The MOOC Phenomenon: Here to Stay?

The MOOC Phenomenon: Here to Stay? | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, March 21, 2013 11:10 AM

Are you interested in learning more about global sustainable energy? How about cryptology – or brain science? Or maybe you want to try a basic course on logic, and then mix it up a little with a class on ancient Greece?

Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have made it easier than ever to learn about a new subject, or augment the knowledge you already have on a slew of different ones. And because MOOCs are offered virtually, all it takes are an Internet connection, interest in the subject matter, and some spare time. Another appealing factor: grades aren’t emphasized, if they are given at all. But then, no course credit or certification is offered (yet) so grades are kind of a moot point. Still, popularity is steeply on the rise.

Simon Staffans: Turning piracy on its head | | MIPBlogMIPBlog | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"A couple of weeks ago David Petrarca, the freelance director that has worked on True Blood and HBO’s hugely successful fantasy epic Game of Thrones, answered a question at the Perth Writer’s Festival. It was a question of piracy – GoT having been the most pirated TV show on earth– and Petrarca seemingly shrugged it off, stating that ”the show thrives on cultural buzz”.

The next day Petrarca clarified that he was not condoning piracy in any way, shape or form. He acknowledged, however, that piracy meant that there was an interest in and a hunger for GoT content – in essence, a ”buzz”. Petrarca finished by stating that he hoped that technology would find a way to make the piracy issue redundant.

I personally do not condone piracy either, but at the same time I view it as something we will never get rid of. If Petrarca hopes for technological solutions, I look for creative ones. How can we turn piracy into buccaneering and making the pirates fight on our side? What kind of agreements can creators and producers strike with the downloading brigades that would turn today’s situation into a win-win for all parties involved? How can we, as TV industry people, create content that can be readily spread but at the same time generate sufficient revenue for everyone involved?..."

siobhan-o-flynn's insight:

Simon thanks for the post & for the lively discussion thread on Facebook. Here's what I'd like to throw in the mix. A key factor in piracy is the geoblocking of films/shows and as a Canadian I am often stuck waiting for content to be released here while watching the buzz in the US and UK over new shows & films. The wait can be months - incredibly frustrating. Finding a workable solution to a global audience that turns to piracy because of the staggered/delayed release of content to 'other' markets would be a huge plus.

Why Content Marketing is a Long Game (and How to Play It)

Why Content Marketing is a Long Game (and How to Play It) | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"The Copyblogger Media team returned from Austin last week, where (almost) all of us gathered for a company-wide meeting amidst the madness of SXSWi. We flew in for three days — from all corners of the US and Canada — to talk company values, where we’ve been, and where we’re going.

Our company works entirely remotely, so before this meeting, I hadn’t met most of my co-workers. During the course of those three days, I built relationships with our support team, I played poker (badly) with our developers, and I bonded with my editorial staff over eighties music and movies.

Our management team thinks long term. They know that the long-game value of getting all of us together to bond, plan, laugh, and dream far exceeds the cost of plane tickets, hotel rooms, catered meals, and private viewings of the late, great Patrick Swayze’s Road House (ask Tony Clark)....

www.wired.co.uk is a credible website for a magazine, so the information gained from this article can be considered accurate. There also seams to be little to no bias presented by wired magazine. I find it interesting that the allocation of €100 million worth of funding into France's robotics industry has been made to make up for the lack of competitivness France has played in the robotics industry so far and that there desire to keep up shows that they believe the future is indeed heading in the direction of robotics.

Charlotte Au's curator insight, March 26, 2014 8:17 AM

This diagram explains how PR has evolved through the adoption of social media. It shows that many old forms of marketing and media have become outdated and are been replaced by social media instead. This includes bloggers replacing reporters, twitter replacing news, YouTube replacing TVs and Pinterest replacing product shots. It also explains that social media allows authentic and credible information to be delivered speedily through social media networks which in turn assists businesses to form stronger relationships with their customers.

Although launching to the public only six weeks ago, AwesomenessTV is a project two years in the making which was galvanized by a $5 million grant through YouTube’s original content initiative. Founded by former Nickelodeon and WB producer/director Brian Robbins, the nascent video network has accumulated more than 12 million views and is approaching 90,000 subscribers in just a few weeks. Robbins is targeting a quarter million subscribers by year’s end and half million within 12 months — at that point it will equivalent in scale to many cable networks..."

World Premiere
Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival

(Toronto – March 19, 2013) With dramatic impact, Liz Marshall’s The Ghosts In Our Machine gently reveals a stark reality that is hidden from our view.

Through the heart and lens of acclaimed animal photographer Jo-Anne McArthur, this consciousness-raising documentary shines a cinematic light on the animals we don’t easily acknowledge – the “ghosts” are commodities within the machine of our modern world.

Over the course of a year, award-winning director Liz Marshall follows McArthur as she photographs several animal stories in parts of Canada, the U.S. and in Europe. Each story is a window into global animal industries: Food, Fashion, Entertainment and Research. All part of an epic photo project called We Animals (www.weanimals.org) now in its 15th year and shot all over the globe, McArthur has documented the lives of animals with heart-breaking empathic vividness and professionalism.

Gary Hayes's curator insight, March 20, 2013 8:50 PM

Apple’s application talks a lot about user annotation--in text and URLs. But let’s look at how Twitter and Facebook treat shared URLs today. They actually pull images from them in a seamless preview, saving users a click into a browser. Map that philosophy onto Apple’s proposal, and suddenly, you can place not just text but images and video in 3-D space across environments. Multimedia merges with the physical world, creating repercussions in communications and advertising that we can only begin to imagine.
