Is social media the answer for Canada's indie filmmakers? | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
A digital entrepreneur is offering $1-million and a berth on Cineplex screens to anyone with a two-minute trailer and the smarts, energy and talent to garner lots of buzz. Robert Everett-Green reports on J.
siobhan-o-flynn's insight:

What's happened with this?? looking....

"Any three-person team with a two-minute trailer and $150 can sign up from now till Feb. 21 for a 17-week program that will run participants through a series of competitive “missions,” designed to build a following and refine film ideas. By the end of June, one team will emerge with up to $1-million in funding (from private sources and tax credits), six months to make a film, and a release in Cineplex Odeon theatres in January, 2014.“My whole disruptive model is based on getting filmmakers to focus on audiences first,” says Joly. “It’s not an afterthought to making the movie.”

CineCoup is an unusually audience-aware part of a small but vigorous movement toward what could be called dramatized or impatient filmmaking. Filmmaker Ingrid Veninger’s recent 1K Wave: $1,000 Feature Film Challenge was also about vaulting over the steep cash barriers that often deter or delay filmmakers. (The next 1K Wave will be announced later this month.) The 48 Hour Film Project, which challenges people to make a movie in that time, has iterations and imitators around the world, including Bloodshots, the festival of 48-hour horror shorts that screened at Vancouver’s Rio Theatre on Halloween. Joly’s twist on these speedy, rule-based ventures is to put up more money and get the marketing into the process from the beginning.

“If we can get Canadians to fall in love with Canadian filmmakers early,” he says, “we believe we can be the Oakland A’s to the New York Yankees of the big studios.”

Interview: Guillermo del Toro Talks 'Mama,' 'Pacific Rim,' 'Crimson Peak' & What Happened To His Disney Double Dare You Shingle | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

This weekend the new horror film  "Mama" opens in theaters nationwide. It's the spooky tale of a pair of young girls who are abandoned in a cabin in the woods for several years. When they are finally discovered and returned to society, to live with their kindly uncle (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from "Game Of Thrones") and his punkish girlfriend (Jessica Chastain), something else comes along with them… a spectral figure the girls name "Mama." In other words: perfect material for producer Guillermo del Toro to shepherd to the big screen....

What is it about ghosts that constantly fascinates you?

You know, amongst the characters in supernatural fiction, one of the ones I've been the most intrigued about is ghosts. I've done "Devil's Backbone," produced "The Orphanage," read every ghost story that you need to read for the curriculum, everybody that is noteworthy. And I think it's steeped in tradition. In England they used to tell great ghost stories during Christmas and I really find that it is, of the themes in horror, the one that invites themes of reflection. You reflect about what it is to be human, what it is to be alive, so on and so forth."

"After launching back in August, Backspaces, an iPhone app for telling stories using just photos and text, has passed 50,000 users and 90,000 stories. The service received a considerable boost during Instagram’s terms of service debacle, and has since taken on an interesting, reflective role in the mobile sharing space....

Sanders believes that narrative — which he calls “the arbitrary but meaningful context that people put onto data and events — is what makes all of our media human. Narrative isn’t something that works well automated (I’m looking at you Facebook timeline!), it needs people. So we built Backspaces for people to tell their stories.”

'Defiance' is the future of transmedia entertainment.
siobhan-o-flynn's insight:

Looking forward to seeing how this plays:

"...Murphy reveals that audiences will be introduced to eight species—including humans— that now inhabit the earth. In an interesting 21st century twist, Syfy is also offering viewers a chance to further explore the alien-filled planet in the Defiance videogame. Syfy President Mark Stern explains that with the show and the game, Defiance is the future of transmedia entertainment.

By playing the game and watching the show, fans will gather all the secrets of the world of Defiance. Stern was careful to explain that audiences do not need to use both mediums to enjoy Defiance. “It’s not choose your own adventure… You do not need to know anything about one to enjoy the other.” However, Murphy adds that of you follow both, fans will "get a richer, fuller, experience" and it will create “the illusion of spontaneity.”

