry, and how film and transmedia deals will be struck in the coming years."  That's a pretty grand scale, but I'd have to say it delivered a good mix of traditional film perspective mixed with a suprisingly high-level group of online experts.  The keynotes were given by Tom Bernard, Co-founder and Co-president, Sony Pictures Classics and by writer-director Kevin Smith (comments on the keynotes follow my conference takeaways below.)

A few takeaways from the conference:

Mike Vorhaus, President of Magid Advisors, a leading entertainment consulting firm, opened the conference with a fascinating collection of data about the general state of the film industry in terms of movie-going demographics.  The most interesting part for me was that avid digital "streamers" spend the most money at traditional theaters, purchasing movies and TV shows online, and renting the same online.  Hence, "Regular moviegoes not only are loyal to the cinema, they are also spending a lot of time with digital devices." (and spending money for content on these devices!) ....

How a Kinect hack is turning documentary film on its head (Wired UK)

How a Kinect hack is turning documentary film on its head (Wired UK) | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
James George and Jonathan Minard are creating a new type of documentary: one that films itself. The pair, based at Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania, began collaborating last October after George demonstrated a Kinect hack: he combined a Microsoft motion-sensor with an SLR camera to create a filming rig, then rendered the hybrid CGI and video images using the open-source editing suite RGDB Toolkit (which he also created). Minard had already been planning a documentary on software art: "There was something very compelling about seeing the human form presented as a real-time 3D scan," he says.
