The Economics of Lucy Smokeheart - Deus Ex Machinatio - Andrea Phillips on her Kickstarter Campaign

The Economics of Lucy Smokeheart - Deus Ex Machinatio - Andrea Phillips on her Kickstarter Campaign | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"They say that running a Kickstarter is a full-time job. That's a pretty big overstatement as far as I can tell, but running a Kickstarter does in fact take a big investment of time, and sometimes of money, as well. Since I'm all about transparency all up in here, I thought I'd lay out for you all the time and money I've plunked down just to get the Kickstarter for The Daring Adventures of Captain Lucy Smokeheart up -- and where the cash will go if and when it funds.

Anchors Aweigh

Before the Kickstarter even launched, I already had about $140 of skin in the game. That money went to the illustrator for her brilliant rendering of Lucy Smokeheart, registeringLucySmokeheart.com, and that beard for my promo video series, 30 Days of Piracy.

That's not including the time sunk into it, which was pretty significant. Here's a rough estimate:

14 hours - breaking story and some experimental writing and sketching
10 hours - writing Kickstarter copy and asking for feedback
6 hours - planning a promotion strategy, administrative tasks
8 hours - planning, recording and editing video ..."

"Things do not get easier," say show creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss. "We thought they would."

In 2006, when David Benioff and Dan Weiss, cocreators of the hit HBO series Game of Thrones, sat down with author George R.R. Martin to talk about adapting his epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire, Martin's Hollywood bullshit detector was on high alert. "He gave us a pop quiz," Weiss told one interviewer, but they passed the test because their passion for Martin's books "was real and natural and completely unforced."

Their geek-boy résumés probably didn't hurt: Benioff, a D&D dungeon master in his youth, did the screenplay for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Weiss had a video-game-themed novel under his belt. Nor did their willingness to shelve all other creative pursuits—no small sacrifice for Benioff, who had adapted his own first novel, The 25th Hour, into the Spike Lee film starring Edward Norton, and followed that up with the fabulous 2008 book City of Thieves...."

How Galahad’s multi-platform content engine could democratize transmedia storytelling. Oct. 2012 | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

LA-based entertainment studio The Shadow Gang (TSG) is launching a multi-platform content distribution engine titled Galahad, the company announced today. Aimed at transmedia storytellers, the platform will be officially introduced during the StoryWorld Conference + Expo, which is taking place in Hollywood until October 19.

In practical terms, Galahad lets content owners create full digital experiences which can be shared and monetized. As an example, The Shadow Gang created its own demo video, a film noir which you can findhere. While it is well produced, what makes it interesting is that it lets viewers choose their own adventure as in a gamebook.

As a matter of fact, Galahad’s immersive HTML5 video player helps users to create what TSG describes as “entire story worlds” – in other words, multi-platform transmedia stories with which viewers can engage. Here’s what the platform looks like for content owners.."

Girls Rising Documentary: Social Media Marketing Phenomenon

Girls Rising Documentary: Social Media Marketing Phenomenon | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
The producers of a new film about girls and education made Facebook and Twitter their publicists.

The producers of Girl Rising, a 100-minute film featuring nine stories of heroic girls from around the world, concluded that they would circumvent the traditional route of theater distribution and rely instead on social-media tools—Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn—to drive their message and build a community.Girl Rising has more than 245,000 fans on Facebook, and the film will open next week. About 500 screenings have been requested nationwide, with more than 32,000 tickets pre-reserved.

“In today’s world if you can get your message out early enough, you can find your super-fan,” says Holly Gordon, executive producer, explaining that the phrase “super-fan” is borrowed from Burger King, designated for people who visit six times a week. Theaters were booked through the site GATHR.us, where anyone can sign up and reserve a movie theater near them with the proviso they get a hundred friends to agree to come. “Sort of like having a party in someone else’s theater,” says Gordon..."

Installation Art: Who Cares? (English)

Director | Maarten Tromp | www.maartentromp.net Producer | Michiel Hogenboom | www.studiohunting.nl

The maintenance and conservation of contemporary visual art is a new challenge for museums and art conservators. More and more artists have taken leave of the painter's brushes and are moving on to new media, such as video. Or they are making installations of transient materials like polystyrene, wax and scotch tape. Can these works be saved for the art lovers of the future?

How to preserve and reinstall the work Notion Motion by Olafur Eliasson: 1.500 m2 of water, light and movement? What about works that are based on outdated technology? A large group of experts worked on the restoration of Exhange Fields, an interactive video-installation by Bill Seaman. Despite the fact that the work is only ten years old, it had to be completely restored and digitalized. And the artist Tino Sehgal doesn't allow any form of documentation of his works. Tate London acquired his performance This Is Propaganda in 2005. Will Tate be able to keep on showing this work to the public?

This film offers a glimpse behind the scenes of the European museum. It investigates three cases that shed an interesting light on the practices and issues that the conservator of modern and contemporary art deals with.…"

ExtremeTech » Brown University creates first wireless, implanted brain-computer interface

ExtremeTech » Brown University creates first wireless, implanted brain-computer interface | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"...One of the features that the Brown researchers seem most excited about is the device’s power consumption, which is just 100 milliwatts. For a device that might eventually find its way into humans, frugal power consumption is a key factor that will enable all-day, highly mobile usage. Amusingly, though, the research paper notes that the wireless charging does cause significant warming of the device, which was “mitigated by liquid cooling the area with chilled water during the recharge process and did not notably affect the animal’s comfort.” Another important factor is that the researchers were able to extract high-quality, “rich” neural signals from the wireless implant — a good indicator that it will also help human neuroscience, if and when the device is approved.

Moving forward, the wireless BCI is very much a part of BrainGate — the Brown University research group that’s tasked with bringing these neurological technologies to humans. So far, the pinnacle of BrainGate’s work is a robotic arm controlled by a tethered BCI, which paralyzed patients can use to feed themselves (video embedded below). While the wireless BCI isn’t approve for human use (and there’s no indication that they’re seeking approval yet), it was designed specifically so that it should be safe for human use..."

When It Comes To Content Strategy, It's Better To Think About Spreadability Than Stickiness. Interview with Sam Ford

When It Comes To Content Strategy, It's Better To Think About Spreadability Than Stickiness. Interview with Sam Ford | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

A few years back, a client came to my agency with a desire to show its "thought leadership" online. A key executive there was a credible source on healthy living, and the company wanted to find ways for him to share his expertise online...

The disconnect between my agency and our client stemmed from contrasting mindsets. The company operated via stickiness, while we were focused on spreadability--a distinction my co-authors and I examine in our new book, Spreadable Media. With stickiness, success is determined by how many individuals come to a centralized location via a uniform experience and how long they spend there. Sound familiar? It should. It's an attempt to recreate the "impressions" model of traditional media industries.

Meanwhile, spreadability focuses on how content moves through communities and exists at multiple points of contact, with an emphasis on a diversity of audience experiences. Publishers focused on spreadability seek to motivate sharing and encourage audiences to actively engage with content on their own terms...."