According to Campbell, this is a massive constraint, as “new work is being developed in people’s spare time, which slows down progress and is highly frustrating. I often wonder what sort of work we’d be putting out there if we did have a proper budget and dedicated time, or if a publisher decided to take a real risk and commission us (we’ve been close to that point, several times, but it’s never happened).”

For Dan Franklin, digital editor at Random House, who spoke at last year’s awards, “now that the wider publishing industry has gone through a digital transformation, it is moving towards new media writers’ way of thinking.”

That’s becoming ever-more important as those brands and broadcasters are seeing their main audience become distracted by email, Twitter, Angry Birds, and all the other things that users do on their mobile phones instead of watching commercials. It’s all about keeping viewers engaged, even if that means keeping them engaged on some sort of branded mobile app.

Kwarter’s value prop is in providing a platform that partners can use to quickly roll up and integrate with their existing broadcasts or advertising campaigns. Initial rollouts have been focused on sports, with user polls and in-app games, as well as built-in messaging. Users can accrue points across different apps, and then can cash them in for real-world rewards.

Thinking Outside the Lens and Beyond Our Borders; A New Strategy for Film in Canada, Speech to Whistler Film Fest

Thinking Outside the Lens and Beyond Our Borders; A New Strategy for Film in Canada, Speech to Whistler Film Fest | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"...Fifth, digital has reinvented TV. Broadcasters are now owned by broadcast distributors that operate traditional cable and interactive networks. Their interest and ours in growing the VOD platform are increasingly aligned. Clearly we need to embrace new opportunities like on-demand from cable VOD to OTT services like Netflix. On-demand creates opportunities to make up for the collapse of the DVD market and reductions in the broadcast windows. VOD is a huge opportunity but it is unclear whether it can offset the declines we currently see.

The upside is, of course, that on-demand is very much central to consumer demand. But consumers want to see windows collapse so they don’t need to wait just because they choose the home screen over the theatre....

Sixth, making feature films transmedia needs to be more fully explored.  I note that although Canada is a signatory to 53 co-production treaties, none of those treaties covers digital content. Transmedia also needs to be explored as a way to increase audience participation in projects from development through to exhibition. Audience participation over interactive networks may be the most revolutionary way to increase promotion and awareness.

While the introduction of new windows like VOD and OTT are clearly opportunities to offset the loss of the conventional TV window they are unproven as economic engines for producers. The shelf space is there but the marketing and curation is not and without promotion revenues will be minimal.

And that leads us to my seventh and final point — the last link in our industrial chain, a link that has received very little attention, public policy and otherwise, over the years. We need to increase our focus on promotion and marketing all with a view to stimulating demand.  And, we need to also begin raising awareness of the overall value of Canadian content more generally with all Canadians...."

"Meanwhile, Canadian producers also receive a leg-up with generous subsidies for transmedia projects, whether from the Canada Media Fund, the National Film Board of Canada, industry funds and angel investors.

He added Canadian players like Cookie Jar Entertainment, Corus Entertainment and Rainmaker Entertainment are creating transmedia product for export worldwide.

Syfy Unveils Transmedia Series 'Defiance' at TCA, Part TV Show and Part MMO Video Game | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"...Executive producer and showrunner Kevin Murphy went into more detail about how "Defiance" would work, comparing it to reading Batman comics and/or Superman ones and the added layer of context that would bring to their shared Justice League adventures. "The Trion game has its own narrative. It has its own storylines. Our show has its own dramatic storytelling needs, its own storylines.

"But if you choose to partake of both, because we exist in a shared universe with dual portals or entrances, you get a richer, fuller, more nuanced experience because when some huge catastrophic weather event happens in the TV show, if you’ve been playing along in the game, something the player has done actually put those events into motion. And you have that extra additive experience."

"It’s all referential," added Syfy's president of content Mark Stern. "So if you know about both, it helps the experience and it adds to it. But you do not need to know anything about one to enjoy the other, which is one of the nice things about it. I think that’s and then having done that, there’s some great crossover opportunities."..."
