Take Coca-Cola. Could the company use the Super Bowl to build a super relationship with consumers? Rather than a thousand more followers, could the company tap into thousands more consumers it can know by name, learn from, communicate with, and – gasp – sell product to?

Coca-Cola is sitting on an answer, even if the company doesn't realize it. Smart people inside of the storied brand launched the Coca-Cola Freestyle vending machine back in 2009. When I visit Five Guys Burgers and Fries more often than I should, the Freestyle machine lets me dispense a soft drink with one of a hundred flavor combinations, arrived at through a few quick choices. The machine became more than an efficient dispenser in 2011 when mobile agency T3 built a mobile gaming app for Coca-Cola called Freestyle PUSH! + Play. While today the app helps you find a Freestyle machine near you, when Coke figures out what it's sitting on, it will expand the app to let you pre-mix your soda on your phone, save your drink mix preferences and share them with friends. Ultimately the app will invite you to queue up your drink using your phone while you wait in line to order a burger with extra pickles...."

Love this Guy. Orphans vs. Empires: Andrew Slack [founder Harry Potter Alliance] at TEDxYouth@SanDiego

Andrew Slack shares how the universal story of the orphan versus the evil empire (think Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, Superman, Luke Skywalker and, of course, Harry Potter) has the power to be a game changer in the story of humanity and how we see ourselves as human beings. Slack's "novel" approach to activism inspires us all to join forces, to use our powers for good and to know that every wall has a secret door just waiting to be found. Fantasy is not an escape from our world -- but an invitation to go deeper into our world. Slack passionately reveals that banding together, reaching out and reveling in our interconnectedness makes us not orphans, but siblings -- who sleep together as a family of heroes under one sky -- where we are home.

Andrew Slack is the co-founder and executive director of the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA). HPA fights the dark arts in the real world by using parallels from Harry Potter to do good - such as sending cargo planes to Haiti, building libraries across the world, and advocating for human rights, media reform and equality on LGBTQ, immigration and class.,...

Why Instagram Feeds Finally Came To The Web

Why Instagram Feeds Finally Came To The Web | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
There are some advantages to isolationism. You can build and preserve culture. You don’t get entangled in world wars. And, maybe most of all: You become intriguing.

Today, Instagram finally moved users feeds--formerly only available on phones--to web browsers. We can now all explore and share Instagram freely online, with no limitations beyond that you can’t upload photos. No doubt, some will label the decision silly or pointless. But really, Instagram is just doing what all big deal superpowers do and joining the rest of the world...."

The Public Private at Parsons The New School for Design | Art & Education | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

The Sheila C. Johnson Design Center (SJDC) at Parsons The New School for Design presents The Public Private, the first major New York exhibition of contemporary art that explores the impact of social media and new technologies on the relationship between the public and private realm.

“Social media has radically redefined the boundaries between the public and the private,” said curator Christiane Paul, an associate professor in the School of Media Studies at The New School and the adjunct curator of New Media Arts at the Whitney Museum of American Art. “The messages, images, as well as likes and dislikes we share with friends and families are accessible to corporations and subject to commercial and social data mining. Our daily moves are open to various forms of tracking. What was once considered personal and private has become increasingly public in a cultural shift, entailing a reformulation of our identity.”

The artworks brought together in The Public Private—several presented for the first time in the United States—address these issues from psychological, legal, and economic perspectives and use strategies ranging from hacking to self-surveillance to reflect upon the profound changes in our understanding of identity, personal boundaries, and self-representation....

Fair Trade for Filmmakers: Is It Time For Festivals To Share Their Revenue?

Fair Trade for Filmmakers: Is It Time For Festivals To Share Their Revenue? | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Over the past 20 years or so, film festivals have beget more film festivals like rabbits on alkyl nitrates...

...Of all the chatter about how festivals can save independent film, why don't any of the festivals seers implement the most obvious solution? Pay the fucking filmmakers. Let's call it the 35% rule: 35% of earned revenues at film festivals should go directly back into the pockets of filmmakers. It's not an arbitrary number. Typically this is the percentage of gross box office revenues (though it's often higher) which are remitted to the rights holders in the theatrical market.

The contemporary international film festival circuit is, primarily, an exhibition circuit. Hoity-toity notions of curatorial independence and prestige rapidly break down when one analyzes the way films flow from the major festivals through the speciality and B-level fests down to the smallest of local events. For example, over 85% of the documentaries that premiered at Sundance 2012 went on to play five or more film festivals. Several played more than 20 festivals. That's exhibition, not curation....

Jeff Gomez, CEO & President at Starlight Runner - Industry Interview

Jeff Gomez, CEO & President at Starlight Runner - Industry Interview | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Ouroboros Entertainment Industry Interview with CEO Jeff Gomez of Starlight Runner...

3. How do you see brands approach to transmedia changing in the next couple of years?

Companies large and small are now realizing that they are no longer in control of their story. There is more discussion about any brand between consumers in social media than there is “official story” from the brand owner by an exponential factor. Look how tarnished the AT&T brand has been in the wake of the rise of the iPhone. The company perceived this as a glitch—after all, only a tiny percentage of their customers owned iPhones. But the discussion about dropped calls and shoddy service by those users infiltrated social media like ripples through a pond, ripples that washed up on the shore of big media. Suddenly AT&T is tarred and feathered. They were unprepared for that, because a century of traditional media made them believe they had control over the narrative. They didn’t. No one does any more. You can say the same thing happened to Mitt Romney, the NRA and the GOP.

So it used to be that the corporate narrative, the totality of a company’s Story World, was a pie that was mostly controlled by the corporation. Now it’s mostly controlled by people and their perception of that narrative. The corporation today only controls a sliver of that pie. It’s an amazing reversal....

Twitter's Vine Video App Enacts Age Restriction Amid Criticism for Porn | Digital - Advertising Age

Twitter's Vine Video App Enacts Age Restriction Amid Criticism for Porn | Digital - Advertising Age | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
twitter says you must be 17 years old to use its video app, vine, after criticism for porn on the service.

Vine, the social video application that rocketed up the App Store charts when it was first released two weeks ago, has enacted an age minimum for users. All new users and existing users who try to update to the latest version of the app, now must be 17 years old.

Or perhaps more accurately, they must identify themselves as 17 years old. When attempting to download the app for the first time or upgrade to the 1.0.5 version of the app, users are sent a push notification asking them to confirm they are 17 or older.

The new age restriction is presumably a reaction to criticism that users were uploading hardcore pornography to video-based social network. Previously, the app was rated for user 13 and older..."

What the kids are making now: Interview with 22 yr old Kaleb Lechowski on short film R'ha [Hollywood wants him] | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

See The Stunning, Student-Made Short That Got Hollywood’s Attention...

Every once in a while a wunderkind director comes along who, with heaps of talent and bootstrapping, creates something with visual effects that seem to be straight out of Hollywood....

Given the attention Lechowski attracted even before the film was released (he gained representation from Scott Glassgold and Raymond Brothers at IAM Entertainment based solely on the pre-release trailer) more from theR’ha world seems likely. Lechwoski is currently fleshing out a feature-length story to pitch to studios as a feature. As Glassgold says, “the plan is to use Kaleb’s model of low-cost (or in the case of the short, no-cost) special effects to create a sweeping low-budget science fiction universe.” It’s a plan that seems plausible given that Lechowski’s story world places animated creatures in the "good guy" role conventionally inhabited by costly human actors.

As Lechowski prepares to head to L.A. from Berlin, where he studied Digital Film Design at Mediadesign Hochschule, Co.Create asked him a few questions about the making of R’ha....
