Galaman

This animation series is quite the exception in HK. It is one of the most notable, creative and well-maintained transmedia projects in town. Run by Minimind Studio, a young start-up that is currently part of the HK Design Centre incubation program, Galaman is a mix of superhero and game-style comic animations with a number of episodes online. Besides building a vast story universe with a number of characters, latest episodes divert from the main hero to entertaining side characters. Every episode holds underlying social and political criticism towards the HK society and sometimes reacts to recent trends as well..."

'The Book of Sarth’ app melds graphics and music to create a 21st-century concept album

'The Book of Sarth’ app melds graphics and music to create a 21st-century concept album | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Musical artists like Nouvelle Vague and Björk have already started using mobile and tablet apps as a way to promote or add value to their records, but a recent project calledThe Book of Sarth is using the app format to a slightly different end. A graphic novel and album mash-up, the app is an intriguing rethink of what album artwork can be in the digital age — and may even prove to be a platform for a new kind of narrative storytelling.

Zan Chandler's curator insight, January 4, 2013 4:17 PM

What I find so fascinating about some designers is that they don't ask what their clients need. They try to understand their clients' worlds/environments, hopes, and goals. They make use of multiple methods and techniques to discover what might not consciously emerge from their clients but might nonetheless be an unarticulated need.

Social Transformations and the Digital Age

http://wssf2013.org/

The role of digital technologies in nearly all aspects of life - most notably in the form of "social media" - has been a constant news focus in recent years, and it has also become a major focus of social research. As far as "social media" are concerned, popular and scholarly accounts about their participatory and transformative potential are usually enthusiastic. Twitter, Facebook, Wikipedia and Wikileaks are lauded for their capacity to harness people's creativity and knowledge, and for their potential to challenge traditional hierarchies in politics, science, and the media. It is claimed these web-based applications have facilitated political uprisings, the solution of scientific problems, and the emergence of hitherto undiscovered talents in music and the arts. Some more critical voices question the validity of such claims, pointing to the dangers of hoax, misinformation, dependency, narcissism, and the loss of privacy.

Yet digital technologies reach far beyond the current "social media" proliferation: in the form of computers and the networks enabling them to communicate with one another they have been in use for decades, and have affected nearly all areas of society, politics, and the economy. They have changed how people think about themselves, how work is organized, how knowledge is produced, and how access to information is regulated. Education, healthcare, shopping, agriculture, finance, security, leisure have all been deeply affected by information and communication technologies.

Yes, it’s already that transitional time when our current year ends and another begins, and today and tomorrow are quickly changing hands. Rather than look back at significant trends of the past 366 days (2012 was a leap year, remember?
siobhan-o-flynn's insight:

Most interesting idea here for me - though I wouldn't take it in the same direction:

"WE EMBRACE A NEW TYPE OF PATINA

Vice President of Creative and Software Innovation Paul Pugh, Austin

A key aspect missing from the mobile experience today is the concept of patina, or the wearing that comes with regular use. In the physical world, this might be the dog-eared pages of a favorite book or the small scratch on an LP that occurred at a rocking party. This slight degradation in quality is actually part of the story and part of our culture. The miniaturized and regenerated versions of our legacy are more often sanitized pointers. The next advance in mobile comes not from further miniaturization of our lives into a smaller package but rather the unpacking of those experiences into the environments around us. Mobile becomes a halo that surrounds us and travels with us wherever we go."
